세계무대에서 빛난 한국 오페라의 저력
오페라(Oprea)는 유럽문화의 상징이자 총체다. 음악적 요소는 물론 문학과 연극, 미술, 무용 등 유럽문화의 르네상스를 이끌어온 다양한 요소들이 서로 조화를 이루며 하나의 작품을 만들어내는 것이 바로 오페라다. 하지만 유구한 역사를 가진 유럽문화의 모든 정수가 녹아들어 있다는 점에서 이를 쉽게 접하기 힘들었던 우리나라 대중들에게 오페라는 꽤 오랜 시간 동안 낯설고 어려운 예술장르 중 하나로 여겨져 왔던 것이 사실이다.
올해로 창단 26주년을 맞이하는 사단법인 글로리아오페라단은 1991년 창단 이래 한국 문화예술의 발전과 국민들의 문화의식 증진을 위해 최선을 다해왔다. 세계적인 고전 명작들을 우리나라 관객들에게 소개하며 정통 오페라의 대중화에 기여했을 뿐 아니라, 신진 음악가 발굴과 창작오페라의 해외진출에도 힘쓰며 세계에 한국 오페라의 위상을 높이는 데에도 일조해왔다. 지금 우리가 푸치니, 베르디 등의 작곡가와 ‘투란도트’, ‘라 트라비아타’, ‘카르멘’ 등의 작품명을 낯설지 않게 느끼게 된 것이나 한국이 아시아 최고의 오페라 강국 반열에 오른 것도 수많은 오페라인들의 이와 같은 노력이 있었기 때문이라 할 수 있다. 지난 26년 간 글로리아오페라단을 이끌어 온 양수화 이사장은 “흔히 오페라를 비싸고, 어려우며, 일부 계층만 즐기는 문화라고 생각하는 편견이 있습니다. 하지만 조금만 마음을 열면 눈과 귀가 즐겁고, 가슴으로 뜨거운 감동을 느낄 수 있는 오페라만의 매력과 진면목을 알 수 있습니다”라고 강조했다. 
글로리아오페라단은 창단 후 26년 동안 오페라 28작품과 115회 공연, 수십여 회의 콘서트를 치러냈다. 1995년엔 일본 동경 히도미홀에서 한국오페라로는 최초로 창작오페라 ‘춘향전’을 공연했으며, 1996년 미국 클레이튼 아트센터, 2004년 프랑스 파리 모가도르 극장에서도 한국의 오페라를 미국과 유럽 무대에 최초로 소개하는 역사를 쓰기도 했다. 이는 서양인들이 자신들의 문화라고 자부해왔던 오페라 장르에서 한국이 가진 저력을 널리 알리는 동시에, 이후 한국 오페라가 세계에 진출할 수 있는 초석을 놓았다는 점에서 큰 의의를 가진다. 또한 재능 있는 후배 성악가들을 발굴·육성하고자 지난 2011년부터 개최해 온 ‘양수화성악콩쿨’은 오는 10월, 제7회째를 맞이하며 세계를 무대로 활동할 한국 성악가들의 등용문 역할을 다하고 있다.

