‘자생풍수’를 통한 풍수학의 중요성 후대에 잘 전하고파

‘풍수(風水)’는 수천 년 동안 이어져 내려오며 우리 삶의 다양한 부분에 막대한 영향을 미쳐왔다. 멀게는 나라의 수도를 정하는 일이나 조상의 묘를 쓰는 일부터, 가깝게는 살아갈 집을 짓거나 생산 활동의 터를 잡는 일까지 풍수는 우리 민족의 생활 깊숙한 곳까지 스며들어 있다. 이에 한국풍수선양재단은 천년의 역사를 지닌 우리 정통풍수를 지키고, 그 우수성과 과학성을 널리 알리고자 다양한 활동을 펼치고 있다.

‘자생풍수’의 가르침을 전하다
한국풍수선양재단의 성제 곽정진 이사장은 “풍수는 인류가 지구상에 살기 시작한 이후부터 태동하여 수천 년 긴 시간을 거치면서 조상들이 온몸으로 몸소 체험하고 터득하여 인간에게 이로운 자연환경을 종합, 집대성 해놓은 과학적 통계학이라고 할 수 있다”라며 우리의 생활 전반에 풍수가 있다고 해도 과언이 아니라고 강조했다. 한발 더 나아가, 기가 융결된 곳에 조상의 묘를 쓰고, 살아가기 위한 집을 짓고, 마을이나 도시들을 만들어 평안한 삶을 살게 하는 것, 즉, 살아있는 사람의 삶에 이로운 영향을 주고자 하는 것이 정통풍수의 핵심이라 말한다. 그는 “풍수지리는 조상에게 효도하는 상생의 효(孝) 사상이며, 자손들의 번창을 바라는 뿌리 사상입니다. 그저 좋은 곳에 조상의 묘를 써두고 방치하는 것이 아니라, 자주 찾아가 고인의 은덕을 기리고, 그 명당이 주는 좋은 기(氣)를 내 몸에 받아들이는 것이 더 중요합니다. 풍수가 충(忠)과 효(孝)의 연장선이라 불리는 까닭은 바로 이 때문입니다”라고 강조했다.
그의 이러한 주장은 신라시대의 고승인 자장율사, 의상대사, 원효대사의 ‘자생풍수(自生風水)’에 근거한다. 그는 “흔히 고려초 도선국사를 한국 풍수지리학의 시조로 보고 있지만, 사실 그 이전의 자장율사, 의상대사, 원효대사가 한 시대 앞선 우리 정통풍수라 할 수 있습니다”라며, “자장율사는 풍수를 통해 5대 적멸보궁의 터를 잡았고, 의상대사는 화엄 10찰을 지었으며, 원효대사는 여수 향일암 터를 잡았습니다. 명당에 사찰을 세워 널리 불가의 가르침을 전하고, 만인을 구제함과 나라의 번영을 바라는 것이 그 분들의 뜻이었습니다”라고 전했다.

대학에서 불교를 전공한 뒤 우봉 손창옥 선생을 만나 18년간 풍수학에 대한 가르침을 받고, 이후 여러 스승을 찾아다니며 절터, 집터, 사업장, 아파트, 수맥 등 다방면에 걸친 배움을 얻은 곽 이사장은 전국 방방곡곡 명산대천을 찾아다니며 명당 찾기를 필생의 업으로 삼아왔다. 실제로 지난 2009~2013년 우리나라 최초로 조성된 문화복합산업단지인 ㈜KD POWER의 춘천 카이로스 단지를 부지선정 단계부터 설계 및 배치까지 상세하게 자문을 해주었음은 물론, 이외에도 ㈜만선의 일산 본사 사옥과 ㈜토니모리의 본사 사옥에 대해 매입 자문을 진행해 주었다. 또한 바쁜 와중에도 「옥수진경」, 「회중풍수요집」, 「신풍수론」, 「수맥과 풍수인테리어」 등의 책을 펴내며 풍수학에 대한 쉽고 올바른 이해를 돕고자 힘써왔다.

특히 풍수학의 우수성과 과학성을 널리 알리고 보급하기 위해 그는 한국풍수선양재단 홈페이지를 통해 동호인들과 함께 직접 답사하고 분석한 전국의 명당 정보를 공개하고 있다. 홈페이지에는 지금까지 보존되고 있는 향교터, 사찰터, 사대부집(종가집)의 내력과 집의 구조, 방위 등을 양택론에 의해 해설한 내용과 각 성씨별 시조, 공, 묘소 자리나 아직 묘를 쓰지 않은 명당 자리 등을 답사하여 음택론에 의해 해설한 내용이 연재되고 있다. 또한 일반인들을 위해 명당 보존관리 및 감정, 묘지조성 컨설팅, 수맥차단, 상가 점포 및 사무실 풍수인테리어 상담 등의 자문을 제공하고 있다. 

풍수는 충·효의 연장선, 조상들의 지혜에 귀를 기울여야
특히 그는 충과 효를 상징하는 ‘12정려각’으로 잘 알려진 현풍 곽씨 문중의 일원으로서 ‘충효세업 청백가성(忠孝世業 淸白家聲-충과 효를 대대로 내려오는 업으로 삼고, 청렴결백을 집안의 명예와 명성으로 삼는다)’의 가르침을 이어가고자 한시도 자기수양을 게을리 하지 않고 있다. 여기서의 ‘정려(旌閭)’란 효자나 열녀, 충신 등의 행적을 높이 기리기 위해 그들이 살던 집 앞에 문을 세우거나 마을 입구에 작은 정각을 세워 기념하는 것을 말하는데, 현풍 곽씨 일문에 포상된 12정려를 한 곳에 모은 것이 바로 이 ‘현풍곽씨 12정려각’이다. 정류재란 때 안음 현감으로서 전세가 불리한 상황에서도 일가족을 이끌고 왜적과 싸우다가 순국한 곽준과 그 가족, 임진왜란 때 비슬산 중턱에 피란하던 중 병든 부친을 대신하여 차례대로 목숨을 바쳤다는 곽재훈의 네 아들 등 정려가 내릴 때마다 따로 여각을 세우던 것을 영조1년(1725) 이후 현재의 자리에 모아 세웠다고 한다. 

