TMO leads commercialization of technologies

"Mid and long term technology management is needed“
The TMO(Technology Management Office, head Song Jin-kyu) of University Industry Liaison Office of the Chonnam National University was established in June 2016 with the goal to build a 'technology management governance' and to bring up effective management plans. The TMO is focusing on building the mid and long term technology management plans and is pushing forward the creation of the activation foundation for R&BD strategy and technology management, the activation of industry-university cooperation and the startup promotion and support. The University Industry Liaison Office of CNU drew 2.221 billion won sales through technology transfer in 2015 and it was the first case in Korea among national universities acting as regional hub universities. And the figure went up to 2.382 billion won the next year and the University Industry Liaison Office of CNU ranked No.1 among regional hub universities in the sector of technology transfer. Especially, the University Industry Liaison Office of CNU singed a contract worth 1M US dollars with the Australian company EcoMag Ltd. in August 2015 to transfer 'Hydrate Magnesium Carbonate Manufacturing Method' and in July last year invited 4 billion won investment in return to transfer the world's first 'Synthetic Peptides for Promoting Osteogenesis' at 1.3 billion won. As a result, the University Industry Liaison Office of CNU secured the biggest support fund for the BRIDGE project from the Ministry of Education and also for the 'University TLO & University Technology Holding Company Support Project from the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. Quite recently, the University Industry Liaison Office of CNU has been appointed for 'Social Customized LINC+ Promotion Project' by the Ministry of Education and has secured 22 billion won support fund for 5 years. 

Close cooperation and support system
Chonnam National University introduced 'CNU 100 Club' vision last year to gather in-house technology, R&D infrastructure and excellent cases and is actively carrying out Co-Work project that can push forward co-research(joint research), winning state funded projects, technology transfer and setting up startups. The 25 in-house companies of CNU 100 Club are currently provided with customized support programs including the provision of information, researcher exchanges, technology commercialization and new business ideas. Oradentics Co, Ltd., for example, received product performance evaluation, IP portfolio building and state project support for 'Lactic acid bacteria inhibiting bad breath' and as a result the company released 'PROBIO DENTI' to the market last February. MIZLINE Co., Ltd. on the other hand, increased the sales to 9.16 billion won as of 2016 from 1 billion in 2014 with various support on 'Leg Model for Setting Up Pressure Standard and Measuring the Pressure of Medical Stockings' while Energy Planet Co., Ltd. drew 400 million won investment with the support for technology commercialization. Kim Hyung-suk, Vice President of University Industry Liaison Office of CNU said "We will keep increasing the number of the in-house companies of CNU 100 Club through the mid and long term perspective."

"Rational regulations are needed"
The recent change to the Income Tax Law by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance last December categorized 'the compensation for employee's invention' in the 'earned income' and is imposing up to 40% tax on it. But it not only discourages researchers and inventors but also the industry-university cooperation. Therefore, bringing up rational regulations are absolutely needed especially in this age of the coming 4th Industrial Revolution where the importance of R&D in technology and science is becoming higher than any other eras of the whole human history. <Power Korea> hopes that the University Industry Liaison Office of CNU will take a great part in advancement of the technologies Made in Korea.
