현대인들에게 전하는 ‘꿈’의 메시지
지난 6월 7일부터 30일까지 대구지방경찰청 내 무학갤러리에서 민경옥 작가의 초대전이 열렸다. 이번 전시에서 「ing-dream」이라는 제목의 연작 작품을 선보인 민경옥 화백은 “꿈이란 우리가 죽는 날까지 끊임없이 이어져야 하는 것입니다. 제 작품을 통해 많은 관객들이 갇혀있던 내면의 자유를 느끼고, 그 안에서 꿈과 행복을 되찾기를 바라는 마음입니다”라고 밝혔다.
지역을 대표하는 여성 중견작가 중 한명으로 손꼽히는 민경옥 화백은 20년이 넘는 시간동안 작품 활동을 이어오며 자신만의 작품세계를 쌓아왔다. 인간의 내면에 대한 깊은 고찰과 그 안에서 발견해 낸 꿈, 행복 등의 메시지는 각박한 현대사회를 살아가는 이들에게 많은 위로와 희망을 전달해주고 있다고 평가받고 있다.
민 화백은 “학창시절부터 미술하고는 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있었어요. 가족들이 모두 미술을 전공했기에 어려서부터 작품을 보는 눈과 회화라는 예술장르에 대한 생각을 키워왔고, 자연스레 저 또한 미술로 전공을 선택하게 됐죠”라고 말했다. 대학에서 응용미술을 전공하고 학업을 이어오던 그는 21년 전 대구에 내려와 자리를 잡게 되면서부터 순수미술에 관심을 갖게 되었다고 한다. 인간 외적인 것이 아닌 자기 스스로가 풍경이나 사물을 바라보고, 그 느낌을 내재화해 표현해내는 것에서 큰 기쁨을 얻을 수 있었기 때문이다. 이에 그는 수채화를 통해 꽃과 나무, 산과 들에서 느껴지는 감성을 자신만의 색채로 그려내고자 힘써왔다. 그리고 이는 보다 내면의 느낌에 중점을 둔 반구상, 비구상으로 발전하게 됐고, 아크릴 물감이 주는 느낌을 활용한 독특한 작품세계로 이어지게 됐다. 

진실한 영혼의 모습을 담아내는 예술을 펼치고파
민경옥 화백은 자신이 생각하는 진정한 예술이란 ‘느낌을 표현하는 것’이라고 말했다. 눈으로 본 것을 그대로 그리는 것보다는, 내가 생각한 것, 내 안에 있는 것, 내가 꿈꾸는 것을 얼마만큼 잘 전달할 수 있느냐가 중요한 가치라는 생각이다. 민 화백은 “자유롭게 사는 것처럼 보이는 사람도 사실 그 안을 살펴보면 어떤 룰이나 틀에 갇혀서 살아가는 경우가 많아요. 때문에 사람들 안에는 언제나 자유에 대한 갈망과 꿈에 대한 욕구가 존재하죠. 제가 작품을 통해 표현하고 싶은 게 바로 자유와 꿈에 대한 이야기에요. 우리가 정말로 바라는 게 무엇인지를 진정으로 깨달았으면 하는 바람이죠”라고 설명했다. 많은 관객들이 민 화백의 작품을 보며 행복함을 느끼고, 긍정적인 에너지를 얻었다고 말하는 이유가 바로 이 때문이다. 잊었던 혹은 잊혀졌던 꿈을 되찾는 과정을 통해 삶의 생명력을 다시금 얻게 되는 것이다. 
보다 인간 내면의 풍경에 집중하는 그의 작품세계는 위대한 화가 ‘빈센트 반 고흐’의 영향을 크게 받은 것이라 한다. 한평생 고독한 삶을 살아온 한 인물, 그러나 깊은 고뇌를 통해 따뜻한 인간애와 영원성을 추구했던 고흐의 삶이 그에게 진한 감명과 공감을 불러일으키고 있는 것이다. 민 화백은 “작품에 영혼을 담아내는 것, 내 마음을 진실하게 담아내는 것이 그리 쉽지만은 않을 거라 생각해요. 하지만 제가 앞으로도 평생 추구하고, 완성을 향해 나아가고 싶은 것은 바로 그러한 방향이라 생각하고 있어요”라고 전했다.
한편, 민경옥 화백은 대한민국수채화대전, 현대여성미술대전, 경북미술대전, 세계여성미술대전 등의 다수의 공모전에서 수상한 바 있으며, 대구수채화협회大作展, 한국중견작가초대전, 영호남교류전, 대구아트페스티벌, 서울오픈아트페어, 부산아트쇼 등에서 대중들과 만나왔다. 또한 2008년과 2011, 2015, 최근 무학갤러리에서 열린 전시까지 4회에 걸쳐 개인전을 가졌다. 민 화백은 “앞으로 개인전을 위한 작품 활동에 더 주력할 뿐 아니라, 보다 많은 관객들을 만나기 위한 국제아트페어나 해외 교류전 참가도 계획하고 있어요. 제 작품을 통해 많은 분들이 삶의 희망과 행복을 얻을 수 있길 바라는 마음이에요”라고 말했다. 이에 덧붙여 그는 “대구지역에는 여느 지역 못지않게 많은 훌륭한 작가들을 배출하고 있지만, 작가들을 위한 지원은 타 지역에 비해 아직도 부족한 상황인 것 같아요. 대규모 전시회(비엔날레)나 교류전 등 예술가들이 활동 할 수 있는 무대가 더욱더 많아질 수 있도록 작가들에게 형평성 있는 관심과 지원이 필요 합니다”라고 당부의 말을 남겼다. 꿈을 가지고 살아간다는 것이 얼마나 행복한 일인지를 알려주고 싶다는 그의 바람이 우리 삶의 소중함을 일깨워 줄 메시지로 널리 퍼져나가길 기대한다.

