Securing an effective system and knowhow leads the Korean logistics industry for marine products
CEO Lee Jin-kyu of Treasure Island Marin Products (Bomoolsum Susan)

No.1 marine product distributor in Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province
Compared to other industries, the fishing industry in Korea seems to have stayed behind for a long time. If Pulmuone in the agricultural industry and Harim and Sunjin in the livestock industry have grown to be the renowned names today, there literally is not a single brand that can represent the fishing industry. For this reason, many industry specialists voiced together the need of promoting a fishing brand or two. As if to answer the demand, Treasure Island Marin Products is taking the center stage of attention with its status as the No.1 marine product distributor in Daejeon and South Chungcheong Province. But its scope of distribution reaches Busan, Incheon, Cheongju, Sejong and Cheonan over Daejeon and the CEO Lee’s ambition to reach Jeju in near future is actively being pushed forward. Lee said “Many things have happened that made the business staggered for the last 10 years. But our principle to distribute only the freshest marine products has never been neglected or changed. As a result, we have built a firm customer trust and it has always been the driving force of our business and success.”

Difference comes from hard work!
The Korean fishing industry seems to have not shown its will for a change or innovation yet. The agricultural counterpart has found the breakthrough with medical crops or the back-to-the-farm movement and the livestock with organic and premium meat. The fishing industry, on the other hand, tends to promote products of certain regions only and the consumers are also prejudiced that fresh sea food can only be found where it is caught. Yet Treasure Island Marin Products has succeeded in making a breakthrough. After discharged from the military service, CEO Lee went down to Daejeon in seeking of his future career and jumped into the marine product logistics by chance. He had accumulated the knowledge and knowhow necessary in the industry and opened a raw fish restaurant with his business partner at the age of 26. “I thought I could provide the freshest sea food to people, which I did, but I soon got bored about receiving sea food to sell at one place only. So I thought I was better off moving here and there to collect and distribute the goods and it all began there.” At first, it was hard for Lee to find his clients but his diligence and consistency finally was paid off. “A 1 ton truck (10 monthly installment remained) and 2 million won (USD$1,742) in my bank account were all I had when I started. But I trusted my diligence and quick sense of reading what is going on the market to secure sea food which I can only supply.” It is said that ‘distribution’ and ‘management’ are the two core elements to decide the quality of marine products. And Lee knew this very well and it played a crucial role to make Treasure Island Marine Products as successful as today.

Nothing but only the freshest and healthiest marine products!
What sets Treasure Island Marine Products apart from its rivals is at its vast information and effective logistics system covering from purchase to management of temperature, salinity and aquarium during the delivery. The system keeps the fish in the aquarium as fresh and healthy as possible until they reach their destination. Also, Lee constantly upgrades equipment and facilities to the up-to-date level while pays attention to welfare of employees in terms of salary, severance pay, overtime rate and annual leave to maintain the excellent customer services. If you want to check how fresh the products of Treasure Island Marine Product are, you are highly advised to pay a visit to Bomoolsum Heo Susan(Bomoolsum sushi bar), already famous as one of the hottest raw fish restaurants in Doma-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon. It is not only famous for the fresh taste but also for the supersize aquarium in the corner of the building. It is said that people drop by to tour the restaurant and another story goes that a group of children from a kindergarten visited one day with educational purpose on studying about fish. “I ran the restaurant as a staff cafeteria at first but its excellent taste spread from mouth to mouth and it eventually turned to a current commercial restaurant like you see today. I think that people have a trust in the freshness of our products as I myself am the supplier of the sea food and that’s why they travel from far to have the freshest taste here.” When asked about future plan, CEO Lee said that he was ambitious to open a sea food department store where people could buy all kinds of sea food. “You can be bigger if you work really hard for anything and everything” is the slogan of Treasure Island Marine Products. “As the Korea’s fishing industry has been stand still for a long time, there will be more rooms for development. It actually is hard job but the reward is great as long as you make yourself diligent.” Lee also pointed out the need of the government’s practical mid and long term support for overall and well balanced development of the industry. CEO Lee and his staff will wake up early in the morning tomorrow again, as they always do, to supply the freshest marine products to sea food restaurants and it is worth observing how they make progress.
