최근 잇따라 불거진 살충제 계란, 유해물질 생리대 파문은 우리가 일상생활에서 사용하는 모든 물품에 대한 불안감으로까지 확산되며 ‘생필품 포비아’ 현상을 야기하고 있다. 각종 언론에서는 연일 소시지, 햄버거 등의 먹거리와 휴대폰 케이스와 같은 생활용품의 위해성을 폭로하고 있다. 그러나 많은 이들이 간과하고 있는 분야가 바로 ‘화장품’이다. ‘피부를 아름답게 가꿔준다’는 허울에 가려진 화장품의 진실을 자연주의 천연화장품 대표기업 스킨쎌의 강성길 대표에게 들어보았다. 

피부는 흡수하는 기관이 아니라 배출하는 기관
우리나라에서 화장품 성분과 관련된 논란이 일었던 것은 약 4~5년 전, 합성방부제와 계면활성제, 색소 등이 알레르기나 피부트러블을 유발할 뿐 아니라 발암물질을 포함하고 있다는 이야기가 확산되면서였다. 하지만 이후 대다수 화장품 기업들은 저마다 ‘건강한 성분’을 내세우며 불안감에 휩싸인 소비자들을 공략하기 시작했고, 2017년 현재 사람들의 머릿속에 이러한 우려는 씻은 듯 사라진지 오래다. 그러나 스킨쎌의 강성길 대표는 여전히 우리 주변엔 건강을 위협하는 화장품들이 상당수를 차지하고 있다고 지적했다. 강 대표는 “사람들은 아름다운 피부 가꾸기 위해 수많은 화장품을 사용하고 있습니다. 하지만 이것이 진정으로 피부를 위한 일인가를 고민하는 사람은 그리 많지 않습니다. 건강한 피부를 만드는 핵심은 영양의 공급이 아니라 피부 본연의 세포생체리듬을 정상화시키는 일입니다”라고 강조했다. 많은 사람들이 막연히 좋은 성분을 피부에 침투시키면 피부건강이 향상되리라 착각하고 있지만, 이는 그 과정에서 어떠한 작용이 발생하는 지를 잘 모르기 때문이라는 것이 강 대표의 생각이다.
그의 설명에 따르면 우리들의 피부는 얇은 보호막으로 덮여있다. 인체 내에서 생성되어 모공의 배출리듬에 의해 조성되는 이 보호막은 외부의 물질이 피부 세포를 오염시키거나 내부 혈관으로 유입되는 것을 막아주는 역할을 수행한다. 때문에 일반적인 화장품에는 주요성분이 피부 안으로 손쉽게 침투될 수 있도록 이 보호막을 제거하는 성분을 포함하고 있다. 문제는 이 과정에서 자연스럽게 유지되던 피부의 유수분 밸런스가 무너지고, 유해한 화학물질이 함께 인체 내부로 유입된다는 점이다. 이른바 ‘경피독’이라고도 불리는 이것은 이미 유럽이나 미국, 일본 등에서는 의사와 약사들이 주축이 되어 유해성을 경고하고 있지만, 우리나라에서는 이에 대한 관심이 극히 미흡한 상황이다. 강 대표는 “경피독은 피부에 트러블을 발생시킬 뿐 아니라, 혈관을 타고 흘러 들어가 뇌, 유방, 자궁 등에 축적되어 각종 질환을 유발하는 원인이 되기도 합니다”라고 설명했다.
이에 그가 강조하는 것이 바로 「피부는 흡수하는 기관이 아니라 배출하는 기관」이라는 피부과학의 원리다. 각종 노폐물의 배출구이자 내부 장기를 보호하기 위한 생체장벽인 ‘피부’를 보다 투명하고 탄력 있게 유지하기 위해선 혈액 속의 영양원을 피부 세포로 잘 전달되게 하는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다는 생각이다. 그리고 그러한 생각에서 탄생한 것이 바로 자연주의 휴머니즘 화장품 브랜드 ‘스킨쎌(Skincell Lab)’이다.

Skin is tissue to release but not to absorb

4 to 5 years ago, Korean people were shocked by the news that some of cosmetics contained synthetic preservatives, surface active agent and pigments that could cause allergy and troubles or even a cancer. Taking things seriously, cosmetics firms put up a catch phrase ‘healthy ingredients’ to appease consumers and actually succeeded making sure of the safety of ingredients as of 2017 through hard work. 

However, CEO Kang Seongkil of SKINCELL worries that there still are some cosmetics that might contain harmful substances. “People use cosmetics to make their skin look nice. But not many people seem to think whether the cosmetics they use actually are good for the skin. What makes the skin healthy in fact is at normalizing the cell biorhythms rather than supplying nutrition.”

People tend to think the good ingredients on the skin will improve its health but do not know what reactions might occur during the absorbing procedure. According to Kang, skin is covered with protective film made by the releasing rhythm of pores. It prevents skin cell pollutants from coming into blood vessels. Generally speaking, normal cosmetics contain substances that remove this protective film so that the main ingredients can effectively get into the skin but it can destroy the balance of hydration and nourishment of the skin and let into the body the harmful substances. These are called ‘gyeongpidok’ and doctors and pharmacists in Europe, Japan and the US already have warned the harmfulness of the substances. But in Korea, public awareness on the issues is still weak.  

“Gyeongpidok can cause skin trouble or be accumulated in brain, breasts and womb to cause various diseases.” Kang adds “Skin is tissue to release but not to absorb” and this is the principle of skin science. It is most important to let the nutrition in blood smoothly flow into the skin cells. And this way the skin can be elastic and healthy. Kang gathered these ideas and put them into his natural and humanism cosmetic brand ‘Skincell Lab’.

No oil, no chemicals but only 100% natural ingredients

Skincell supports natural power of the skin to become healthy and beautiful. Skincell recovers physiological function and regenerative power and gives a condition for the skin to maintain its health without depending on cosmetics.
