일산 백석동의 조용한 골목으로 들어서면 싱그러운 꽃 향기와 함께 차 한 잔의 여유를 즐길 수 있는 공간이 우리를 맞이한다. 바로 플라워공방 겸 힐링카페 ‘더수아플라워’다. 이곳은 맛있는 음료를 마시며 다양한 꽃들을 감상할 수도 있고, 자신만의 꽃바구니를 만들어 볼 수도 있어 연인들의 데이트코스이자 직장인들의 힐링 공간으로 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 질 좋은 원두를 사용해 깊고 부드러운 향미가 가득한 아메리카노와 상큼한 활력을 전하는 수제청이 마련되어 있으며, 딸기와 커피가 어우러진 스트로베리 브라운과 제주도에서 직접 공수한 말차를 사용해 깔끔한 맛이 특징인 말차라떼는 그 가운데서도 최고의 인기 메뉴라고 한다. 조수아 대표는 “13년째 공방을 운영하는 동안 생각보다 많은 분들이 꽃을 어려워하고, 쉽게 다가오지 못한다는 것에 안타까움을 느꼈어요. 생활 속에서 꽃을 가까이하는 것이 더없이 풍족한 행복과 힐링을 선사함에도, 대다수의 사람들은 꽃을 사치품으로 여기거나, 기념일에만 사는 것으로 치부하고 있는 상황이었죠. 더 많은 분들이 꽃을 가깝게 접할 수 있으면 좋겠다는 생각에 플라워공방과 카페를 함께 배치하는 아이디어를 떠올리게 됐습니다”라고 설명했다. 이에 그는 오픈이벤트, 꽃다발이벤트, 커플이벤트 등 다양한 이벤트를 진행하며 고객과의 소통에 힘쓰고 있으며, 모두의 삶 속에 언제나 꽃이 자리하는 문화를 확산시키고자 노력하고 있다.

맛있는 음료도 더수아플라워를 유명하게 만든 요인이긴 하지만, 무엇보다 조수아 대표가 주력하고 있는 부분은 플라워샵이자 공방으로서의 역할이다. 매장 곳곳을 수놓고 있는 크고 작은 꽃다발들과 꽃바구니들은 조 대표가 심혈을 기울여 작업한 결과물들로 아내나 여자친구, 부모님께 꽃을 선물하려 찾아온 이들에게 인기가 높으며, 선물 받는 사람의 취향, 연령대에 맞춘 주문제작도 가능해 멀리서도 꽃 선물을 구입하고자 찾아오는 방문객이 많다고 한다. 
플로리스트로서 조 대표의 오랜 노하우와 탁월한 감각은 공방 운영에서도 빛을 발한다. 더수아플라워는 현재 취미반과 원데이클래스, 창업을 위한 전문과정, 프리저브드 플라워 등의 수업을 진행하고 있으며, 캔들과 비누 제작 클래스도 함께 진행하고 있다. 조 대표는 “현재 수강생들 중 대부분이 직장인 분들이세요. 아무래도 사회생활에서의 스트레스를 꽃을 통해 해소할 수 있기 때문인 것 같아요. 그래서 저희도 수강생 분들이 보다 여유롭고 편하게 수업을 듣고 가실 수 있게 하고픈 마음에 다른 곳들보다는 수업시간을 길게 운영하고 있어요”라고 밝혔다. 그 때문인지 수강생들의 수업에 대한 만족도는 더없이 높은 상황이다. 실제로 재수강을 이어가는 이들이 많으며, 취미로 시작해 전업을 꿈꾸게 된 수강생도 있다고 한다. 이에 대해 조 대표는 “전업으로의 전환은 쉽게 결정해서는 안 된다”고 강조했다. 그는 “저 또한 취미로 수업을 듣다가 플로리스트로 전업하게 된 케이스에요. 하지만 그 과정에서 남들보다 수없이 많은 시간을 노력해야 했고, 잠 잘 시간까지 줄여가며 매일 연습과 공부를 반복해야 했어요”라며, 상당한 각오가 반드시 필요하다고 당부했다. 하지만 한편으로 그는 창업을 결심한 이들에게 자신이 알고 있는 정보와 경험들을 최대한 공유하고자 노력하고 있기도 하다. 진정으로 꽃을 사랑하고, 이를 함께할 수 있는 이들이 늘어난다면 올바른 꽃 문화를 더욱 널리 확산시킬 수 있으리란 기대에서다. 이에 조 대표는 지인들과 함께 보다 자유롭고 의견을 개진하고, 협력할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 단체를 만들고자 하는 계획도 가지고 있다고 한다. 
조 대표는 “최근 프리저브드 플라워에 대한 관심이 높아지면서, 이를 배우려는 분들과 전문가로서 활동하고자 하는 분들이 늘어나고 있어요. 하지만 엄밀한 의미에서 프리저브드는 오랜 시간의 노력과 기술을 요하는 ‘공예’라는 게 제 생각이에요”라고 지적했다. 프리저브드가 한때의 유행이 아니라, 화훼시장과 공예시장의 지속 성장을 이끄는 원동력이 되기 위해선 보다 차근차근 단계를 밟아나가는 신중함이 필요하다는 것이 그의 생각이다. 이에 조 대표는 일본을 통해 유입되는 새로운 제품과 기술들을 연구·보급하고자 힘쓰고 있으며, 이를 활용한 새로운 강좌도 구상하고 있다고 전했다. 
최근의 꽃 시장은 확실히 예전보다는 위축된 상태다. 이른바 ‘김영란법’이라 불리는 청탁금지법이 시행된 이래 지난 1년여 간의 변화다. 조 대표는 잔뜩 움츠러든 심리 속에 ‘어버이날’이나 ‘스승의날’의 의미마저 퇴색되고 있다고 지적하며, ‘특별함’이 아닌 ‘일상’이 되는 꽃 문화, 가까운 곳에서 손쉽게 즐기는 건강한 꽃 문화를 지역사회에 전파하는 데에 더수아플라워가 길잡이 역할을 다하길 바란다고 밝혔다. 누구나 가벼운 마음으로 찾아와 꽃과 차 한 잔을 즐기는 휴식 가득한 도심 속 비밀의 화원, ‘더수아플라워’가 앞으로 대한민국 꽃 문화에 어떤 변화를 이끌어가게 될지 주목해보자.

