Introducing an auction house for artistic photographs
Photo Auction (CEO Kwon Ji-hye)
Differentiated O2O photograph services

Since its advent in the 19 century France, photography has developed through daguerreotype, analogue films and digital camera. Today, it is commonly accepted as part of art over its reflection of realism. While the artistic photo market in the world has seen an increase in volume, Korea’s has rather lingered for years despite the fact that about 90% of the people had a camera or two in the 1990s. In this situation, CEO Kwon established Photo Auction last year to trade both home and abroad artistic photos through on/off lines. Kwon says “I and my team had a 5 year preparation period at KIM YOUNG SEOB PHOTOGALLERY and opened Photo Auction with the aim to bridge photographers and domestic collectors. We currently have works of 150 photographers home and abroad with some of them on a contract including Man Ray, Eugene Atget, Bresson, Bill Brandt, Wang Qing song, Hosoe Eiko, Im Ueung-sik, Ju Myeong-duk, Lee Wan-gyo, Gu Bon-chang, Im Young-gyun, Kim Gwang-su, Sung Nam-hoon, Lee Jeong-rok, Lee Hyeok-jun and Kim Gwang-geun.” The good thing about buying a work at Photo Auction is at its broad-spectrum of works and rational price which ranges from KRW 10,000 to 1 million. The vintage print of a work is particularly sought-after as the original negative is printed directly by the photographer during a 5 year period and therefore contains strong impressions of the artist’s intention. Each work can only be printed up to 100 for the value of its scarcity. Kwon continues “In addition to its scarcity value, each work has its own edition number and certificate and is delivered free in a frame.”

Buying easy at a bid, online or ‘open photo market’
You can buy a work at Photo Auction in two ways. Firstly, you can bid a price on the work you wish to buy. A good example is the recent ‘Vintage Print Auction’ held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza on 12 November last year. As Korea’s first ‘rare photograph auction’, the event was held in line with ‘2015 Seoul & New York Photo Festival’ and Man Ray’s ‘Les larmes de verre’ was sold at KRW 19 million. Secondly, you can just visit the site and buy a work in real time that suits your purpose of hanging such as office, hotel, hospital, resort, restaurant, café and home. If you prefer renting a work, you can use the Photo Auction’s monthly rental offer with which you can change the work on a regular basis. In addition, CEO Kwon recently secured a place called ‘open photo market’ in Lim Port Cutlet at Nam Mountain Seoul for exhibiting and selling photo works benefiting the recent increase in number of visitors to the restaurant. Kwon says “Art works are usually displayed and sold at galleries and fairs but I wanted to expand the exhibition places to where we can easily swing by in daily life. So I introduced my slogan ‘Life in Photo, Photo in Life’ in order to realize close communication between artists and the people.” A photo can find a new meaning of the place we usually pass by every day and we often get surprised by its hidden beauty. Even then the communication would never happen if the photo was not in the vicinity of our daily lives. In this respect, CEO Kwon and her team’s passion in making artistic photos one step closer to us is truly a valuable effort.
