Dongnam Business Promotion Support Center suggests ‘win-win strategy’
Introduced in 2011, the government’s Business Promotion Support Center Project has reaped good fruits from many SMEs on improving productivity and quality, increasing sales and export volume and creating jobs. The project aims to help SMEs develop new products, transfer technologies, obtain patents and carry out R&D which they have shown 10% growth in each field respectively. The center is currently run in cities and areas of Banwol, Gumi, Changwon, Gwangju, Wonju, Cheonan and Pangyo and they are showing better performances in sales, export volume and employment rate than any other region. Dongnam Business Promotion Support Center among them is providing support for 43 companies of 5 industrial complexes in Changwon, Ulsan, Busan, Sacheon and Yangsan. Director Min says “We aim to promote the companies in Dongnam (southeast) Industrial Complex to global SMEs through various support programs. We provide information on government funded support projects, find partner companies including major companies for them and give consulting. For example, major companies focus on strengthening capabilities of SMEs andintroducing integrated production and comprehensive distribution systems while partner companies give focus on quality improvement, technology development and human resources. The center also provides services on market analysis, consumer trend and measures to counteract when the market becomes unstable. Min says “We use our ‘consulting framework’ to promote SMEs as ‘cluster-excellence companies’. We find promising businesses and help them share cooperative growth vision through a CEO’s Committee’ and make them stay close.”

MakingSMEs grow with customized support programs
The center’s support programs include ‘company evaluation’, ‘training’, ‘consulting’, ‘technology transfer’, ‘problem-solving skills’ and ‘post management’.Company evaluation especially is focused on strengthening competiveness and finding growth engine through a thorough analysis on the company’s current status. The analysis is carried out by a specialist team and the result is presented with solutions in 8 categories ofproduction, quality, purchase, IT, marketing, financing, R&D and HR based on Mckinsey 7S. The center last March put up a notice and selected 4 additional SMEs through strict screening in April and established ‘3 Year Mid and Long Term Growth Roadmap’ to grow them to strong and competitive mid-sized companies. 13 SEMs are currently being supported by the center: Najae, Duksung Metal, Daegun Tech, Bukuk Precision Industries, Samco, Add Tech, Yunam Tech, Widin, Tongil Industries, Kyunghan Korea, Daeshin Metal, Yulgok and Hyundai Technology Machinery. Min says “We will keep excavating promising regional SMEs and make them grow and go global with our customized support programs.”
