예향(藝鄕)의 도시라 불리는 광주. 수많은 문인들이 모여들어 호남가단(湖南歌壇)을 형성했으며, 남종화와 판소리의 고장이기도 한 광주는 2년에 한 번씩 아시아 최초이자 대표적인 현대미술축제로 성장한 광주비엔날레가 열리는 도시이기도 하다. 이에 이번호 월간 파워코리아에서는 역사와 시대를 넘어 세계가 인정하는 문화예술의 성지로 거듭난 광주의 랜드마크, 광주시립미술관을 찾아가봤다.

현대적 변화와 도약을 꿈꾸다
1992년 8월, 지방 공립미술관으로서는 국내 1호로 개관한 광주시립미술관은 지난 25년 간 광주의 전통적·문화적 정체성을 상징하는 문화예술공간으로 자리해왔다. 특히 남도예술 특유의 전통성을 잇고 견지하면서도 새로운 변화와 모색을 보여준 작품들과 5.18민주화운동과 관련된 민주·인권·평화도시로서의 시대정신을 보여준 작품, 지역미술을 포함한 한국의 다양한 현대미술작품 컬렉션을 보유하며 과거와 현재를 잇는 통로로서의 역할을 다해왔다. 
1995년 제1회 광주비엔날레를 개최하며 세계적으로 위상을 높인 광주시립미술관은 지난 2012년부터 매년 지역 미술인들을 해외에 소개하는 「문화도시 광주展」을 개최하고 있다. 그리고 지난 2009년부터 베이징에 창작센터를 운영하고, 2015년부터 상하이와 광저우의 미술문화기관과 연계하여 지역작가들이 국제적 네트워크를 구성할 수 있도록 작가교환 프로그램을 추진하고 있다. 취임 4년차를 맞이하며 광주시립미술관의 현대적 도약을 이끌고 있는 조진호 관장은 “저희는 지역 미술계의 발전과 도약에 더욱 큰 힘을 실어주고자 여성·원로·신진작가들의 의견을 골고루 청취하고 있습니다. 또한 세계 미술의 흐름을 국내 관객들에게 소개하고 문화예술의 저변을 확대하기 위한 사업도 꾸준히 추진해오고 있습니다. 앞으로도 미술관 운영의 안정적 시스템과 매뉴얼을 구축하여 현대 미술관이 나아가야 할 발전적 방향과 새로운 문화예술 경영의 패러다임을 제시해나갈 방침입니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 일환으로 광주시립미술관은 2005년부터 아시아의 다양한 미술관들과 상호방문 기획전을 마련해 시민들에게 아시아 작가들을 소개하고, 한국작가를 국제무대에 선보이는 전시를 추진하고 있다. 또한 타이베이시립미술관과 공동으로 기획하여 지난 2016년 8월, 「2016광주비엔날레기념 한국·대만현대미술전」을 개최하기도 했다. 

문화예술의 저변 넓히는 다양한 전시 개최
지난 3월 3일부터 진행되고 있는 「LEE UFAN」展은 하정웅미술관 개관을 기념하는 특별기획전이다. 1993년 처음 인연을 맺은 뒤 광주시립미술관과 역사를 함께해 온 하정웅 컬렉터는 지금까지 전국의 국공립미술관에 일생동안 수집한 미술작품과 역사적 자료 만여점을 기증해왔다. 특히 광주시립미술관에서 보유하고 있는 하정웅컬렉션은 2,523점에 이르며, 이에 작품의 효율적 관리와 공개 기회 확대, 연구 교류의 장 마련, 기증과 나눔문화의 확산에 기여하고자 하정웅미술관이 개관되기에 이르렀다. 이번 전시는 그 중에서도 하정웅컬렉션의 진수이자 핵심이라 할 수 있는 이우환 작가의 작품을 모은 것으로, 대중들에게 잘 알려진 1974년작 ‘점으로부터(From Point)’ 시리즈부터 2012년 최근 신작 ‘대화(Dialogue)’ 시리즈에 이르기까지 이우환 회화사의 전모를 살필 수 있는 기회가 되리라 전망된다. 
한편 지난 3월 28일부터 본관 1층에서 진행 중인 홍성담 작가의 「세월오월」 전시는 아직까지도 진실이 규명되지 않은 세월호 참사 3주기를 추모하는 전시로서 국가적 비극이었던 세월호 참사를 기억하고, 다시는 불행한 역사가 되풀이 되지 않기를 바라는 마음으로 마련되었다. 특히 세월호의 성공적인 인양과 맞물려 큰 주목을 받은 이번 전시는 지금까지 매주 6천여 명의 관람객이 방문하는 놀라운 관심을 이끌어내고 있다. 그밖에도 본관 2층에서는 6월 항쟁 30주년을 기념하여 이상호, 전정호 작가의 「응답하라 1987展」 이 진행되고 있으며, 3층에서는 가정의 달을 맞아 온가족이 행복하게 관람할 수 있는 진원장 교수의 「꿈의 정원」 전시가 열리고 있다. 

