“Give yourself a gift of peace by playing the clarinet”
Moon Suk-hwan, Director of Moon Clarinet

According to a recent hobbies and interests survey, 24.9% of 786 office workers answered foreign language study as their desired hobby followed by exercise (22.8%) and learning musical instruments (21.0%). The first two seems not that surprising but the third one does. Reading this market demand, many music academies are rushing to open up courses to secure more music hobbyists. “Unlike other musical instruments which require you to take a considerable amount of time to learn, clarinet is relatively easy and can be played within a short period of time” says Moon Suk-hwan, Director of Moon Clarinet in Banpo-dong, Seocho District, Seoul. Moon majored in orchestral music at Hanyang University and continued the study at Aachen National School of Music in Germany. Back in Korea, he has devoted 12 years of his life to teaching students clarinet. He played with Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and New Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra but the wound he had on his finger in Germany made him give up his dream as a performer and instead he opened Moon Clarinet. “What makes the instrument charm is the sound it creates which is very similar to our voice. In fact, it is the nearest to human voice among any other wind instruments. The sound makes the listener feel calm and confortable. One day, parents with autistic child visited. It seemed impossible to teach the child clarinet at first. As time went by, however, he started to open his heart day by day and expressed his feeling. It was awesome. Now the child has set the target to study the instrument at university. It is truly amazing.” Moon values high of motivation, confidence and fun of the playing. Rather than giving pressure to the students with his opinions, Lee analyzes the character of each student and encourages them to conjure it up on the playing. “It is natural that normal people have fear for playing a musical instrument. But clarinet has relatively easy to play than other instruments and you cannot help but indulging yourself in the melodies once you started.” March this year, Moon opened a branch Hagye-dong, Nowon District, Seoul and he says that everybody is welcome to come and try.
