Leads the practical use of Korea’s smart convergence technology
Prof. Lee Joo-yeon, Ajou University New Industrial Convergence Technology Research Center

The ultimate aim of convergence technology is to enrich human life and advance industries. Many countries of the world are making unusual endeavors to converge IT technology with diverse disciplines in order to preoccupy the inexhaustible future market for convergence technologies by creating a new value through it. For this month issue, <Power Korea Monthly> met Prof. Lee Joo-yeon, Ajou University New Industrial Convergence Technology Research Center, to hear his movements for development of Korean smart convergence technology and future prospects.

‘Convergence,’ core keyword for future technology
Convergence technology intended to graft different fields organically is the core keyword for the 21st science and technology because it enables development of innovative technologies of tremendous impact, surmounting the limits of the existing ones. This is why each country of the world is concentrating their efforts on securing convergence-type original technologies as the hub for leading sustainable growth of national economy and industries. Accordingly, Prof. Lee Joo-yeon established Ajou Univ. New Industrial Convergence Technology Research Center taking the lead in developing business models based on the empirical research of smart convergence technology and rearing creative talents who will lead them along.

Prof. Lee said, “Convergence industry market is expected to grow into $61 trillion in 2018. To preoccupy such a gigantic market, we need to cultivate new technologies and make innovations, rather than simply following and copying the existing ones. Our New Industrial Convergence Technology Research Center is going to execute demonstration projects by connecting diverse smart convergence technologies under active research to relevant companies and put them into practice for business models that can create practical values. Besides by connecting them to industrial projects, we will rear talents with expertise and practical abilities for each field with a view to contribute to national development.”

This Research Center established this year is intended to take the lead in activating multidisciplinary convergence research, industry-academy joint research and academy-institute policy research in its role of assuming the control tower to lead the ecosystem of the academic-industrial cooperation. The Center is also planning to enlarge its realm with additional role as a practicality institute for spreading empirical research into practical business, based on which they are dreaming about a global convergence technology institute in 2017.

Professor Lee clarified his plan to lead along the research in connection to the country’s policy direction for creative economy. He told his intention to focus on research projects over four categories, that is, ‘smart grid’ including energy efficiency (FEMS, BEMS), energy storage (ESS), micro-grid, and EV platform; ‘smart factory’ including CPS (Cyber Physical System) simulator and 3D Printer; ‘Smart FinTech’ including NID (National ID Card), FinTech (Smart ID Card) and container control and tracing, and; ‘3D virtual technology including virtual reality and augmented reality. Currently, the Center is carrying out “developing manufacture and engineering service for FEMS,” a core smart-grid technology project, and “ICT engineering design in application of intelligence P2G.” In addition, they are carrying out “support for production based on 3D mixed reality and product management (CPS)” with Korea Electronics Technology Institute.

“Will build a silicon valley with enhanced industry-academy cooperation”
Prof. Lee Joo-yeon, who is working on industrial engineering at this university also an ombudsman under the Ministry of Industry and Trade for industrial convergence, is well known for his productive result after experiencing diverse companies and institutions. He worked for Korea Smart Convergence Institute, POSCO ICT, SKC&C and KMAC, while he was once the youngest officer at ‘Oracle,’ Asia Pacific. After colorful careers on both sides of academy and enterprise, he knows the importance and difficulty of the academy-industry cooperation better than anyone else. Prof. Lee explained, “Establishing organic partnership between university and industry is a critical task for convergence technology research. However, diverse difficulties at the industrial scene and absence of mutual communication, etc. are acting as an obstacle to the industry-academy cooperation. So, while performing information exchange, support for enterprise and joint research through operating a consultative body, we will rear customized creative talents suited for corporate demands by strengthening cooperation with Industrial Graduate School.” Serving as vice president of Ajou Univ. LINC Promotion, he expected that the construction of ecosystem for industry-academy cooperation across Pangyo-Gwanggyo-Dongtan Techno-Valley will act as a Korean silicon valley.

Besides, the Center is also active for building global partnership. Last year, it performed China-site internship successfully with enterprises including SK Hynix, Hyundai Motors, etc., while planning to expand the program each year. The Center is also driving forward exchange for research and personnel with Cangzhou Technical College and Hi-tech Industrial Complex. Prof. Lee clarified, “Our Center is building partnership with the US Silicon Valley to support the advance of leading players in the state’s industrial convergence into the global market while putting our heart and soul into preparing the basis for cooperation with global enterprises such as Google, Apple, Oracle and Tesla. We are also consulting on the research cooperation with Stanford University and San Hose University institutes located at Silicon Valley.”

Last March, the Center signed an MOU with the CEO of Eon Reality, a global enterprise in the areas of future-type VR and AR. Carrying out 3D Mixed Reality-based project, the Center is expected to conduct joint R&D and education for manufacture and medicine using world-class experience-type VR technology owned by Eon Reality through this MOU while planning to cooperate in building Interactive Digital Center in the nation.

Creative innovation and advanced convergence technology based on it is a key to the door to the future. We expect that there will be a just reward for the endeavors of Ajou University New Industrial Convergence Technology Research Center and Prof. Lee Joo-yeon that are devoted to realize the dream of Korea to become a powerhouse in science and technology in the 21st century.
