The hub of smart car R&D
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recently has introduced a Temporary Autonomous Vehicle Permit System which will be applied to limited sections of expressways and national highways. However, we still have a long way to go before those vehicles are fully commercialized in our daily life. Opening of Chungbuk National University Smart Car Research Center, in this respect, is but a welcoming news as it aims to develop the technology and to carry out its performance test at the same time. The head of the center Seok-cheol Kee has worked for a leading conglomerate in Korea for 27 years and is an expert in the field of cutting edge automotive engineering and IT. He says "Our job mainly is to strengthen the R&D in domestic autonomous vehicle technology through private and public projects and industry-academic cooperation. For this, we've built 'Autonomous Vehicle Performance Test Ground' on a 100,000m² land within the university campus and it is the first time in Korea." Kee continues "Unlike highways, the traffic systems in the city center can cause unexpected accidents due to complicated traffic lights and lanes especially in the crossways and the GPS signals interrupted by high buildings can also make smart cars difficult to function. Overcoming this variables is one of the key elements of smart car technology. That's why we built the test ground with similar environment of the city center." Kee benchmarked the The University of Michigan's 'M-City' for the test ground and it is expected to be used as the hub of smart car R&D in the region.
 
Development of prior technology
Future cars, aka smart cars, are expected to realize a total technological innovation over the existing function of shifting men or things from one place to another. So the global competition between the countries to dominate the field in advance is fierce. Chungbuk National University Smart Car Research Center is one of the highly praised centers in Korea for its differentiated R&D methods. Kee has built a total R&D platform for the commercialization of the domestic technology with which he aims to achieve it by 2030 through 'City-Mobility' - urban autonomous minibus - project. Kee sees it as electric vehicles that are run based on certain patterns and they can capacitate indirect demand of densely populated areas of large cities.
 
Kee explains "City-Mobility is a EU government project that has been used in European countries. We will combine the knowhow and technology with our test ground system and we will commercialize the technology within 5 years." Meanwhile, the center is working together with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute with the purpose of fostering specialists in the field. Taking advantage of the network he has built, Kee also has laid a foundation for a national project consortium with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. As for the future plan, Kee is planing to introduce converged degree and graduate courses by early next year. Kee says "We kindly ask your support and encouragement as we are at the beginning stage. But we are equipped with our knowledge, knowhow and passion and are determined to bring good results in near future."
