Crossing the borders of academic subjects
Shin Jung-sook, Professor of Chosun University Free Major Department
Steve Jobs who majored in humanities valued most highly of ‘human’ if we are to make products that can touch human. Humanities are a study on fundamental problems of human and their ideologies and culture. Shin Jung-sook, Professor of Chosun University Free Major Department says “Humanities are the most important study for students today and the foundation of all studies. They are the compass and they throw questions on meaning of our lives.” It is true that many people today agree the trendy chant ‘humanities are the foundation of the 4th Industrial Revolution’. And Shin back this up “No matter how intelligent we become or how developed out society, the value of our lives can only be questioned without humanities.” Sadly, many students are turning their back from humanities and many universities also are boasting their high employability after graduation to attract more students. The problem is everybody has different aptitude and talent and different view and dream. In this respect, introducing the Chosun University Free Major Department can only be meaningful. The first year students of the department go through the process of finding their aptitude and talent with the help of their professor before deciding their major among various fields such as literature, philosophy, education, history, physics, math and computer, etc. except the medicine and art related majors. Each professor takes care of 2~3 students to help find the right course for them. The ‘lifetime professor system’ and ‘all-in-one consulting system’ of the department especially are very effective in matching each ideal field to each student and professors record the details of the consulting for the use of future reference. The ‘Writing Center’ opened in 2016 also is drawing good results in a way to promote student’s understanding of human emotions and behavior; the center runs various programs such as writing skills, feedback and intensive writing so that students can develop their ability in delivering their opinions properly and creatively. “The key of university education in a way is at promoting opinionated and creative students on which they can spread their imaginations and make them into real” emphasizes Shin. Meanwhile, Shin makes herself busy writing ‘Asking A Way to the Modern Times – Literary Struggles of Kim Dong-in’ and ‘Korean Modern Art and Body’ which will be released soon by Haeok (publisher).
