Colors ‘arts’ on the millennium-old ancient city of Gyungju
Song Hwee, director of Row Gallery

Excellent dealer and collector take a considerably important part in the global art history. Behind an artist who was influential in their time, there always were dealers who turned them out and sponsored them persistently. Without their efforts to turn out an artist’s work, promoting their values to the world and providing them with impetus to keep on, numerous masterpieces that touch our hearts now wouldn’t have come into the world in the beginning.

Reads the trend of world art with excellent discernment
‘Vollard,’ remembered as one of the most important dealers in the 19th and 20th-century art history, turned out unnamed Cezanne, Picasso and Matisse and exercised a great influence in the trend of art history by maintaining a special relationship with many great artists such as Bonnard, Renoir and Chagall. In the present age, ‘Saatchi Gallery’ in London calling itself a gateway to success as artists is cultivating ways of living for commercial art. Like this, in order for the genre of art to keep receiving new blood and proceed to a higher stage, it absolutely requires a dealer, the subject of connecting such artists to a collector. Row Gallery located at Gyungju Arts Center carries out the role of bridging numerous authors around the country as well as in Gyungju area to collectors and the general public, while helping promising artists go on to a broader world.
Director Song Hwee of Row Gallery, who, after graduating from Gyungbuk University Graduate School of Fine Arts, engaged in creating works for over 20 years opening nine times of private exhibition, has greatly contributed to taking root of art market in Gyungju area and its activity based on his experience as author, excellent appreciative eye on works and talents as gallery director. Director Song recalled, “When I first settled down in Gyungju and opened a gallery, there was no idea of ‘art market’ yet. Probably because history & culture tourism was the chief revenue of the city and main interest of the people, there was no gallery to exhibit works nor the perception of purchasing and owning works by giving money.” However, after opening Row Gallery, as a result of his diligent efforts to introduce authors’ works and promote their value, art market began to sprout in Gyungju and things have so changed that ‘Gyungju Art Fair’ managed by the city has opened four times.
Besides, Director Song also introduced works of famous authors based on regions other than Gyungju to citizens, arousing interest in and response to culture and arts. He introduced works of promising domestic authors to famous art fairs overseas, such as Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York, in an effort to promote Korean art to the global stage. Though involving a considerable amount of  investment and resultant risk, he says there is much to earn simply by experiencing the trend of global art market in person and introducing our authors to them. He is also giving lectures at Dongkuk Univ., Daegu Art Univ., etc. helping the students grasp the flow and trend of the world art and decide on their future course of career through education.

Long-term investment and support needed for cultivating culture and arts
In the last April, Row Gallery held <2016 Gyugju Portray Exhibition>, where established authors from Korea, China and Japan visited Gyungju, experienced the city’s deep and rich historic culture and then put their impressions into work. This exhibition annually being held following 2014 Exhibition for Korea, US and Russia and 2015 Exhibition for Korea and France was first planned by director Song Hwee to enhance the status of Korean art in the world by experiencing and exchanging each country’s arts, culture and history together. Director Song clarified, “Gyungju is the best historic and cultural city of Korea containing a millennium history of Silla. It will become a good opportunity to promote the beauty and value of Gyungju to the whole world as well as to help advance Korean art for authors from many countries with different culture and history to gather together here and express their feeling in their respective ways.”

Director Song, who also struggled for cultural and artistic prosperity of the community like this, emphasized his conviction that ‘art’ will serve as catalyst to bring up Gyungju into a global city. As over 8.5 million people visit the Louvre Museum in Paris annually to see the Mona Lisa, cultivating global works and authors is the way for Gyungju to become an attraction for global people, according to him. He also emphasized that long-term systematic investment and support is needed for this.

Director Song indicated, “Culture and arts is an industry to create a tremendous added value, not just it enriches our life. However, as, if a tree grows high, the roots must be solid, making culture prosper should be preceded by the support and investment for authors and related fields of industry.. Currently, the government is making investment in each field for cultural prosperity but I am sorry that it is being conducted with a focus on established authors and large galleries rather than rising authors or smaller galleries.” Besides, he asked, “Currently, Gyungju is having an opportunity for culture and arts industry to grow further in the positive support of the mayor and the city. To make a positive use of this opportunity, it is needed for authors based on Gyungju and citizens to be fully aware and conscious. He promised that his Row Gallery would make the best efforts to contribute in this process to what little part it could.

Director Song Hwee aired his wish to open another gallery in Bomun Resort, a representative tourist attraction of Gyungju. His ‘dream’ about Gyungju becoming a more lively city with beauty of artworks should be able to lay the foundation for giving rise to another masterpiece.
