과학기술이 발달하고 물질만능시대가 도래하면서 인간의 생활은 더 편리해지고 풍요로워졌을지 모르나, 정신적인 부분은 그만큼 빠르게 무너지며 각종 사회문제를 야기하고 있는 것이 사실이다. 지금의 한국사회는 각종 부정과 부패로 얼룩져 있으며, 세대간, 계층간 갈등은 더욱 심화되고 있다. 우리 선조들은 이러한 문제를 해결하고자 인간의 본체(本體)를 탐구하는 학문인 ‘사주(四柱)’를 갈고 닦아왔다. 자기 자신을 돌아봄으로써 앞으로 세상을 어떻게 살아가야할지에 대한 길을 찾고자 한 것이다. 이에 신천학회의 유혜식 회장은 인간의 운명을 이해하고, 세상에 대한 바른 깨달음을 전하는 ‘사주명리학(四柱命理學)’을 통해 현대인들에게 삶의 올바른 방향과 명쾌한 해답을 제시하고자 노력하고 있다.

사람의 운명과 자연의 이치를 연구하는 학문, 명리학
사주명리학(四柱命理學)이란 사람이 태어난 연(年)·월(月)·일(日)·시(時)의 네 간지(干支)를 분석해 나무(木)·불(火)·물(水)·쇠(金)·흙(土) 등 5가지 기운의 상생(相生)·상극(相剋) 관계를 따져 길흉화복(吉凶禍福)을 판단하는 학문이다. 연월일시의 간지 여덟 글자에 나타난 음양(陰陽)과 오행(五行)의 배합을 보고, 그 사람의 선천운과 후천운을 감정하는 것이다. 기록에 의하면 고대 중국의 주(周) 나라 때부터 간지를 근거로 길흉을 판단했으며, 춘추전국시대(春秋戰國時代)에 이르러 간지의 사용이 널리 보급되고, 음양오행설(陰陽五行說)이 확산되면서 이를 결합해 사람의 운명을 판단하는 명리학(命理學)이 발달하기 시작했다. 중국의 현인인 공자도 <주역(周易)>을 해석한 책인 <십익(十翼)>을 지었다고 전해지며, 우리나라에서도 고려시대부터 진행되었던 과거제도에 주역을 필수 교재로 포함시켜왔다. 우리가 흔히 알고 있는 사서삼경(四書三經)의 삼경 중 하나가 바로 주역이다. 나라를 통치하고, 백성을 다스리는 직책을 뽑는 일에 주역을 교재로 삼았다는 점에서 보듯 우리 선조들에게 명리학은 개인의 운명뿐만 아니라 자연과 세상의 이치를 깨닫고, 올바른 길을 안내하는 지침이자 지표였음을 알 수 있다.
그러나 어렵고, 난해한 학문인 사주명리학은 현대에 와서 ‘학문(學問)’으로서의 명맥이 끊기다시피 하기에 이르렀다. 정확한 이해와 공부 없이 명리학을 사적으로 악용하는 일부 역술가들에 의해 ‘미신’이라는 사회적 편견이 자리 잡게 되었으며, 서양에서 들어온 과학적 사고가 주류를 이룸에 따라 수치화하기 어려운 사주학의 특성상 일부 지식층의 외면을 받게 되었기 때문이다. 이에 국내에서도 최고로 손꼽히는 동양철학과 명리학 연구자인 신천학회 유혜식 회장은 사주명리학을 학문의 차원으로 끌어올리고자 체계적인 노력을 펼치고 있다.
4대째 철학업을 가업으로 삼고 있던 집안의 영향으로 14살 되던 해에 이미 철학에 입문한 유혜식 회장은 이후 동양철학 원서를 직역으로 번역하며 철학공부를 시작했다. 대학을 졸업한 후 본격적인 철학업에 뛰어들어 지금까지 38년 간 한 길을 걷고 있는 그는 오랜 연구를 바탕으로 자신만의 독보적인 영역을 구축하고 있다. 유 회장은 기존의 사주명리학이 출생사주(出生四柱)만을 중요시한 것과는 다르게 입태사주(入胎四柱)와 부생사주(復生四柱), 임종사주(臨終四柱)를 포괄적으로 분석하고, 전생과 현생, 후생까지의 삶을 통계학적으로 정확하게 예시하는 ‘신천철학’을 창시했으며, 이를 바탕으로 신천교를 세웠다. 유 회장은 “철학과 종교가 같은 점은 바로 진리를 추구한다는 것”이라며, “사주명리학은 개인의 그릇(命)과 운(運)을 보고, 자신의 정체성 찾고, 세상만물의 진리를 깨우치는 학문입니다. 사주명리학이 기존의 불신과 오해의 편견을 깨기 위해서는 원서 중심의 정확한 이해와 교육이 필요하며, 체계적인 활동과 연구성과를 축적함으로써 신천철학이 학문으로 확고히 뿌리내리는 것이 중요합니다”라고 연신 강조했다.

