문화예술계에서 나름의 위치를 확고히 다진 인물을 지칭할 때 흔히 ‘명장(名匠)’이라는 말을 사용한다. 올곧은 신념과 고집, 장인정신으로 자신의 분야에서 최고의 자리에 오른 인물을 일컫는 말이다. 이와 마찬가지로 산업 현장에서 명장이라 불릴 수 있는 인물이 있다면 강운공업㈜의 김춘식 대표를 빼놓을 수 없다. 지난 38년간 자동화기계 제조 분야에 몸담으며, 우리나라 산업자동화의 역사에 일조한 김춘식 대표를 <월간 파워코리아>가 만나봤다.

신념과 고집이 이끌어 낸 최고의 기술력
자동화기계 제조 전문기업 강운공업㈜은 1979년 창립 이래 공장자동화를 위한 기술개발에 몰두해왔다. 특히 군사무기, 광케이블, 화약, 전자, 전선, 자동차 부품의 조립 및 운반, 공급, 가공, 검사 등의 생산자동화 분야에의 폭넓고 풍부한 경험 및 노하우를 축적하며 국내 자동화기계 산업을 대표하는 기업으로 성장해왔다. 기업부설연구소를 설립 끊임없는 R&D 투자를 통해 자체적인 역량을 강화하는 한편, 일본과의 기술제휴로 자동화기계 분야의 선진기술을 습득하는 데에도 노력을 아끼지 않았던 것이 이 회사의 성장요인이다.        
김춘식 대표는 지금의 강운공업을 만든 것은 업계를 선도할 수 있는 최고의 기술력을 구축하기 위해 기업의 모든 구성원들이 합심하여 노력해온 것, 그리고 이를 통해 고객사와의 굳건한 신뢰관계를 구축해왔기 때문이라 강조했다. 그는 “창립 이후 지난 38년간 쌓아온 노하우는 다양한 분야에 걸쳐 고품질과 고정밀, 고생산성 설비를 생산하여 공급하는 원동력이 되고 있습니다. 또한 이를 통해 고객 및 협력사의 발전에 기여할 수 있다는 점에서 저희들은 무엇보다 큰 자부심과 긍지를 느끼고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.
지금까지 강운공업이 탄생시킨 수많은 제품들은 다방면의 산업분야에서 제 역할을 톡톡히 하고 있다. 각 산업현장에서 중요한 역할을 담당하는 자동너트 가공기, 베벨링기, Swaging machine, 전동모터 성능 시험기, 자동차용 Shock Absorber Valve 및 클립자동삽입기, 감쇠력 시험기 등의 자동화 설비는 물론, 통신 분야에서 사용되는 통신케이블 Stripper, 통신케이블 Lap tape forming machine, 과 방위산업용으로 천무 훈련용 포드, 155mm 포탄 제조라인, MLRS 제조라인, 뇌관제조 자동화 등을 공급하고있다. 특히 클립자동삽입기와 광통신 케이블 시험기의 경우 기존 고가의 수입품을 이용하였던 것을 대체할 수 있어 원가 절감과 경쟁력 강화에 일익을 담당하고 있다.

보다 안전하고 편리한 환경을 만들어가고자 쉼 없는 노력을 경주하고 있는 강운공업은 지난 2014년, 자회사인 ㈜강운파인엑스를 설립하고 방재산업분야에도 새롭게 진출했다. 강운파인엑스에서 생산하고 있는 고체에어로졸 소화기 ‘파인엑스(FineX)’는 비화약 방식의 점화시스템을 갖춘 첨단·친환경 소화기다. 기존 소화기와 비교해 40분의 1 수준의 저장 공간만 필요하고, 무게도 10% 정도에 불과해 공간효율성이 뛰어난 것은 물론 소화성능도 5배가량 뛰어나다. 뿐만 아니라 소화 시 산소를 제거하지 않고, 염소·불소와 같은 독성도 생성하지 않아 소화 장소에 사람이 있어도 안전하게 사용이 가능하다. 국내 최초로 고체에어로졸 소화기를 개발한 ㈜한화로부터 대·중소기업 상생의 일환으로 기술이전 받아 ‘파인엑스’를 개발한 강운파인엑스는 이를 통해 ‘글로벌 안전 서비스 기업’으로서의 입지를 구축해나갈 계획이다. 

