지난 7월 30일, 강원도 원주시 태장동에서 의미 있는 행사가 열렸다. 바로 대한민국 곤충산업에 새로운 기준을 제시할 친환경 곤충전문기업, ‘벅스바이오(Bugsbio)’의 개업식이 열린 것이다. 개그맨 조윤호의 사회와 트로트 가수 서인아의 축하무대, 그리고 50여 명의 가맹점주 및 가족, 벅스바이오의 설립을 관심 있게 지켜봐오던 이들이 함께 자리한 가운데 벅스바이오는 ‘3.5g의 기적’을 향한 느리지만 힘 있는 첫 걸음을 내딛었다.

‘벅스바이오 그룹(Bugsbio Group)’은 미래의 식량이라 불리는 곤충산업의 선진화·고도화를 위해 설립된 친환경 곤충전문기업이다. 벅스바이오의 모체가 된 ‘벅스마루’는 지난 2015년 설립된 이래 친환경 약용굼벵이 전문생산기업으로서 확고한 입지를 구축해 왔으며, 앞으로도 굼벵이 생산과 판매, 사육, 분양사업을 수행할 계획이다. ‘벅스테크’는 굼벵이 사육환경의 현대화를 위해 설립된 업체로 각 성장단계에 맞는 최적의 온도와 습도 유지를 위한 사육설비, 아로니아 발효톱밥의 생산 및 공급, 제품 생산을 위해 필요한 각종 시스템을 전문적으로 취급하게 되며, ‘네츄럴비’는 굼벵이농가의 수익증대를 위한 제품 기획과 판매, 브랜딩 및 마케팅, 신규 판로 개척 등의 역할을 수행하며 차별화된 서비스를 제공해 나갈 예정이다. 그리고 ‘벅스바이오’는 이러한 모든 산업을 총괄하는 컨트롤타워로서 대한민국 굼벵이 산업의 도약을 진두지휘할 계획이다.
약용굼벵이 산업에 첫 발을 내딛은 순간부터 벅스바이오 그룹의 설립에 이르기까지는 수많은 이들의 땀과 열정, 더 나은 미래를 위한 헌신과 노력이 있었다. ‘꽃벵이’라고도 불리는 흰점박이꽃무지 유충의 생산성을 극대화하고자 각기 다른 사육환경과 조건을 테스트하며 수천 번 이상의 시행착오를 거쳐야 했으며, 그러한 과정에서 굼벵이들이 집단 폐사하는 아픔을 겪기도 했다. 또한, 제품화를 위한 과정에서도 기존에는 시도되지 않았던 다양한 아이디어와 기술에 도전해왔으며, 눈앞의 작은 이익보다는 먼 미래의 높은 성장을 꿈꾸며 힘겨운 시간들을 감내해 왔던 것이다. 
벅스마루의 신아영 대표는 “사람들은 흔히 답답하고 느릿느릿하게 행동하는 것을 일컬어 ‘굼벵이 같다’라고 말합니다. 하지만 실제로 굼벵이가 움직이는 모습을 보면 절대 느리다고 생각되지 않습니다. 오히려 자신의 삶을 위해, 훗날 번데기를 벗어내고 날아오를 때를 위해 한시도 쉬지 않고 바쁘게 움직이고 있죠. 저희 벅스바이오의 모습이 바로 그러한 것이라 생각합니다. 마치 굼벵이처럼 당장의 이익보다는 미래의 꿈을 위해 부단히 노력하고 전진해 왔기에 허물을 벗고 날아오를 준비를 마칠 수 있었다고 생각합니다”라고 말했다.