Min delivers her message of dream to modern people
Min held a solo exhibition at Muhak Gallery in the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency building on 7th to 30th June. She displayed her series work ‘ing-dream’ at this exhibition and said “Dream must continue as long as we live. I hope my works can make people feel their inner freedom and find their dream and happiness.”

As a renowned local artist in Daegu, Min has built her art world for the last 20 years through her insight in the inner world of mankind; the dreams, happiness and joy. Min makes these elements alive onto her canvas and delivers her message of comfort and hope to busy modern people today.

“My family members are all art majored so it was natural for me to grow interest in art and eventually took a major in applied arts at university.”

Min settled down in Daegu 21 years ago where she started to grow her particular interest in pure art for she found a great pleasure in expressing her inner feeling about the things onto canvas. She started with watercolors for flowers, trees and mountains and developed into half to non-figurative in order to create unique works. 

Art that delivers true souls
Min says that true art is to express one’s feeling. Rather than drawing things as they are, she says, delivering what one feels and dreams and the things inside onto canvas as more important. 

“People who seem to lead a free life are often found that they are bounded by their own inner rules and frames. That’s why people always dream of being free and it’s the theme of my works which I use as media to help people realize what we really want in our lives.”

Many people who have seen Min’s works often voiced together that they felt happiness and positive energy as the works aroused their lost or long forgotten dreams.

Min says that she was greatly inspired by works and life of Vincent Van Gogh for he lived a lonely life but with warm heart and humanity. 

“It’s not easy to deliver one’s true soul onto works but I would like to say that its’ rather about the direction and process to completion that I willingly pursue.”

Min obtained a master’s degree at Hongik University Graduate School of Art and is taking a PhD course in counseling psychology at Seoul Hanyoung University at the moment. She is serving as the director of the Korea Art Psychology Counseling Center and a counseling psychology professor at Concordia International University US. She held or participated in exhibitions at the National Assembly building, Unhyeongung Museum, Kyungin Museum of Fine Art, Hongik Museum of Art, Seoul Art Center Gongpyeong Gallery and Philadelphia Cheltenhan Museum of Art. 

“I’m going to focus on solo exhibitions while continuously participate in art fairs and overseas exchange exhibitions. I hope more people can find hope and happiness through my works.” Min added “There are many artists in Daegu but it seems that they do not receive sufficient support. I think more exhibition opportunities need to be provided for them to display their works.”