사회적 편견을 깨고, 명리학이 학문의 위상을 되찾을 수 있는 해법 제시
유혜식 회장은 (사)한국역술인협회, 한국역리학회 경북·대구시 지부 이사를 역임했으며, (사)한국동양운명철학인협회 중앙회의 초대~7대 대의원을 역임했다. 또한 경북동부지부 감사와 경주시 초대 지회장 등을 수행하기도 한 그는 신천전고, 신천전요, 신천전경, 신천전려 등 총 10여 권의 저서도 집필했다. 서양철학에 버금가는 동양의 전통철학이자 학문인 명리학의 명맥을 잇고, 사회적인 편견을 깸으로써 다시금 오랜 위상을 되찾고자 이처럼 왕성한 활동을 펼치고 있는 것이다. 또한 제각기 어렵고 힘겨운 삶을 살아가고 있는 이들에게 위안과 희망을 주고, 위기를 돌파해 나갈 명쾌한 해법을 제시함으로써 저마다의 삶을 더욱 행복하게 변화시킬 수 있는 계기를 만들어주고자 한다. 한결같은 확고한 의지와 신념으로 명리학의 학문적 위상을 드높이기 위해 노력하고 있는 유 회장은 그 공로를 인정받아 매년 정치·경제·사회·문화·종교·학계 등에서 국가발전에 기여한 인물들을 선정해 한국민족정신진흥회에서 발간하는 <2016 現代 韓國人物史 - 종교철학부문>에 등재됐다. 명리학의 가치를 재조명하고자 하는 선구자적 행보가 높게 평가받은 것이다. 
명리학이 지금처럼 체계적인 모습을 갖추게 된 것은 중국 당(唐) 나라, 고대 명리학의 종사(宗師)라 불리는 이허중(李虛中)에 의해서였다. 이후 송(宋) 나라 때의 인물인 서자평(徐子平)은 사주에 음양오행을 결합하여 이를 더욱 체계화 시켰으며, 이것이 천 년에 가까운 시간을 지나 지금까지 이어지고 있는 것이다. 유혜식 회장이 창시한 ‘신천철학’은 이러한 명리학에 현대적인 해석을 더하고, 작금의 혼란스러운 시대에 우리에게 꼭 필요한 진리와 사상을 담아내며 동양철학이 새롭게 나아가야할 길을 제시하고 있다. 현대적인 사주명리학의 새 지평을 열고 있는 신천학회 유혜식 회장의 앞으로의 행보를 주목하자.

Concentrating on academic system establishment of four pillars of destiny and opening a new prospect of eastern philosophy

As the technology is getting developed and an age of materialism has become to us, people’s life is more convenient and more abundant in every way. But, our mental development cannot follow as same and as opposed, it is destroyed fast causing lots of social problems. This polar happenings are everywhere on the planet. Especially Korean society is full of plenty of corruption and graft and conflicts between social levels and generations deeply. Our ancestors trained themselves by studying four pillars with human beings’ principles. President Yoo Hye-Sik of New World Academic Community is trying to suggest a right way and clear answers for contemporary people through learning of four pillars of destiny, which can show some solutions for the world by understanding our destiny. 