Jo said “I’ve run the flower workshop for 13 years. I found that the learners thought the craft difficult and people also regarded flowers as things of occasion. So I brought up the idea of a flower café and workshop in a way to promote flower art to be part of daily life of the people.” Also, Jo regularly arranges events such as open event, flower bunch event or couple event in order to promote communication with customers.

Entering the café, you can find beautiful flower works laying or hanging here and there. All of them are made by Jo herself. They are very popular especially among lovebirds or people who buy for their parents as a gift. If you want a special flower bunch or basket, you can also place an order according to your preference. Jo’s talent and years of knowhow have already been recognized by many and they are shining even better when it comes to running the workshop with customized courses designed for people learning as hobby, one off, startup or the recent trend ‘preserved flower art’. In addition, Jo offers a candle and soap course to give a variety. “Most students are office workers. I guess they learn flower art as a channel to get rid of their stress accumulated at work place. So I extended the length of each class so that they can stay longer with ease and comfort without being chased by time.” As a result, the overall satisfaction rate of the students is very high and many of them are continuing the class even after finishing a course. “You should be careful if you plan to change your career as a florist. In fact, I myself am a hobby-turned florist but I had to work really hard day and night almost on a daily basis. So you must be determined to pay the effort.” Yet, Jo gives her unsparing support for those who decided their mind to be a florist by providing necessary startup information alongside the classes. This is also coincided with her will to spread flower art to more people. “Preserved flower art seems to be taking the center stage of the flower art market recently and increasing number of people wish to learn the art. To be honest, the preserved requires a greater effort and a high level of technique as a ‘craft’.” In this respect, Jo thinks that a step by step process is needed if the preserved is to contribute to overall development of the flower and flower art industry. For this, Jo is trying to introduce new products and technique from Japan and planning to bring up a new course. It is true that Anti-bribery and Graft Act (Kim Young-ran Act) is affecting the flower market rather discouragingly but Jo’s innovative ideas and programs are playing a role model and demonstrating how we can break through the market situation.
