미래 자동차의 청사진을 그리다
자율주행차 기술 개발의 혁신을 이룰 터
충북대학교 스마트카연구센터 기석철 센터장
한국산업기술진흥원에 따르면 스마트카(Smartcar)란 ‘자동차 기술에 차세대 전기전자, 정보통신, 기능제어 기술을 접목해 자동차의 내·외부 상황을 실시간으로 인식하고, 안전 및 편의 기능을 제공할 수 있는 인간 친화적 자동차’를 말한다. 즉, 자동차에 최신 ICT기술을 접목해 매우 안전하고 편리한 자동차를 생산하는 것이 스마트카의 목적이라 할 수 있다.
지난 2월 충북대학교(윤여표 총장)는 오창캠퍼스 융합기술원에서 ‘스마트카연구센터’ 개원식과 함께 국내 대학 최초로 ‘자율주행 성능시험장’ 기공식을 가지며 미래 자동차인 스마트카 발전을 위해 본격적인 연구개발에 첫 시동을 걸었다.
스마트카 연구개발의 중심허브
최근 국토교통부가 실제 도로 상에서 자율주행차 시범운행을 할 수 있는 임시운행허가제도를 시행했다. 하지만 허용구간은 일부 고속도로 및 국도 구간에 한정돼있다. 이는 다양한 상황에 적합한 자율주행차 개발이 아직 멀었다는 것을 의미하기도 한다.
이와 같은 상황에서 충북대학교 스마트카연구센터(이하 센터) 개원의 의미는 남다르다. 센터는 도심 환경에 적합한 자율주행차 기술 개발을 타겟으로 상용화 기술에서 성능시험에 이르기까지 스마트카 연구의 전주기를 수행할 것으로 기대를 모으고 있다.
기석철 센터장(산학협력단 산학협력중점교수)은 지난 27년간 국내 대기업에 종사하면서 영상인식 분야와 카메라 등의 자동차 첨단 기술 연구를 주도해 온 IT 및 자동차 전장부품에 대한 전문가다. 그는 “스마트카연구센터는 국가 및 민간 등의 과제참여를 통해 R&D 활동을 강화하는 한편, 산학연 공동연구개발 및 상용화 기술 개발 등을 통해 국내 자율주행차 기술 개발의 혁신을 이룰 것입니다”라고 포부를 밝혔다.
이를 가능케 할 센터만의 차별화 전략은 바로 국내 최초로 대학 캠퍼스 내에 기공된 ‘자율주행 성능시험장’에 있다. 기 센터장은 “도심의 경우, 고속도로와 달리 차선 구분이 명확하지 않고 여러 가지 돌발 변수가 생길 수 있습니다. 특히 교차로에서의 복잡한 상황과 보행자와 자동차 간의 충돌 위험성, 고층빌딩으로 인한 위치인식(GPS) 방해요소 등의 수많은 변수를 극복하는 것이 스마트카 기술의 핵심입니다”라고 답했다. 또한 성능시험장에 고층빌딩 가건물, 가상 보행자 조형물 설치 등을 바탕으로 실제 도심과 근접한 환경을 조성해 도심주행에 적합한 자율주행차 기술 개발에 박차를 가할 것이라고 덧붙였다.
미국 미시건대학교 M-City를 벤치마킹해 총 2단계에 걸쳐 약 10만m² 규모로 충북대학교 오창캠퍼스에 조성되는 자율주행 성능시험장은 앞으로 자동차의 성능 평가와 검증, 유관 기관과의 공동 활용을 통해 지역 거점 연구 시설로 사용될 계획이다.
도어 투 도어(door to door)를 위한 선행기술 개발 목표
앞으로의 자동차는 단순히 이동수단의 개념을 넘어 일상의 모든 영역을 연결시켜주는 융합기술의 총집합체가 될 것으로 전망된다. 따라서 미래 자동차의 주역은 스마트카이며, 전 세계적으로 스마트카 관련 상용화 기술 연구개발에 대한 각축전이 벌어지고 있다. 충북대학교 스마트카연구센터와 국내 최초의 자율주행 성능시험장은 기존 자율주행차 연구 개발의 차별화를 시도하며 그 자체만으로 남다른 경쟁력과 가치를 지닌 것으로 평가받고 있다.