곽 이사장은 “현풍 곽씨 종택이 자리한 솔례마을은 대니산(大尼山) 남쪽자락에 자리하여 약 800년 이상을 대대로 이어져 왔습니다. 이곳은 뒷쪽에 위치한 대니산 전체가 말이 낙동강 물을 마시러 물로 뛰어드는 형국을 하고 있어 ‘와마형(臥馬形)’ 명당이라 할 수 있습니다. 이는 이 지역에서 충과 효, 열녀가 끊이질 않는 기원이 된다 할 수 있습니다”라고 말했다. 

현재 현풍 곽씨 12정려각은 대구광역시 문화재자료 제29호로 지정되어 있으며, 지난 2013년에는 대구시에서 7억 3천만 원을 들여 새롭게 단장하기도 했다. 한 문중에 12개의 정려가 내려진 것은 전국 어디에서도 찾아보기 힘든 매우 드문 일로서, 그 역사적 의미와 현대를 살아가는 우리들에게 전하는 정신적 유물로서의 가치를 높이 평가받은 것이라 하겠다. 

곽 이사장은 “풍수를 알아가다 보면 자연과 어우러져 살아온 우리 조상들의 지혜를 엿볼 수 있습니다. 하지만 요즘 우리의 정통 풍수가 시들어가고 잊혀져가는 것에 안타까움을 금할 수 없습니다. 혼란하고 험난한 사회 분위기 속에서 우리 조상들의 지혜에 귀를 기울이는 것은 앞으로 나아갈 바른 방향을 찾는데 더없이 훌륭한 방법이 될 것입니다”라고 전했다.

‘Autogenous Feng-shui’ arouses importance of geomancy

Delivering teachings of ‘Autogenous Feng-shui’
Kwak Jung-jin, President of Korea Feng-shui Enhancement Foundation said “Feng-shui has begun the very moment when humanity started to appear on the planet earth. It is the science of statistics that has gathered beneficial environments of nature. Its knowledge and knowhow have passed down to thousands of years. Feng-shui is everywhere in our daily life. The core of the authentic Feng-shui is to build grave, house, village and city on the spot or land where the energy is condensed. Kwak continued “Feng-shui is a philosophy of filial duty and prosperity of offspring. It is not effective just to build a grave in an energy-condensed spot but to visit to pay respect every now and then in order to receive the energy into the body.” ‘Autogenous Feng-shui’ was practiced by great monks such as Jajang, Euisang and Wonhyo. “Some say that the great monk Dosunguksa as the progenitor of Korean Feng-shui but the aforementioned three monks were the ones who actually practiced it first. Jajang built 5th Jeongmyeolbogung based on Feng-shui and Euisang built 10 hwaeom temples and Wonhyo found the spot for Hyangiram (training center) in Yeosu. Their will was to spread teachings of Buddha to save the people and the nation by building temples on the energy-condensed spots.” Kwak majored in Buddhism and was taught by Son Chang-ok (nickname Woobong) for 18 years after graduation during which he had met and visited many teachers and temples, buildings and mountains in search of the best energy-condensed areas. Kwak gave advice on deciding the site and layout of Chuncheon Kairos Complex of KD POWER, the Korea’s first cultural industrial complex completed in 2013. Kwak also gave advice on purchasing the Japanese head office of MANSUN and the head office of TONYMOLY. He wrote four books which are <Oksoojingyung>, <Compendium of feng shui for an audience>, <New theory of feng shui> and <Water vein and feng shui interior>. He regularly visits here and there with his club members and makes the gathered information open to public on the homepage of his foundation. He publishes as a series the findings of Confucian temples, Buddhist temples, nobleman’s houses and their bearings based on Eumtaengnon (Yin theory). He also provides Feng-shui consulting for normal people about the site of grave and its value and management and the best spot for stores and offices. 

Feng-shui pays attention to wisdom of ancestors 
Kwak is a member of Hyeonpung Kwak clan famous for ‘12 Jeongnyeogak’, a symbol of royalty and filial duty. Under the family motto ‘Royalty, Filial Duty and Integrity for Honor and Fame’, Kwak is diligent in training himself. ‘Jeongnyeo’ means a small pole erected in front the village or the house with excellent practice of royalty and filial duty. The Hyeonpung Kwak clan received 12 of it and the family members gather them in the current one place after the period of King Yeongjo (1725). Kwak Jun (and his family), who fought against the Japanese during the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592–1598) and the four sons of Kwak Jae-hoon who sacrificed their lives in protection of their father while fleeing in the same invasion period are two good examples of Jeongnyeo. Kwak said “The head family house in Sollye Village has been on the foot of Daeni Mountain for more than 800 years. The location is highly energy-condensed area where the whole mountain is like a horse jumping into the Nakdong River to quench the thirst. This is the sauce of the royalty and filial duty.” The 12 Jeongnyeogak was designated as No.29 cultural asset of Daegu and the city renovated it in 2013 with the budget of KRW 730 million. It is rare that a family can receive 12 Jeongnyeo. Kwak said “We come to know wisdom of our ancestors by knowing Feng-shui. It’s regretful however that it seems to disappearing day by day today. Yet it still is a good idea to find an answer or two to get through this hard time with the help of Feng-shui.”
