The brand awareness of Korean cosmetics is very high in China as it is reported that 7 out of 10 Chinese visitors to Korea buy cosmetic products. Myeong-dong, the hottest destination of Chinese tourists in Korea, is filled with cosmetics shops, proving the fever of K-Beauty among the Chinese. CEO Lee Gwang-ho of Bogwang Korea foresaw the fever even before it started and set up a business in China. Lee saw the potential by chance when he traveled China with his friends. He noticed the signboards that say ‘Made in Korea’ which were offered at cheaper price than the products made in the US and Europe but with more credibility and preference. Hinted at this, he tried this and that to enter the market but only in vain. He then turned his idea to partnership from doing everything alone. Lee says “Chinese have their unique sentiments and cultures. The reason many Korean businesses have failed was that they saw the market as the market without understanding about the people and the culture. Chinese tend to roll up their sleeves if it is the matter of their colleagues and partners which you can see how innocent and good people there are. I can say that they have been the driving force of my business in China. I’d like to particularly give my thanks to my foster father (novelist) who I came to know of in China, my oldest brother (works in the city hall) and my second brother (film director) who always have given me an unsparing support. They are the ones who made me better understand Chinese people and the culture and I wish to spend my late years with them in China.”

Sailing toward the world over China
Bogwang Korea exports Korean cosmetics to China. CEO Lee built the foundation for the export channels through meeting numerous local buyers. He signed an exclusive sales contract with Beijing Musong for ‘MIC-AINI’ in 2011 after which Bogwang Korea pushed forward a continuous investment in R&D to secure raw materials manufacturing technique. In September 2013, Bogwang Korea signed a strategic MoU with ‘IMAK’, a Chinese functional health food company and released ‘IMAK’ cosmetics made with combined raw materials of both IMAK and Bogwang Korea. At the end of 2013, they opened a cosmetic shop in Weihai City in China and started to release their own brands in earnest by obtaining a license for cosmetics production and sales in April 2014. The first brand was ‘SHUNSONGE’. Lee says “Cosmetics basically is for esthetic but we added ‘antibacterial’ and ‘treatment’ functions for differentiation. Oriental medicinal materials also were added to give safety and nutritional effect and scent of the cosmetics reflected Chinese preference to increase volume of sales.” The result was a great success. Bogwang Korea opened its own store ‘RABIU’ in Sandeungsung in China to enhance the business. Currently, Bogwang Korea is developing functional cosmetics in cooperation with a group of professors at Kyungwoon University. The company already has developed a raw material effective for pimples and ‘Skin Bath Care’ and instant whitening cream which can remove dead skin cell by spraying it like mist. Lee says “The competitiveness of SME comes from ‘technological prowess’ with which we have achieved a big success in China.” The excellence of Bogwang Korea’s products was well proved at the ‘Chinese Trade Delegate’ dispatch project held by North Gyeongsang Province in April last year where the company drew an order of USD 300,000 from an e-commerce company and a cosmetics company in Wuhan.
