지역사회 문화·예술 발전의 거점, 여미갤러리
문화와 예술이 지역사회 회복에 어떻게 기여할 것인가에 대한 문제는 현대 문화예술계의 가장 큰 화두 중 하나다. 더 이상 일부 소수계층들만이 향유하는 예술이 아닌, 지역공동체의 일원 모두가 보편적으로 공유할 수 있는 예술의 필요성이 제기되고 있기 때문이다. 달빛이 아름다운 마을, ‘달빛예촌’이라 불리는 충남 서산시 운산면 여미리 마을 입구에 자리한 ‘여미갤러리&카페(이하 여미갤러리)’는 바로 이처럼 마을 주민들의 문화활동과 교류의 공간, 삶의 향기가 묻어나는 예술 공간으로서 그 역할을 충실히 수행하고 있는 곳이다.
지난 2009년, 정부의 ‘신문화공간조성사업’에 선정되어 달빛예촌으로서의 면모를 갖춰나가기 여미리는 2012년 개관한 복합문화공간 여미갤러리를 통해 그 첫 번째 결실을 맺었다. 제 기능을 다한 채 10년 동안이나 마을 입구에 방치되어 있던 폐 정미소를 재건축해 꾸민 여미갤러리는 2012년 11월 개관기념 초대전을 시작으로 매년 유명 작가의 작품 초대전과 기획전, 프로젝트 전시 등을 개최하며 지역사회 문화예술보급과 도시·농촌 간 문화교류활동에 앞장서 왔다. 특히, 기존의 일반인들의 삶과 괴리되어 있던 예술의 틀을 깨고, 주민 누구나 부담 없이 방문해 카페에서 차를 마시며 담소를 즐기거나, 아름다운 그림을 감상하면서 생활 속에서 문화예술을 체험할 수 있는 ‘삶의 향기가 묻어나는 예술 공간’을 성공적으로 구현해냈다는 것이 여미갤러리의 특징이다. 여미갤러리의 조선희 관장은 “여미리는 작은 마을에 불과하지만, 발 닿는 곳마다 역사와 자연이 살아있는 아름다운 곳입니다. 서산의 중요한 문화유산인 ‘유기방 가옥(충남 민속 문화재 제23호)’이 보존되어 있고, 300년 수령의 소나무와 250년 수령의 느티나무가 계절마다 각기 다른 아름다움을 뽐내고 있습니다. 이에 2011년부터 여미리에 자리를 잡고 지내왔으며, 인연이 되어 지금까지 여미갤러리를 주민들의 행복한 예술공간으로 만들어나가는 데 힘쓰고 있습니다”라고 말했다.

여미갤러리가 수익성보다는 지역 문화예술의 요람을 목표로 하고 있다는 사실은 도심에서 멀리 떨어진 한적한 시골마을에 자리하고 있다는 점과 그간 개최해 온 전시의 성격에서도 잘 드러난다. 국내 중견 작가들의 주요 작품들을 초대해 선보인 것은 물론, 이완섭 서산시장을 포함한 서산시청공무원들의 작품전, 여미리 주민들의 사진을 모아 놓은 사진기획전, 강원대 문화예술대학 디자인학과 교수진과 대학원생들의 디자인작품전, 여미리 내 문화예술동아리 회원들의 작품을 전시한 달빛이야기전 등 지역사회 구성원 모두가 한데 모여 어우러질 수 있는 장을 마련하고자 힘써온 것이다. 더불어 마을중심부에 있던 폐가는 향토식문화공간인 여미디미방으로, 오랫동안 비어있던 축사는 주민들의 문화학습공간인 여미생활문화센터로 변모하며 달빛예촌 여미리의 향취를 더욱 북돋고 있다. 
이러한 활동이 실질적인 성과 즉, 지역사회의 건강한 재생으로 이어진 것도 주목할 만한 부분이다. 서산과 충남은 물론, 수도권과 각 주요도시에서도 주말이면 방문객이 줄을 이을 정도로 활기를 띄게 된 여미리는 한국관광공사에서 추천하는 ‘충남에서 가볼만한 곳’으로 수차례 지정된 바 있으며, 서산을 찾은 이들에게 빼놓을 수 없는 주요 방문코스로 손꼽히고 있기도 하다. 조 관장은 “여미갤러리가 탄생한 지도 어느덧 5년이 되었습니다. 처음에는 낯설어하고 무관심해 하던 주민분들도 이제는 마을의 자랑거리로 여기며 자긍심을 갖고 계시며, 보이지 않는 문화의식도 높아지면서 지역 공동체로서의 단결심도 고취되어 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.
이에 덧붙여 그는 “마을주민들과 함께 지역재생과 6차산업화를 위한 연구도 계속하고 있으며, 동아리 활동을 통한 결과물의 완성도가 높아지면 여미리만의 문화상품으로 발전시킬 계획도 가지고 있습니다. 따뜻한 차와 정감있는 이야기, 아름다운 예술이 함께하는 여미갤러리가 지역의 문화·예술 환경을 발전시킬 수 있는 문화 나눔의 공간이 되길 바랍니다”라고 포부를 밝혔다. 제2의 고향인 여미리에서 주민 모두와 함께 아름다운 교류를 이어나가고 싶다는 조선희 관장의 바람이 우리 모두의 가슴에 따스한 온기를 전해주길 기대한다.

Gallery & Design Book Café promotes local art and culture

It is one of the hottest subjects among the modern art and cultural world that how art and culture can contribute to recovering of local societies. This is because there are suggestions of the need of art with which majority of people can share rather than of limited groups of people. 

Yeomi-ri, Unsan-myeon, Seosan-si, Chungcheongnam-do is often called as ‘a moonlight art village’. At the entrance of the town resides Gallery & Design Book Café. In 2009, the café was designated as a new cultural space creation project’ by the government and has developed into the current cultural space in 2012. 

The refurbished café formerly was a disused rice mill for 10 years and the first invitational exhibition was held in July 2012. Since then, the café has held solo and group exhibitions on a regular basis with a good will to make contribution to activation of local culture and art. People say that the café provides a space where normal people can enjoy art and culture over a cup of tea and chat. 

Director Jo said “Yeomi-ri is a small but beautiful village where nature and history are well intact. There is Yusangmok House (South Chungcheon Province cultural asset No.22), a 300 year old pine tree and a 250 year old zelkova tree. And I’m working hard to make the café as an art and cultural space for local residents.”

A café where you are greeted with warmness, art and culture

Director Jo values art and culture more than money and has organized a number of exhibitions for renowned artists, Seosan City public servants, photographs of local residents, design works of design professors and students at Gangwon National University and local art and cultural clubs. Also, the deserted house in the center of the village turned to the café’s media space and the long time disused stable to a cultural center. 

As a result, the name of Gallery & Design Book Café spread widely and people from far and wide travel to, or drop by, the café on weekends and the café was designated as a recommended place number of times by the Korea Tourism Organization. 

“It’s been 5 years that the café is opened. Residents at first didn’t pay much interest but they now feel proud of it here in this small but beautiful village and it seems that there formed a firmer consolidation between them now than before.”

Jo added “I have a plan to promote the works exhibited in, or related to, the café as local specialty in the future. I hope that the café will keep contributing to development of local art and culture.”
