김완수 여행가는 한국 최고의 농기계 발명가 겸 사업가가 사진 촬영과 여행을 취미로 삼기 시작해 세계 100여 개국을 사업과 관광차 방문한데이어, 마침내 인류의 신비인 양극점에 도달했다는 마치 동화 같은 사연으로 유명하다. 그런 김완수 여행가가 이제는 포토북 작가 겸 펭귄 콘텐츠 사업가로 변신했다. 남극의 마스코트 펭귄 사랑과 환경보호, 문화와 지역홍보를 아우르는 참신하고 독창적인 사업을 진행 중인 펭귄문화재단 & 펭귄월드 Co의 김완수 대표를 만나본다. 

전에 없던 펭귄 포토북과 펭귄열차 야시장 스타트업, 펭귄문화재단 출발 거점 되다
세계 최초로 민간인 남극전문 일주여행가를 표방해 7차례 탐험여행을 다녀온 김완수 여행가가 올해 들어 펭귄 포토북 작가, 그리고 남극의 마스코트 펭귄을 소재로 한 콘텐츠 및 자선문화재단인 ‘펭귄문화재단’과 ‘펭귄월드 Co’를 지난 8월 1일 출범하며 왕성한 활동을 보이고 있다. 지난 9월 2일 익산솜리문화예술회관에서 성황리에 개최된 국내 최초의 펭귄 창단 공연에 이어, 김 대표는 11월 4일부터 양일간 개최된 국내 최초의 펭귄 야시장인 ‘익산 펭귄열차 야시장’으로 익산의 열차문화와 어린이와 여성들이 가장 좋아하는 전 세계 1위 동물인 펭귄을 소재로 결합된 펭귄 이벤트를 진두지휘했으며 연말에 재개장 예정이다. 김 대표가 남극을 탐험하며 담아온 사진으로 제작한 ‘스토리텔링 펭귄 포토북’과 ‘2017 펭귄 캘린더’, 그리고 ‘펭귄보석’ 등 펭귄 관련 상품 판매, 펭귄을 테마로 한 분식 같은 각종 먹거리와 ‘친환경 펭귄쌀’ 등 식재료 판매, 펭귄쇼 공연, 펭귄역 광장에서의 ‘황제펭귄상’ 공개, ‘펭귄벤치’, ‘펭귄포토존’, ‘펭귄꽃밭가든’, ‘날으는 펭귄조각전’, ‘펭귄이글루’ 전시가 있는 이 행사는 향후 전북의 자랑스러운 향토행사와 한국방문관광객들을 위한 익산 테마관광의 가능성을 보여주었다. 익산문화관광단체 협의회장이자 극지방을 탐험하며 고향 익산의 상징 깃발을 꽂고 돌아올 만큼 애향심이 강한 김 대표는, 그동안 우리나라에서 볼 수 있던 펭귄 전시나 이벤트가 여건상 남반구의 작고 귀여운 펭귄에 한정되어 있었음을 깨닫고, 고향에서 남극의 펭귄을 소개하며 모두가 즐길 수 있는 콘텐츠를 만들고 싶었다고 전한다. 황제펭귄, 아델리펭귄처럼 남극에만 사는 펭귄, 킹펭귄, 친스트랩펭귄, 마카로니펭귄 등 남극과 주변 섬에 사는 펭귄들은 온대기후의 펭귄과 달리 중·대형 사이즈라고 한다. 동물원에서 볼 수 있는 북극곰과 달리 국내에서는 탐사가 한정된 만큼 남극 펭귄을 접하기도 쉽지 않아 김 대표는 남극의 생명체들을 사진으로 담을 때 펭귄에 가장 각별한 애정을 보였다고 한다. 그 외에도 김 대표는 세계 여행을 하며 모은 1,200여 점의 펭귄 관련 작품을 펭귄철도야시장과 2018년 개최 예정인 세계최초 펭귄축제와 펭귄박물관을 위해 사용하며, 장차 익산을 펭귄문화 도시로 만들 계획임을 밝혔다. 

