아이들의 존재는 국가의 미래를 열어 가는 필수조건이다. 따라서 안정된 보육은 우리사회의 성장 동력을 이끌어내고 보다 발전된 사회로 진입하기 위한 핵심키워드이기도 하다. 특히 자연과 함께하는 보육 환경은 아이들의 정서적, 인성적 측면에 많은 도움을 줄 수 있다. 경주시 안강읍에 위치한 초록별어린이집은 답답한 도심을 벗어나 넓은 공간에서 잔디를 밟으며 아이들이 맘껏 뛰어놀 수 있는 환경을 조성해 주목받고 있다.

자연의 품속에서 자라는  행복한 아이들
맑은 공기와 푸른 잔디가 함께 어우러져 있는 초록별어린이집의 아이들은 늘 밝고 활기찬 웃음으로 미래의 꿈을 키우며 행복한 생활을 하고 있다 . 자연과 친밀한 관계 속에서 활기차게 뛰놀며 스스로 탐구할 수 있는 이와 같은 환경은 고운 심성과 밝고 건강한 어린이로 자랄 수 있는 가장 큰 원동력이기도 하다. 김정순 원장은 자연과 함께하는 교육은 아이들에게 신체적, 정서적 함양을 위한 최선의 방법이라고 강조한다. 김 원장은 “처음에는 상가건물 2층에서 어린이집을 시작했습니다. 하지만 제한적인 공간에서 아이들이 활동하는데 많은 어려움이 있었죠. 지금은 드넓은 자연 속에서  함께 뛰어노는 아이들을 볼 때면 저도 모르게 미소를 짓게 됩니다”라고 답했다. 자연과 함께 할 수 있기에 좋은 점은 이뿐만이 아니다. 아이들과 함께 직접 텃밭을 가꾸기도 하고 작물을 심어 재배한 것으로 요리를 할 수 있어 먹는 걱정도 줄었다. 아이들에게 있어 경험과 체험은 성장 과정에 있어 매우 중요하다. 김정순 원장은 이를 통해 아이들이 직접 참여할 수 있는 기회를 제공해 정서적 안정과 자존감을 키워줄 수 있다고 전했다.

부모와 함께 하는 가정교육이 중요
부모들의 맞벌이 경제활동으로 인해 보육시설의 수요가 급증하는 추세에 따라 부모들의 가정교육이 어린이집을 포함한 보육시설로 점차 확대되고 있다. 아이들은 가정 속에서 이뤄지는 일상생활의 문제 상황 대처 능력과 지속적인 기본생활의 습관교육을 통해 올바른 가치관을 갖고 자신의 행동에 책임을 질수 있도록 성장해야 한다는 것이 전문가들의 견해다.

김정순 원장도 아이들이 갖춰야할 기본적인 소양을 위해서는 집에서 부모에게 받는 유아교육이 매우 중요하다고 지적했다. “아이들의 교육에 있어 가장 중요한 것은 부모들과 함께 하는 교육입니다. 저희 어린이집은 이러한 가정교육에 근접한 교육을 시행하는데 최선을 다하고 있으며,부모님들에게도 집에서 필요한 올바른 유아교육에 대한 대안을 마련하고 있습니다”라고 조언했다. 한편, 어린이집 문제가 자극적으로 이슈화되면서 이를 향한 학부모들의 신뢰가 크게 떨어지고 있는 현상에 대해 김 원장 역시 깊게 통감하고 있다.. .  이로 인해 대부분의 어린이집 교사들이 힘들어 하는 것 또한 사실이며, 자칫하면 악순환으로도 이어질 수 있습니다”라고 토로하며 이를 극복하기 위해서는 제도적 개선과 가정 안에서 부모 역할이 매우 중요하다고 덧붙였다.

보육정책 개선 이뤄져야
요즘 들어 어린이집 운영에 있어 점차 가중되고 있는 것이 있다. 바로 문서작업이다. 국가 보육정책에 따라 각종 문서를 통해 계획, 평가하고 점검해야 한다. 정작 아이들 곁에 있어야 할 어린이집 교사들이 문서작성 업무로 인해 아이들과 함께하는 시간이 점차 줄어들고 있는 실정이다. 또한 시행되고 있는 정책과 지원 역시 대부분 도시형 계획으로 치우쳐있다. 따라서 비도시형 보육시설의 경우 시행 정책 및 지원 현황에 맞지 않는 경우도 있다. 이에 대해 김정순 원장은 “현재 유아교육 정책은 과도기적인 시기입니다. 수많은 시행착오를 발판삼아 더 발전된 방향으로 나아가는 과정에 있어 좀 더 세분화되고 다양한 현장에 부합될 수 있도록 정책이 마련되었으면 합니다”라고 바랬다. 

끝으로 김 원장은 하얀 도화지와 같은 아이들의 순수함을 그대로 간직하며 자신들만의 건강하고 행복한 그림을 그려 나갈 수 있도록 앞으로도 전 교사들과 함께 혼신의 힘을 다하겠다고 전했다. 자연과 함께 하는  우리 초록별 어린이집 미래의 꿈나무들이 튼튼하게 자라 대한민국의 자랑으로 자라길 바란다

Located in Gyeongju City, Green Star Day Care Center is surrounded by green grass and clean air. Children of the center are always bright and happy. They play with objects of nature and study nature with curiosity in a jolly atmosphere. “Playing and learning in nature is the best way for children to grow sound and good both physically and mentally. With this philosophy in mind, I opened the center on the second floor of a commercial building. But the limited space and concrete materials were not so agreeable and I moved the center to this current location surrounded by nature” explains Director Kim. Kim grows vegetables, makes food and eats together with children. “Letting children experience is more important than teaching them theory in a class.”

“Parents are also responsible for educating their children”
An increasing number of couples working together for a living tend to depend on day care center for their children’s education. But experts say that education is not a one way path to be done, especially the educational institutes, but parents are equally important part of it. “Parents’ active engagement in their children’s education is very important. We take care of them and teach them like their parents do but children show better personality and performance when backed up by their own parents.” When asked about recent mistreatment of children happing in day care centers, Kim said “The centers are 100% responsible. But I’m a little bit worried that the public criticism might target the whole day care centers while many of them are innocent from the bad practices. As for a solution, the government level improvement of the system and policy is much needed alongside advanced social awareness of children.” 

Improvement in day nursery policy is a must 
The recent mistreatment of children from some day care centers has brought a burden on documentation for all day care centers. The problem is that teachers are too busy filling up the documents to take care of children. The priority has changed ironically. Kim also pointed out that fact that the policies are rather designed for the centers in cities and the support system also is not so appropriate. “I see the Korea’s day nursery policy today as in a transition period. They will be more confusion during this period but I hope the government will bring more detailed and customized policies by reflecting each different region and condition” adding that “Meanwhile, we will do our part in taking care of children in diligence and responsibility and growing together with them through playing and learning in nature.”
