President Sohn Byeong-woong of Pohang Forestry Cooperative
“Second leap forward for the future of the forest industry”

Suggesting advanced forest management system
Pohang is a sole city that has ‘Serpentine Memorial Park’ opened in 2007 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Korean Serpentine. 67% of the land of the city is green areas surrounded by mountains and part of thanks for this excellent maintenance goes to the Pohang Forestry Cooperative established in 1962.

The cooperative promotes sustainable forest management systems and the benefits of about 5,200 members as well as balanced development of the city. June last year, the cooperative built a wood processing factory to be used as a foundation for making the most of the wood resources in the region.

Inaugurated as the 19th president of the cooperative in November 2015, Sohn Byeong-woong said “Forests are called as future life resource. Forest products such as wood pulp and timbers make our lives more convenient. There are many kinds of organisms living in forests and forests also function as tools to purify environment and to provide people fresh resting places.”

To maximize all of these benefits, Sohn and the boarding members of the cooperative organize various training, manpower development and work efficiency courses while actively promoting 6th industrialization of forest products and distribution alongside stabilization of financial funding and long term profits.

“Some of our core projects are activation of proxy management, promoting new product for wood distribution centers and public participation in forest industry projects. We also run customized courses and provide services relating to forest management, issuing licenses for development of forests and felling.”

Development and vitalization through creativity and innovation
Sohn’s executive ability and rich experience and professional knowledge are creating a synergy effect in turning forest resources into profitable businesses for members, mountain owners and forestry workers.

Sohn is combing his ideas with cutting edge technologies to answer the demand of each industry while linking the businesses to related organizations in a way to improve profit structure, welfare of members and diversification of projects. In recognition of these efforts, Sohn received the Great Prize for Proud Koreans Who Brought Honor to 2016 Korea.

It is also a result of these efforts to open the Federation for Pohang Forestry Workers on 30 June. Sohn said “The income of forestry workers are relatively poor compared to workers in other industries. There is no financial or administrative support but forestry workers contributed to development of the industry with a sense of responsibility and duty. Therefore, it is urgent to bring effective regulations alongside the support.”

The federation suggests direct payment to workers, development rights dealing system, forest disaster insurance, forestry bank, support system, startup support and investment systems, private investment protection system, and measure for improving industry competitiveness.

“I feel a great sense of responsibility in carrying out my role and duty as the president of the cooperative and the chairman of the federation. I’m well aware of this and determined to do my best to speak for the members and also for the national economic growth as whole. And I kindly ask members and related officials of organizations to give support.”

<Power Korea> sends a message of support.