함께하여 행복한 동행, 꿈을 향한 열정
김춘식 대표는 “최근의 산업현장은 빠르게 변화하고 있고, 생산 공정 또한 다양화, 다변화되고 있습니다. 이러한 요구를 충족시키기 위해선 끊임없는 연구와 개발이 필수적이라 생각하며, 이를 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다. R&D 분야에의 지속적인 투자와 노력으로 매일 새로운 모습으로 거듭나고 있는 강운공업은 이러한 성과를 인정받아 거의 매년 ㈜한화의 최우수 및 우수 협력업체로 선정되고 있으며, 2012년 방위사업청장 표창, 2014년 기술보증기금 이사장 및 인천중소기업청장 표창, 2015년 중소기업청장 및 인천시장 표창, 2016년 중소기업진흥공단 이사장 표창을 수상하기도 했다.

그리고 지난 2016년 12월 16일, 인천 부평구에 위치한 혜광학교 대강당에서 열린 ‘인천시유망중소기업연합회 정기총회’에서 김춘식 대표는 제6대 신임회장으로 선출됐다. 이로서 김 대표는 앞으로 2년간 200여 개 회원사와 함께 기업 경영과 기술 전반에 관한 교류 활동을 추진하는 한편, 신제품 개발과 해외 시장 개척을 위한 연합회 차원의 각종 지원 활동을 이끌어나가게 되었다. 김 대표는 “최근의 어려운 경제 상황 속에서 인천지역 제조업체들 또한 위기에 처해 있는 것이 사실입니다. 이에 저희 연합회의 활동이 조금이나마 지원과 혜택이 될 수 있도록 노력해나갈 계획입니다. 또한 연합회의 활동이 실질적인 성과를 거두기 위해선 회원사 분들의 관심과 참여가 필요합니다. 앞으로 펼쳐질 상호 교류활동과 공동 협력 사업에 많은 지지를 보내주길 부탁드립니다”라고 당부의 말을 남겼다.

Automated machines specialist Kangwoon Industry Co was established in 1979 with focus on development of technology needed for process automation. Today, the company has grown as Korea's No.1 automated machines specialist based on its 38 years of professionalism in the field. Its innovative production automation has benefited many industries such as weapons, fiber-optic cables, electronics, electric wire and car parts. CEO Kim Chun-sik strengthened competitiveness of the company by running a development team and establishing an affiliated research center through which he had made a continued investment in R&D while pushed forward technical tie-up with Japanese companies in the same field. "38 years of continued investment in R&D has been the driving force of our making high-quality, high-precision and high-productive automated machines. This, in addition to our one-minded working environment and trust in our services, is what made us as successful as today. We are really proud that our automated machines can make the manufacturing process of our partner companies more efficient and economic" said Kim. The innovative automated machines of Kangwoon Industry Co include automated nut processor, beveling machine, auto cylinder grinding machine supply device, swaging machine, auto rubber hose cutter, auto motor/shock absorber valve/absorber damping force testers, communication cable stripper/jelly washing machine/lap tape forming machine, and automatic pipe cutting machine. The localization of fiber-optic cable tester in particular has reduced the unit price but raised competitiveness of made in Korea. To extend its production lines to disaster prevention equipment, CEO Kim established an affiliate Kangwoon FineX in 2014. FineX is a solid aerosol fire extinguisher loaded with eco-friendly non-gunpowder type ignition system. It requires only 1/40 of storage space of the existing fire extinguishers and only 10% of the weight but 5 times more performance. It does not remove oxygen nor create chlorine and fluorine during the operation which makes the people around unharmed. Kangwoon FineX received technology transfer from Hanwha, the developer of the solid aerosol fire extinguisher, as part of the win-win project of major and small and medium companies. 

Growing together
"Investment in R&D is very important as the production process are becoming more and more diversified. That's why we make a continued investment in R&D to secure cutting edge technologies" said Kim. In recognition of its effort, Kangwoon Industry Co has been chosen as the best and an excellent partner company every year by Hanwha and also received citations from Defense Acquisition Program Administration in 2012, from Korea Technology Finance Corporation and from Small and Medium Business Administration Incheon in 2014, from Mayor of Incheon and from Small and Medium Business Administration Incheon in 2015, and from Small & Medium Business Corporation in 2016. In December 2016, he was elected as the 6th chairman of Incheon Promising Small & Medium Business Association and he is determined to work for the interests of the more than 200 member companies of the association during his 2 year term. Kim said "I will bring substantial help to the member companies in this time of economic downturn both internally and globally through exchanges and cooperative projects and I need an active interest and support of the member companies to make it happen together.