7년 만의 국내 공연 ‘마농 레스코’, 푸치니 유품도 함께 선보일 예정
오는 6월 9일, 글로리아오페라단은 창단 26주년을 맞아 세계적인 천재 작곡가 푸치니의 기념비적인 오페라 ‘마농 레스코’를 예술의전당 오페라극장에서 선보인다. 국내에서는 7년 만에 무대에 오르는 이 작품은 푸치니의 고향 루까시립극장의 예술감독 겸 연출가 Aldo Tarabella, 푸치니재단 기획감독 Cataldo Rusoo의 참여와 푸치니 오페라를 가장 많이 지휘한 업적으로 푸치니페스티벌에서 최고 공로상을 수상한 지휘자 Marco Balderi의 섬세한 곡 해석을 통해 관객들에게 전달될 예정이다. 사치와 허영심으로 끝내 파멸에 이르는 ‘마농’역에는 라 스칼라극장에서 데뷔 후 세계 전역에서 활동 중인 Daria Masiero와 고전과 현대를 넘나들며 다양한 배역을 훌륭히 소화하는 Maria Tomassi가 캐스팅 됐으며, 마농을 향한 헌신적인 사랑을 보여주는 귀족청년 ‘데 그뤼’역은 2014년 ‘베로나 아레나 오페라 콩쿨’에서 우승해 오페라 ‘투란도트’로 성공적 데뷔 후 유럽에서 활동 중인 Dario Di Vietri와 ‘제5회 양수화성악콩쿨’에서 대상을 수상한 이형석이 맡을 예정이다. 그 외에도 한국 최정상급의 성악가와 스텝들이 최고의 무대를 만들어나갈 이번 공연은 마농 레스코 초연작품 무대의상과 원작대본, 푸치니가 직접 내용을 적은 원본 자료들, 싸인이 든 자필 편지, 푸치니의 유품과 푸치니의 생애를 다룬 비디오가 아시아 최초로 전시·방영될 예정이라 푸치니오페라를 사랑하는 국내 관객들에게 더욱 의미 있는 시간이 될 전망이다. 양수화 이사장은 “마농 레스코는 이탈리아의 전통적 음률과 서정적인 리듬, 장엄한 앙상블과 교향곡의 웅장함을 느끼게 하는 푸치니의 색깔이 잘 묻어난 작품으로서, 젊은 푸치니에게 ‘베르디를 계승할 오페라 작곡가’라는 명성을 안겨주기도 했습니다. 저희는 원작에 충실하면서도 저희만의 특색을 담은 창조적 재해석을 통해 관객들에게 다채로운 감상의 경험과 깊은 감동을 전달하고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 끝없는 도전과 열정으로 한국 오페라의 르네상스를 열기 위한 이들의 여정은 아직 진행형이다. 글로리아오페라단이 전하는 오페라의 벅찬 감동과 전율, 진한 여운과 함께 다가오는 신록의 계절 6월을 맞이해 보는 건 어떨까.

Making opera easy for the public to enjoy

The power of Korean opera shines on the global stage!
Opera is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work of literature or play in singing, acting and dancing. The rich history of opera in Europe has drawn people of all walks of life throughout the time. Yet it was not long that the word 'opera' has become a common form of entertainment for many people in Korea. First opened its door in 1991, Gloria Opera Company has taken a part in spreading opera to more people in Korea through a number of globally renowned operas. The company has exerted efforts in fostering talented singers and actors and pioneered overseas markets for Korean operas. "People tend to think that opera is expensive, difficult and belongs to a certain class of the society. But opening the door of your heart just a little bit, you can see the charm of opera and its splendidness" says the general director Yang Soo-wha of Gloria Opera Company. The company has given a total of 115 performances of 28 operas for the last 26 years including the creative Korean opera 'Chunhyangjeon' for the first time at Hidomi Hall in Tokyo in 1995 followed by at Clayton Center for the Arts, US the next year and at Mogador, Paris in 2004. For this reason, Gloria Opera Company is praised for building a foundation for Korean operas entering the global stage. Meanwhile, the company has held 'Yangsoowha Vocal Music Competition' since 2011 in an effort to foster talented singers.

Manon Lescaut comes to Seoul Arts Center
Gloria Opera Company is to perform Puccini's Manon Lescaut on 9 June on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the company. The opera held after 7 years of its last performance in Korea and it will be collaborated with the director and art director of Municipal Theater of Lucca Aldo Tarabella, the director of the Puccini Foundation Cataldo Rusoo and the best achievement prize winner conductor of the Puccini Festival Marco Balderi. The company gave the role of Manon who goes to bane from vanity and extravagance to a global level singer Daria Masiero and to a versatile singer Maria Tomassi while the role of Des Grieux who ardently falls in love with Manon to Dario Di Vietri who won 2014 Arena Di Verona and to Lee Hyung-suk who won the grand prize at the 5th Yangsoowha Vocal Music Competition. Other roles will be shared by Korea's top classic volcalists. Alongside the performance, the mementos of Puccini such as letters and music scores will be displayed on the day for the first time in Asia. "Manon Lescaut is one of the most popular operas of all. It contains the traditional Italian melodies, solemn ensemble and magnificent orchestration. The work gave Puccini the title 'the composer who succeeds Verdi'. For Manon Lescaut this time, we reinterpreted the original story in order to give a different level of pleasure in watching and being touched."