독창적인 펭귄 콘텐츠로 남극탐사에 이어 새로운 기록 남길 것
김 대표가 지난 9월 ‘펭귄월드 Co’에서 발간한 스토리텔링 펭귄 포토북은 유명한 동물 스토리텔링 사진집 <the Blue Day Book>의 펭귄 버전이라고 할 수 있다. 나아가 펭귄 사회의 희로애락과 펭귄들끼리 서로 위로하기, 어깨동무, 부리키스, 미끄러지는 등 재미있는 상황들이 짤막한 설명과 담겼다. 이 귀여운 사진집은 58개국이 참가한 제 25회 북경국제도서전에 출품되어, 수많은 출판사와 바이어들의 문의가 쇄도했다. 펭귄 사진을 찍기 위해서는 인간이 자연에 개입해서는 안 된다는 엄격한 남극 관련 국제법에 따라 문명의 흔적을 남겨서는 안 되기 때문에, 조건이 한정되어 펭귄 단독사진을 얻기 힘든 상황에서 스토리텔링 구성이 가능한 150장이 넘는 완성도 높은 사진을 보유한 김 대표의 7회 남극탐험 경력도 화제가 되었다. 김 대표는 세계 자연경관을 모두 섭렵하겠다는 각오로 많은 경비를 부담하며 14,200,000㎢로 단일대륙 세계 5위인 거대한 남극을 다녀오기 시작했는데, 탐사 횟수를 거듭할수록 광활한 자연과 파괴되어 가는 빙하를 보며 거대한 자연 앞에 겸손해지고 남극의 아름다움을 알리고 싶다는 의지가 강해졌다고 한다. 2012년에는 북극곰을 보기 위해 북극 탐사를 거쳐, 남북극점을 탐사한 최초의 사진가 겸 민간 탐사자라는 기록을 세웠지만 김 대표는 여전히 남극 탐사를 완성한 후 북극 탐사도 완성하겠다는 뜻을 밝히고 있다. 연구하고 기부하는 공익 재단을 표방한 만큼, 극지방에 대한 더 많은 경험과 지식이 필요하다는 이유에서다. 

자연과 환경보호, 국위선양과 문화발전에 기여하는 펭귄 사업 발전시킬 것
대성공을 거둔 <뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로>, <해피 피트>, <추위를 싫어한 펭귄 파블로>가 증명하듯 전 세계의 사랑을 받는 펭귄. 남극의 펭귄 사진이라는 쉽고 재미있는 콘텐츠로 지구온난화에 대비하는 세계적인 이슈에 어필하게 될 것이라는 김 대표는 100개국에 거점을 둔 코트라와 손잡고 펭귄 포토북을 해외에 진출시킬 예정이라고 한다. 또한 올해 11월에는 황제펭귄의 사진을 담기 위한 8차 남극 탐험여행을 진행하고, 2017년 1월과 2월에는 남극의 여름을 담기 위한 9차, 10차 남극 여행을 다녀와 가을에는 세계 최초 남극 10회 탐험가이자 사진작가로서 예술의 전당에서 [펭귄 사진전]과 펭귄공연을 기획중이다. 아울러 김 대표는 2018년 경 매 해 개최되는 정식 펭귄축제 출범, 그 다음에는 펭귄 박물관을 세울 예정이라고 한다. 펭귄을 연기하는 펭귄 공연단과 펭귄 행사들이 이탈리아의 <피노키오>처럼 지역과 문화의 상징이 될 그 날을 위해 김 대표는 그동안의 사진을 모은 펭귄 사진전 개최 및 ‘펭귄과 함께하는 남극여행’을 테마로 하는 책과 ‘펭귄 포토북 2’를 내년 봄에 기획해 가을 경 출간할 것이다. 이렇게 장대한 프로젝트를 기획 중인 김 대표의 바람은 앞으로 ‘세계 최초의 민간인 출신 펭귄 전문 사진가’로 불리는 것이다. 김 대표는 5차 여행부터는 드론을 소지하고 펭귄을 자세히 찍을 수 있었으며, 2주 일정의 6차에서는 비행과 여객선을 병행해 다양한 경로로 남극에 도달하고, 한 계곡에 펭귄 30여 만 마리 개체가 있는 장관을 직접 감상한 것이 가장 기억에 남는다고 한다. 이렇게 익산농기계의 대표이사라는 바쁜 생업 속에서 남극과 펭귄으로 지역사회와 환경을 향한 인생을 개척하는 김 대표가 펭귄 계 ‘성공한 마니아’, ‘문화의 창조자 겸 전도사’로 역사에 자랑스러운 이름을 남길 수 있기를 함께 응원해 본다.