모두에게 혜택이 돌아가는 공정한 산업구조를 만들어나갈 터
벅스바이오의 등장은 그간 새로운 성장가능성을 모색해오던 국내 농업 분야에 성공을 향한 바람직한 이정표가 되리라 기대되고 있다. 특히, 1차 산업의 생산업, 2차 산업의 제조·가공업, 3차 산업의 서비스업을 복합한 ‘6차 산업’의 훌륭한 롤 모델이 될 것이라는 게 전문가들의 의견이다. 신아영 대표는 “그간 국내 대다수의 농가들은 갈수록 악화되는 수익성과 열악한 작업환경 속에서 많은 어려움을 겪어왔습니다. 이에 저희 벅스바이오에서는 새로운 고부가가치를 창출할 수 있는 방법으로서 ‘곤충산업’을 제시하고 있으며, 이를 통해 어려운 농업 현실에 신선한 활력을 불어넣을 수 있으리라 전망하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. 약용굼벵이의 생산에서 제품화, 판매에 이르기까지 체계적이고 일원화된 시스템이 구축되어 있기에 성공을 확신할 수 있다는 것이 벅스바이오가 가진 비전이다. 
벅스바이오가 추구하는 또 한 가지 목표는 불공정한 국내 곤충산업 시스템을 개혁하는 것이다. 그 첫 번째가 바로 ‘발효톱밥’이다. 발효톱밥은 굼벵이의 성장속도와 품질에 결정적인 역할을 하는 매우 중요한 요소다. 굼벵이농장에서는 흔히 참나무 톱밥이나 버섯배지를 사용하고 있는데, 참나무 톱밥은 나무 목질이 딱딱해 발효에 상당한 시간과 노력을 필요로 할 뿐 아니라 가격이 비싸 수익성이 악화된다는 문제를 갖고 있으며, 버섯배지는 가격은 저렴하지만 잡벌레, 응애, 톱밥파리 등이 쉽게 발생해 해충 피해를 입을 수 있다는 단점이 있다. 이에 대다수의 농장들이 전문 업체를 통해 발효톱밥을 구입해 사용하고 있으나, 가격거품이 심할뿐더러 발효도 채 다되지 않은 톱밥을 판매하는 경우가 많아 굼벵이 폐사의 피해를 입는 사례가 증가하고 있는 상황이다. 
벅스바이오의 탄생은 이처럼 그릇된 질서와 불공정한 행위들을 곤충산업 전반에서 몰아내고, 보다 공정하고 올바른 표준을 확립하겠다는 신념에서 비롯됐다. 농가에게는 부담 없는 가격에 양질의 톱밥을 제공함으로써 사육원가 절감에 일조하며, 소비자들에게는 건강한 환경에서 생산된 약용굼벵이의 효능을 전달하겠다는 것이 이들의 목표다. 또한, 함께하는 가맹점에게 실제 혜택이 돌아가는 시스템, 함께하는 모든 이들과 성공을 나눌 수 있는 기업문화를 산업 전반에 뿌리내리는 것이 이들의 바람이다.

Bugsbio leads advancement of edible cicada lava

Edible insects are recognized as a promising future food by many people today. Established in 2015 as an edible insect company with a goal to lead the advancement of the industry, Bugsbio Group is planning to produce and sell cicada lavas as well as parceling out business. 

Bugs Tech was established to modernize the cicada lava cultivation environment and it will realize optimum temperature and moisture according to each growth level and will secure effective systems of fermented sawdust production and supply. Natural B, on the other hand, takes the role to provide planning and marketing as well as pioneering new markets. Bugsbio, to sum up, is the control tower of these two bodies to grow the business as a promising future industry in Korea.

There have been much passion, sweat and devotion to make Bugsbio Group as it is today. The pioneers had to go through thousands of trials and errors and a mass of cicada lavas once were all died. Not despondent, the team kept challenging for new ideas and technologies and set up its long term vision over immediate profits.

“People say to someone who does things slowly ‘you are like cicada lava’. But they have to take back what they said if they see how cicada lava moves. Cicada lavas make themselves busy all the time to fly high one day. And it is exactly the image of what we think Bugsbio should work and grow into. Like cicada lavas, we work with consistency over fast profits and this has made us what we are today” says CEO Shin Ah-young of Bugs Maru.

Working for all, sharing for all

The growth of Bugsbio is expected by many to be a milestone for the direction of the Korean agricultural industry. Experts predict that Bugsbio will grow as a role model of the 6th industry in which the elements of the first, second and the third industries are combined. 

“A lot of farm houses are suffering from decreasing profits and poor working environments. Bugsbio is suggesting ‘edible insects’ as a new high value added business and we are expecting that it will revitalize the stagnated industry.”

Bugsbio has built a system that can carry out one stop processing from production to selling and this is one of the biggest advantages of the company to bring a success to the business. Also, Bugsbio has a sense of duty to bring a sound distribution system. ‘Fermented sawdust, for example, affects the quality and growth rate of cicada lavas. Farmers normally use oak tree sawdust or mushroom badge but the former requires a considerable time and effort to be fermented and it is also expensive while the latter is cheap but invites flies. As a result, most farmers have to buy fermented sawdust but it often is overpriced and not fermented which sometimes can kill all cicada lavas. For this, Bugsbio is offering quality sawdust at reasonable prices and has a goal to deliver the effect of medicinal cicada lavas that are grown in a healthy environment. Also, Bugsbio is putting into practice of its win-win management so that the head office and the partners can grow together. 

Edible insect industry is not only growing as a promising future industry in Korea but in the world at the moment. Yet the Korea is still in its beginning stage when comparing to the global market. The good news, however, is that an innovative company like Bugsbio Group is pushing forward its ambition to lead the industry in Korea and in the world.
