국내 최고 수준의 중목구조 건축전문가 그룹, ㈜아이앤하우징
지난해 9월 경주에서 발생한 지진은 대한민국을 충격에 빠뜨렸다. 전국 대부분의 지역에서 감지될 정도로 강력한 지진과 이후 600여 회에 걸쳐 계속된 여진이 한반도가 더 이상 지진 안전지대가 아님을 증명한 것이다. 이에 정부에서는 법적으로 모든 건축물의 내진 설계를 의무화했으며, 예비건축주들 또한 내진설계에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 이러한 가운데 최근 가장 큰 주목을 받고 있는 곳이 바로 중목구조 전문기업 아이앤하우징이다.

건축주와의 논의를 통해 완성된 설계도면의 1차 검토를 수행한 뒤 일본에 보내면, 현지에서 2차적으로 내진설계 구조를 검토한 후 건축자재의 프리컷(pre-cut) 설계에 돌입하게 된다. 이렇게 생산된 자재는 자체 물류시스템을 통해 신속하게 공사현장으로 배송되며, 약 3~4일이면 골조를 완성시킬 수 있게 된다. 자재 생산에서 공급, 시공에 이르기까지 최단루트를 활용하는 One-Stop 시스템은 공사기간을 크게 단축시켜 비용의 절감을 가능케 하는 것은 물론, 중간 유통마진 없이 보다 합리적인 비용의 시공을 제공하는 토대가 된다. 뿐만 아니라 아이앤하우징에서는 끊임없는 연구를 통해 기능성과 내구성을 극대화한 하이브리드 빔 구조목을 개발, 활용하고 있으며, 히노끼 토대를 사용함으로서 토대의 내구성을 강화하고 벌레 등에 대한 살충 및 살균 효과를 구현하는 데에도 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다.

그리고 이러한 도전을 함께하며 큰 힘을 실어주고 있는 인물이 바로 중목구조 건축에 있어 국내 최고의 전문가로 꼽히는 감은희 소장이다. 최근 JTBC의 인기 프로인 <내 집이 나타났다>에 중목전문 건축가로 특별 출연하며 국민적인 반향과 관심을 불러일으킨 감은희 소장은 우리 삶의 안전과 건강을 위해선 중목구조 건축이 보다 확대될 필요가 있다고 강조했다. 그녀는 “프리컷 방식의 중목구조 건축은 자재 로스의 최소화, 건축 폐기물 처리 비용의 절감 뿐 아니라, 우수한 단열성으로 난방비 절약과 이산화탄소 배출량 감소, 피톤치드에 의한 스트레스 해소와 심폐기능 강화,살균 효과 및 정서 안정, 내부의 구조재 노출을 통한 자연스러운 원목 인테리어 효과까지도 구현할 수 있습니다”라고 그녀는 설명했다. 하지만 이러한 장점에도 불구하고 현재 국내 중목구조 시장은 성장에 한계를 보이고 있다. 감은희 소장은 “중목구조 공법이 수입자재를 사용한다는 점에서 일부 비용이 발생하는 것은 사실이나, 현재의 고비용은 불합리하게 책정되고 있다는 것이 저희들의 생각입니다. 또한 현재 국내 기술력으로 최대 7층까지도 건축이 가능함에도, 건축법상의 제약에 발목이 붙잡혀 있는 상황입니다”라며, 지속적인 문제 제기와 대중화 노력을 통해 이러한 점을 극복하는 데 앞장서 나가겠다고 포부를 밝혔다. 내년 2월, 국내 최대 규모의 박람회를 통해 한층 진화된 모습을 선보일 계획이라는 아이앤하우징. 이들의 거침없는 도전과 열정이 우리 삶의 모습을 더 나은 방향으로 이끌 마중물이 되어주길 기대해 보자.

Korea’s top ‘jungmok (timber frame) structure’ specialist
The earthquake that hit the south west part of Korea several months ago encouraged the government to legally force newly built buildings to follow seismic design codes. In a sense, the impact of the earthquake was not strong enough than the increasing level of people’s interest in living in a safe building as a result. And it also motivated building companies to bring up measures for earthquake-resistant materials and methods. Located in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, I & HOUSING is attracting a great deal of attention for rational and efficient eco-friendly construction methods built on ‘jungmok (timber frame) structure’: the wooden frames are connected each other through grooves without using spikes and have 7 times stronger tensile force than reinforced concrete. The frames carbonize the surface when in fire to prevent the spread and can stand still for as long as 100 years thanks to their excellent durability. About 60% of timber houses in Japan, for example, where earthquake is common, have been using this ‘jungmok structure’ for a long time. And I & HOUSING directly imports the timbers from one of the best timber companies in Japan. I & HOUSING sends the floor plan of a house to Japan and the timber company cuts the wood accordingly and sends them back to the site in Korea. This reduced the cost at a significant level and assembling the frames to stand takes only about 3 to 4 days. Meanwhile, I & HOUSING took the initiative in development of its own hybrid beams with enhanced durability and functionality and is receving positive feedback. 

Spreading excellent functions of ‘jungmok structure’
Satisfying the taste of the client is as important as making sure of the safety of the building by ‘jungmok structure’. And in order to reflect any changes of the client’s mind, I & HOUSING built the system to deliver the changes directly to the manufacturer in speed. CTO Kam Eunhee of I & HOUSING recently appeared on JTBC <Housing Building Project> as a special guest and aroused an echo in viewers’ mind with ‘jungmok structure’. “Jungmok structure not only is about earthquake-resistant but also about better environment, insulation and healthy living. It can cut the heating bills and carbon dioxide emission and improves cardio pulmonary function.” Despite these excellent advantages of ‘jungmok structure’, the method is still less practiced in reality. “It’s true that the Japanese timbers cost you more but good things doesn’t come cheap and I think it rationally priced. I’d also like to point out that ‘jungmok structure’ can build up to 7 storey building but the current regulation in Korea doesn’t allow it. I think there needs to be a revision if we are to promote this safe and eco-friendly construction method.” Meanwhile, CTO Kam makes herself busy preparing ambitiously for the largest architecture fair held next February. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