인사동 G&J 광주·전남갤러리 개관, 전국에 남도미술 알릴 것
지난 2016년 10월, 서울 인사동에 ‘G&J 광주·전남갤러리’가 개관됐다. 이곳은 광주와 전남지역 작가들이 서울에서 자신들의 역량을 펼칠 기회를 제공하고자 광주시와 전라남도의 협력과제를 통해 마련된 것으로 약 90평 규모의 전시 공간에서 단체전, 개인전 등 다양한 전시가 개최될 예정이다. 현재 전남문화관광재단과 함께 갤러리를 공동운영하고 있는 광주시립미술관은 이미 지난 2008년 서울 인사동에 ‘갤러리LIGHT’를 개관하며 지역작가들의 서울 진출을 지원해왔다. 이후 2012년 사간동으로 장소를 이전하여 ‘GMA갤러리’로 명칭을 바꿔 운영하기도 했다. 이번 ‘G&J 광주·전남갤러리’ 개관은 그간 수많은 지역작가들의 서울 작품전을 지원해 온 광주시립미술관의 노하우를 잘 녹여낼 수 있는 기회인 동시에, 더 많은 지역의 미술인들에게 혜택을 제공할 수 있는 발판이 될 것으로 전망된다. 
그밖에도 광주시립미술관은 다양한 콘텐츠를 통해 지역 내 문화를 향유하는 계층의 저변을 확대하고자 노력해나갈 계획이다. 청년예술인지원센터를 통해 청년작가의 재교육과 양성, 인적 네트워크 구축 등에 힘을 쏟고 있으며, 어린이갤러리 전시와, 공원 잔디광장을 이용한 실외 전시 등 미래 세대인 어린이와 청소년들이 미술에 보다 큰 관심을 가질 수 있도록 다양한 프로그램을 구상하고 있다. 뿐만 아니라 시교육청 및 일선 학교와의 협력을 통해 보다 유익하고 효율적인 단체관람이 이뤄질 수 있도록 개선된 프로그램을 개발하고 있다. 조진호 관장은 “현대적 의미의 문화예술은 단순한 관람이라는 수동적 형태보다는 참여형, 체험형의 능동적 형태로 전환되고 있습니다. 저희는 지역민들의 사랑을 받는 미술관, 지역의 문화와 전통, 정체성이 함께 살아 숨 쉬는 복합예술공간으로 거듭나고자 최선의 노력을 다하겠습니다”라고 밝혔다.

Changes for new leap forward
Gwangju Museum of Art was opened in August 1992 as the first local public museum and it has played a regional art and cultural center for the last 25 years. It promoted the characteristics of the southwest region of Korea with art works themed on the May 18 Democratic Movement, human rights, peace and changes for new leap forward. The presence of Gwangju Museum of Art started to be recognized globally on the occasion of the 1st Gwangju Biennale in 1995. Making the most of that momentum, the museum has been holding 'Cultural City Gwangju Exhibition' to promote regional artists since 2012. The museum opened a creative center in Beijing in 2009 and in 2015 started exchange programs in cooperation with art and culture organizations in Shanghai and Guangzhou, China. "We listen carefully to local artists regardless their age and sex for balanced promotion while constantly inviting overseas artists to deliver global trend. We try to avoid complacency but to constantly change for up to date art trend home and abroad" says the director Jo Jin-ho of Gwangju Museum of Art. As part of this effort, the museum held in August 2016 '2016 Gwangju Biennale Korea-Taiwan Modern Art Exhibition' in cooperation with Taipei Fine Arts Museum.

Diversity riches art and culture
Opened on March 3, the LEE UFAN Exhibition is a special exhibition held to celebrate the opening of the Hajeongwoong Art Gallery. Ha Jeong-woong is an art collector who has been with the Gwangju Museum of Art since 1993. He donated 10,000 art works and historical data to art museums and galleries of which 2,523 to the Gwangju Museum of Art. The opening of the Hajeongwoong Art Gallery aimed to promote donation culture and research exchange. The exhibition this time displays the works of Lee Ufan including 'From Point (1974)' and 'Dialogue (2012)'. Meanwhile, the artist Hong Sung-dam's exhibition 'Sewol-Owol' is being held on the first floor of the museum from March 28 and the exhibition commemorates those who lost their lives to the Sewol ferry disaster. The exhibition is drawing weekly 6,000 visitors. Other current exhibitions of the museum are 'Respond 1987' by Lee Sang-ho and Jeon Jeong-ho on the second floor which commemorates 30th anniversary of the June Democratic Movement and 'Dream Garden' by Prof. Jin Won-jang on the third floor themed on the occasion of May, the month of Family. 

G&J Gwangju Jeonnam Gallery opens in Insa-dong, Seoul
G&J Gwangju Jeonnam Gallery opened its door in Insa-dong, Seoul in October 2016. The artists from Gwangju and South Jeolla Province gathered their strength to in order hold exhibitions in this 297 square meter gallery on a regular basis. The gallery is co-managed by the J Art, Culture & Tourism Foundation and the Gwangju Museum of Art. The latter actually opened 'Gallery LIGHT' in Insa-dong in 2008 to promote local artists to Seoul and moved the gallery to Sagan-dong with the new name 'GMA Gallery' in 2012. Meanwhile, Gwangju Museum of Art fosters regional talents through the Young Artists Support Center and plans to promote art to children through the Children's Gallery and by using the outside lawn square. "Visiting an art museum in modern terms is about participation and experience-driven rather than just appreciating the works in standing. For this reason, we are exerting our effort in turing the museum to an art complex where local residents engage themselves in various art programs." <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
