건축을 사람을 행복하게 만드는 일이다. 건축을 통해 사람들은 행복한 보금자리를 갖게 되며, 꿈을 펼쳐나갈 수 있는 공간을 제공받는다. ㈜율그룹 건축사사무소의 대표이자 전북여성건축가회를 이끌고 있는 김희순 회장은 이처럼 ‘사람을 위한 건축’, ‘행복을 만드는 건축’을 위해 누구보다 열심히 뛰고 있는 인물이다.

전북 여성건축가들의 지위 향상 도모
대한민국에서 ‘건축’에 대한 인식이 변화하기 시작한 것은 비교적 최근의 일이다. 과거에만 해도 건축은 그저 발전과 성장의 도구에 지나지 않았으며, 그 결과로 오로지 생산과 효율만을 강조한 채 그 안에서의 ‘삶’은 도외시한 건축물들이 난립하게 되었다. 그러나 최근 삶의 질에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 주된 생활공간으로서의 건축물이 해야 할 역할이 부각되면서 ‘좋은 건축’이 높은 관심을 받고 있다. 김희순 회장은 이러한 대중들의 인식을 더욱 확산시키고, 사람을 중시하는 건축문화를 정착시키고자 노력해왔다. 지난 2013년 출범한 전북여성건축가회는 김 회장이 전북지역 여성건축가의 지위향상과 복리증진을 구현하고 건축문화의 발전에 기여하고자 동분서주한 끝에 얻어낸 결과물이다. 김 회장은 설립 준비 위원장을 도맡으며 지회 설립 제안과 인증, 창립총회 등에 주도적으로 참여했다. 또한 초대회장을 역임하며 회원 간의 친목도모와 역량강화교육, 지역사회 공헌활동, 각종 심포지엄과 세미나 및 강좌 개최, 국내·외 관련 단체와의 긴밀한 협력관계 구축 등에 힘써왔다. 특히 전북여성건축가회는 전국에서 최초로 설립된 지회이며, 상대적으로 건축업계에서 차별적인 대우를 받던 여성건축가들의 사회적 지위 향상에 기여했다는 점에서 높이 평가받고 있다. 김 회장은 “최근 여성 건축인들이 꾸준히 증가하는 추세임에도 불구하고 건축을 ‘남성의 영역’으로 바라보는 시각 탓에 현장에서의 활동에 많은 제약과 어려움이 있는 것이 사실입니다. 저희는 국내·외적인 정보교류 네트워크를 활성화함으로써 회원들 간의 상호 발전을 도모하고, 이를 폭 넓은 사회활동으로 전환하여 보다 건강한 건축문화를 확립하는 데 앞장서고자 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 

사람을 향한 건축, 후배들의 롤 모델이 되다
전북여성건축가회 활동의 주된 목적 중 하나는 건축 분야에서의 사회활동에 적극 참여함으로써 올바른 건축문화 창달에 기여하는 것이다. 이에 지회에서는 지난 2014년 농촌주거환경개선사업 참여를 시작으로 매년 10월에 개최되는 전북건축문화제에 주최기관으로서 참여하고 있으며, 어린이를 대상으로 한 그리기대회와 백일장을 주관하는 등 미래의 건축 꿈나무를 양성하는 일에도 힘쓰고 있다. 또한 결혼·출산·육아 등으로 인한 경력단절의 문제를 해결하고자 관련 직종에 종사하는 여성전문가들과의 세미나를 통해 대안을 모색하고, 이를 정부정책에 반영할 수 있도록 하는데 힘쓰고 있다. 이처럼 여성 건축가들의 지위 향상에 누구보다 앞장서고 있는 김희순 회장은 이를 실현하기 위해선 무엇보다 먼저 “여성건축가들의 역량 강화”가 우선되어야 한다고 강조한다. 김 회장은 “여성건축가는 남성들보다 섬세하고 감성적인 터치를 더 잘할 수 있는 장점이 있습니다. 최근 건축의 트렌드를 보면 여성이 활약할 수 있는 영역이 점차 늘어나고 있죠. 하지만 이를 효과적으로 수용하기 위해선 먼저 여성건축가들 스스로가 끊임없이 공부하고 노력해서 당당한 실력을 갖춰야만 합니다”라고 강조했다. 지난 2013년 ‘제2회 군산시 건축문화상’ 아름다운 건축물 부문에서 최고상인 금상을 수상하기도 한 그는 이처럼 항상 솔선수범하는 자세로 후배 여성건축가들의 롤 모델이 되고 있다. 또한 아무리 작은 일이라도 최고의 정성과 열정을 다하는 모습은 고객들에게 감동을 주는 건축가의 표본으로 자리매김하고 있다. 다양한 삶의 방식과 수많은 조건들 속에서 ‘좋은 건축’의 절대적인 기준이나 방법은 존재하지 않는다. 다만 진정으로 사람을 위하는 건축, 자연과 어우러지며 아름다움과 편안함을 창출해내는 건축이 있을 뿐이다. 한국 건축의 건강한 미래를 위해 뜨거운 열정을 발산하는 김희순 회장의 앞으로의 행보를 기대한다.

Promoting the rights and interests of women architects in the province
It is relatively a recent phenomenon that the people started to recognize the word ‘architecture’ in Korea. It normally was categorized in the word ‘construction’ and it brought, as a result, all different sorts of buildings jumbled here and there in the cities without order and consideration on harmony between people and environment. Thanks to the improved public recognition today, however, numerous agreeable buildings are being built and also people’s demand for architectural value of a building is soaring. An architect Kim Hee-soon is one of those who contributed to this movement and established The North Jeolla Province Women Architects Association in 2013 for the first time in Korea with the aim to promote the rights and interests of women architects in the province. The association organizes various promotional events including training, community services, symposiums, seminars and exchanges with overseas organizations. “Although the public recognition on architecture has improved much but many of them still have prejudice on women architects which makes us harder to run the business than men. That’s why we gathered together to improve the situation” explains Kim.

North Jeolla Province Women Architects Association participated in a rural housing environment improvement project in 2014 and, as the host, participates in The North Jeolla Province Architecture Exhibition held in October every year. The association also holds a drawing competition and an essay contest for children and provides a help for women on career break as part of its social activities. “The most important job for the association is to raise capabilities of women architects. We can maximize our advantage of sensitivity and delicacy to give meticulousness and lyrical edge to a building alongside our practical knowledge and experience” says Kim. In recognition of her contribution, Kim received the best prize (gold) at The 2nd Gunsan Architecture Awards in 2013. <Power Korea> sends a message of support.