A study ‘Life Understanding’ which is researching people’s destiny and nature rule 
The definition of four pillars of destiny is a study to judge the fortunes by analyzing four elements such as year, month, day and time for relation of coexistence and incompatible relation of five vitalities such as tree, fire, water, metal and earth. According to a Yin-yang and five elements combination exhibiting eight letters of the sexagenary cycle, it is to estimate a person’s destiny before life and after life. By the record, since Zhou Dynasty people have predicted the good or ill luck by the sexagenary cycle and when the warring states period came it was prevailed widely and the theory of Yin-yang and five elements was spread out. Then, it was started to be improved a judgment people’s destiny by combining them. 
Confucius who is a sage in China was knows for that he wrote <The Ten Wings>, which is a book translated from <Classic of Changes>. We used to include it to essential subjects of the state examination during the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasty. One of the Seven Chinese Classics the Four Books and the Three Classics that we have known is that <Classic of Changes>. As we see the textbook was a compulsory subject to select students for officers, our ancestors put the ‘Life Understanding’ on a guideline and indication to show right ways and realize the world and nature not only personal fate. However, theory of four pillars of destiny is so difficult to figure out so people didn’t really care for and finally it was almost stopped as an academic study. Also, it became a superstition since some fortune tellers abused it without studying and understanding fully and a social prejudice among the people. Furthermore, we have had lots of western practical thoughts as a mainstream idea generally and some intelligent people ignored it. For that, President Yoo Hye-Sik of New World Academic Community who is the famous scholar in eastern philosophy and Life Understanding fields as best is trying to upgrade the theory of four pillars of destiny as a study systematically. 
President Yoo Hye-Sik already started his philosophy study at 14 because of his family influence. His family has been into this during four generations. For that ambience, he started studying with translating eastern philosophy directly for himself. After graduation from the university, he worked on the philosophy in earnest and it has been 38 years for now. For his unique and long study, he has built up his own matchless area. 
President Yoo analyzed the fate of having a child, the fate of living and the fate of death widely not only the fate of birth. It is different from the exiting theory of four pillars of destiny cares only the fate of birth. He even established a New World philosophy that is showing life before, current life and after life out of statistic. Based on this, he created a New World religion. 
President Yoo emphasized, “The same purpose between philosophy and religion is pursuing the truth. Theory of four pillars of destiny is a study to see personal’s destiny and fortune, to find an identity and to realize the truth of the world. If the theory of four pillars of destiny breaks up the disbelief and misunderstandings, it needs a specific understanding and education focusing on original books first and has to accumulate systematic activities and researches. Then, it is important for a New World philosophy to grow up as a study certainly with a firm root.” 

Breaking up a social discrimination and suggesting solutions to get the academic status of ‘Life Understanding’
President Yoo Hye-Sik of New World Academic Community used to be a member of board of Gyeongbuk-Daegu district of Association of Korea Prognosticator and a representative of Association of Korea Eastern Destiny & Philosophy from the first to the seventh. Also, he was an inspector of Gyeongbuk eastern area and the first head of district of Gyeongju city and wrote 10 books about his religion. Like this, he is doing a great activity to break up the prejudice in this society and to continue the life understanding theory, which is an excellent philosophy in eastern as good as the western philosophy. He wants to get the status back to now. 
President Yoo has been trying to pitch up the ‘Life Understanding’ in an academic way with his certain willingness and belief and has acknowledged. So, he was registered at <2016 Contemporary Korean History – Religion and Philosophy> that is published by Korea National Spirit Promotion Association. This annual book is for people who contribute the nation in politics, economics, social, and culture, religion and academy areas. In his case, he was acclaimed for his pioneering step to shed new light on ‘Life Understanding’. 
When ‘Life Understanding’ had a systematic aspect was by Lee Heo Joong in Tang Dynasty, China. After that, Seo Ja Pyeong in Song Dynasty put that with Yin-yang & five elements of the universe together and made it more systematic and actually his theory has been continued until now. As for President Yoo Hye-Sik, he put more new things to that theory in ‘A New World Philosophy’. These are about modern understandings and suggesting some new ways to go for eastern philosophy with mandatory truth and ism we need in the confusing era. Therefore, we better see where he is forwarding since he is opening a new contemporary four pillars of destiny.