The reason people get interested in Kim’s story can be found at his varied career: a developer of agricultural equipment, entrepreneur, photographer, traveller, visitor of 100 countries and polar explorer. Recently, he has added another career: a photo-book writer and penguin contents creator. <Power Korea> met him.

Kim Launches Penguin Notebook and Penguin Train Night Market 
Kim calls himself the world’s first civilian Antarctic explorer based on his visit to the South Pole for 7 times. Inspired by penguins on the pole, Kim established Penguin Cultural Foundation & Penguin World Co on 1 August this year. Kim organized the Korea’s first penguin foundation performance at Iksan Arts Center on 2 September and held Penguin Train Night Market for two days from 4 this month. It was a great success and Kim is holding another one at the end of the year. The market presented ‘storytelling penguin photo-book’, ‘2017 penguin calendar’, ‘penguin jewels’, ‘penguin characters’, ‘penguin foods and culinary utensils’, ‘emperor penguin statue’, ‘penguin bench’, ‘penguin photo zone’, ‘penguin garden’, ‘flying penguin sculpting’ and ‘penguin igloo’. The event demonstrated a great possibility of boosting the city’s themed tourism. Kim’s love of his hometown is well proved by his planting the flag of the city on the South Pole as the president of the Iksan Culture and Tourism Organization. His love of the Antarctic penguins such as emperor penguin, Adelie penguin, king penguin, chinstrap penguin and macaroni penguin, however, is as big as his love of the hometown. Apart from taking a photo of penguins himself, Kim has collected around 1,200 penguin related works from the world and they will be used for the night market, the world’s first penguin festival and museum which will be materialized in 2018 in an effort to turn the city as a cultural city.

Promoting Protection of Environment 
Kim published Storytelling Penguin Photobook last September as a version of <the Blue Day Book>, a famous animal storytelling photo collection. The book contains lives of penguins telling how they communication each other and with nature. The book attracted a great attention from publishers and buyers from 58 countries at The 25th Beijing International Book Fair. The Antarctic related law allows people to take photos of penguin on the condition that they do not interfere with their lives and the surrounding environment. This means that it is really hard to obtain a photo of penguin but the book contains 150 of them; such a great effort and achievement. Kim’s 7 times of visit to the pole also was on the center stage of the buzzing at the fair. In 2012, Kim explored the North Pole to see the polar bear which brought him the tile; the first civilian explorer visiting both poles. 

Environmental And Cultural-Friendly Penguin Business 
Penguin is loved by many in the world as we can see numerous penguin animations and characters in the market. As an effort to raise public awareness on climate change, Kim, in cooperation with KOTRA which has 100 trade centers in the world, is working on distribution his photobook. Meanwhile, he plans to visit the South Pole this month for the 8th time to capture photos of emperor penguins and the 9th and the 10th next January and February for photos of the day and night of the pole. Kim usually uses drones, airplanes and boats for photo shoots and the result this time will be displayed at Seoul Arts Center coordinated with penguin performance in Autumn next year. Kim also plans to publish a book ‘Antarctic Trip With Penguin (tentative)’ and ‘Penguin Photobook 2’ next year. Although Kim has many titles, he wishes to be remembered as ‘the world’s first civilian turned professional penguin photographer’. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
