창원시 팔용동에 위치한 삼광기계공업㈜은 1972년 부산 동래구에서 창업 이래 수입품으로 구성된 승용차, 버스 및 중장비 차량의 A/S 부품 국산화를 통해 마모된 부품의 교체소요 기간 및 비용을 줄이는데 큰 기여를 해왔다. 이 후 1986년 창원국가산업공단으로 이전한 후 공장부지 확장 및 기반시설 현대화를 통해 기계제조업체로서의 기반을 마련했으며, 국산화를 통해 쌓은 기술력과 정밀가공설비 및 측정설비에 대한 지속적인 보완과 핵심인력 육성을 바탕으로 공작기계, 산업기계, 방위산업 분야에서 세계적인 경쟁력을 갖춘 기업으로 성장하여 다양한 부품을 국내에 판매 및 해외에 수출함으로써 제조업 발전 및 국익창출에 기여하고 있는 대표적인 강소기업이다.

삼광기계공업의 주요 생산품으로는 공작기계 사업부의 스핀들, 심압대 조립체, 테이블베드 유니트 등의 서브 조립체 및 초정밀 수치제어형 수직머시닝센터, 산업기계 사업부의 와이어 제조설비인 신선기, 연선기, 권취기, 그리고 방위산업 사업부에서는 장갑차용 변속기, 차량 현수장치용 부품,동력전달장치인 구동드라이브 엑셀, 포탑 구동장치용 정밀 기어박스, 미사일 부품, 탄약운반장구, 궤도조립장비 등이 있다. 세 사업부의 독보적인 기술력과 다양한 아이템은 고객의 요구에 적극 대응할 수 있는 힘이 되어 해외수출 시장 다변화의 토대가 되고 있다. 

세계시장에서 중국이 거대한 시장과 자본력, 저임금을 바탕으로 가격경쟁력에 우위를 점하고 있는 상황에서 국내 산업계는 그간 새로운 경쟁력 발굴에 고심해왔던 것이 사실이다. 이에 지금까지 기술력의 바탕과 차별화된 품질로 경쟁력을 갖춘 상품으로 고객만족 실현을 통해 글로벌시장에서 강소기업으로 지속 발전해나가고 있는 삼광기계공업의 사례는 4차 산업혁명 시대에 국가 산업과 중소기업이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한 것으로 높이 평가 받고 있다.

1979년 오일파동 이후 매 10년 주기로 불황을 겪으면서도 종합기계업체로서 이 자리에 오기까지 삼광기계공업을 이끌었던 것은 ‘기본’ 과 ‘원칙’을 최우선 하는 전서훈 대표의 한결같은 고집이었다. 전 대표는 “제조업은 모든 산업의 초석입니다. 작은 부품 하나가 산업 전체를 마비시킬 수 도 있기에 반드시 기본을 준수하고 원칙을 지키는 정신이 필요합니다. 각자의 역할과 자기가 맡은 임무를 충실히 수행할 때 비로서 고객들에게 만족과 감동을 줄 수 있다고 생각합니다.” 라고 강조했다. 그의 이러한 철학은 기업운영과 직원복지, 사회공헌 등 여러 방면에 두루 스며들어 있다. 삼광기계공업은 ‘인간중심경영, 미래중심 경영’의 슬로건 아래 직원 모두에게 적극적인 주인의식을 강조해왔다. 특히 각종 인센티브 부여와 새로운 인사고과 제도의 도입을 통해 직원들이 품질개선에 적극적으로 참여할 수 있도록 장려했으며, 직원 교육 및 해외 연수, 자녀 학자금 및 경조금 지원 등 복리후생 증진과 경영성과 배분 등 협력적 노사관계를 구축해 경영혁신의 성과가 생산성 향상에 반영되도록 힘썼다. 뿐만 아니라 단순히 이익만을 추구하는 기업에서 벗어나 꾸준한 기부 활동 및 장학금 기탁 등의 사회 활동을 지속적으로 펼쳐오고 있으며 협력사 동반성장을 위한 대금 지금일 준수 및 현금 결제, 협력사 직원 직무 교육지원 등을 통해 사회책임경영을 강화하고 있다. 

마지막으로 전 대표는 “빠르게 변화하는 글로벌 시장에서 살아남고 성장하기 위해선 기업도 시대와 현실에 맞게 능동적으로 움직여야 한다” 고 당부했다. 이에 삼광기계공업 또한 제조업을 중심으로 기계와 전자, IT가 결합하는 융복합 기술의 개발을 위해 심혈을 기울일 예정이며, 국내외 기업과의 협력을 통해 기술역과 가격경쟁력을 확보해나갈 계획이라 밝혔다. 기업은 국가가 성장하기 위한 양분을 제공하는 뿌리이다. 변화와 혁신을 통해 세계로 나아가고 있는 이들의 노력이 대한민국 경제 성장의 밑거름이 되어주길 기대한다.

Original technology perfects precision machine tools
Located in Palyong-dong, Uichang-gu, Chang City, Samkwang Machinery was established in 1972. With its years of expertise in the fields of precision machine tools, defense industry and industrial machines, Samkwang Machinery today has grown to be a company with global competitiveness. The company succeeded localizing the technologies used to be imported from overseas with the government support and is now exporting them back to overseas countries including France, Canada and Singapore. The company started with imported car parts at first and jumped into parts for defense industry. Moving its base to the Changwon Industrial Complex in 1986, it secured the foundation to grow as a machine manufacturer and started to make investments in precision machine tools and measurement facilities as well as design, quality management and human resource. In 1994, the company introduced ISO9002 system and upgraded the technologies in cooperation with Doosan Infracore in 1995 and turned the manufacturing system to OEM. It actually made a contribution for Doosan Infracore to growing as the world's third precision machine tool maker. In 2008, Samkwang Machinery started to export wire equipment such as wire-drawing machine and hemp softner and achieved $5m export. The innovation and achievements of Samkwang Machinery are well received for it have suggested a direction of the national industry in the coming age of the 4th Industrial Revolution. The company obtained ISO9001 in 2000 and ISO14001 in 2004. It built a quantitative assessment system by introducing '6 Sigma' in early 2000 and obtained single PPM certificate to achieve 'zero defect' in 2009. In recognition of the achievements, CEO Jeon received a model SME entrepreneur in 2014 and a proud Changwon National University alumni prize in 2016. 

"We will growth with the society"
Sticking to the basics and the principle has always been the driving force of Samkwang Machinery from the very start. "The manufacturing industry is the foundation of all industries. We sometimes witness that just one part can paralyze the whole industry. For this reason, it is very important to always stick to the basics and the principle as well as to a great sense of responsibility." This management philosophy of CEO Jeon not only applies to the manufacturing field but also to good working environment and welfare of employees. Jeon has emphasized on the importance of people-centered management and future-oriented management. A variety of kinds of incentives are awarded to employees with excellent promotion policies to keep the motivation of employees rolling. To name a few of the programs, staff training, overseas field trip, scholarship and compensation for family events stand out while transparent management and fair payment are reinforced by cooperative relationship between the management and the labor. It is also worth mentioning of his social contribution activities. Jeon donates part of his profits to various social welfare centers and scholarships to underprivileged students. Last January, he donated \300,000 to Changwon National University to be used as a development fund and last April 40 desks to Bonglim Study Room of the same university. When asked about future plan, Jeon said "We will work on converging our technologies with IT in order to secure global competitiveness both in technology and price." <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