기석철 센터장은 기술 개발에 국한하지 않고 상용화 모델에 대한 전체적인 플랫폼을 구축했다. 그는 자율주행차의 완성을 2030년 이후로 내다보고 있으며, 이를 뒷받침할 센터의 도전과제로 ‘도심형 자율주행 미니버스(City-Mobility)’를 예로 들었다. City-Mobility은 대도시의 인구집중 현상으로 인한 간접수요를 충족시킬 초기 상용화 모델로 일정한 패턴을 가지고 공공지역을 운행하는 전기차이다. 기 센터장은 “City-Mobility은 이미 유럽에서는 EU 정부 프로젝트로 진행되었던 사례이기도 합니다. 센터의 연구역량과 자율주행 성능시험장의 조합을 적극 활용해 향후 5년 내에 상용화 기술을 확보할 것입니다”라고 말하며 향후 이를 중심으로 한 후속 산업 활성화에도 기여할 수 있을 것이라 조언했다.
한편 센터는 인접해 있는 유관기관(한국전자통신연구원, 자동차부품연구원 등)과의 연계를 통한 긴밀한 협업과 인재양성 계획도 적극 추진 중에 있다. 산학협력중점교수로 임용된 기석철 센터장의 대외협력 인프라를 바탕으로 현재 미래부 및 산업부의 국가과제를 수행할 컨소시엄을 구축했으며, 내년 상반기에 스마트카 관련 융합학과 및 대학원 교과과정 개설을 목표로 적극적인 검토가 이뤄지고 있다.
끝으로 기석철 센터장은 “스마트카연구센터가 이제 시작인만큼 앞으로도 지속적인 관심과 격려를 부탁드립니다”라고 당부하며 성공적인 연구 성과로 보답할 것이라 강조했다. 미래 신성장 산업을 견인할 충북대학교 스마트카연구센터의 행보가 국내 자율주행차 기술 개발의 진일보를 이룰 수 있길 희망한다.

The hub of smart car R&D
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recently has introduced a Temporary Autonomous Vehicle Permit System which will be applied to limited sections of expressways and national highways. However, we still have a long way to go before those vehicles are fully commercialized in our daily life. Opening of Chungbuk National University Smart Car Research Center, in this respect, is but a welcoming news as it aims to develop the technology and to carry out its performance test at the same time. The head of the center Seok-cheol Kee has worked for a leading conglomerate in Korea for 27 years and is an expert in the field of cutting edge automotive engineering and IT. He says "Our job mainly is to strengthen the R&D in domestic autonomous vehicle technology through private and public projects and industry-academic cooperation. For this, we've built 'Autonomous Vehicle Performance Test Ground' on a 100,000m² land within the university campus and it is the first time in Korea." Kee continues "Unlike highways, the traffic systems in the city center can cause unexpected accidents due to complicated traffic lights and lanes especially in the crossways and the GPS signals interrupted by high buildings can also make smart cars difficult to function. Overcoming this variables is one of the key elements of smart car technology. That's why we built the test ground with similar environment of the city center." Kee benchmarked the The University of Michigan's 'M-City' for the test ground and it is expected to be used as the hub of smart car R&D in the region.
Development of prior technology
Future cars, aka smart cars, are expected to realize a total technological innovation over the existing function of shifting men or things from one place to another. So the global competition between the countries to dominate the field in advance is fierce. Chungbuk National University Smart Car Research Center is one of the highly praised centers in Korea for its differentiated R&D methods. Kee has built a total R&D platform for the commercialization of the domestic technology with which he aims to achieve it by 2030 through 'City-Mobility' - urban autonomous minibus - project. Kee sees it as electric vehicles that are run based on certain patterns and they can capacitate indirect demand of densely populated areas of large cities.
Kee explains "City-Mobility is a EU government project that has been used in European countries. We will combine the knowhow and technology with our test ground system and we will commercialize the technology within 5 years." Meanwhile, the center is working together with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, and the Korea Automotive Technology Institute with the purpose of fostering specialists in the field. Taking advantage of the network he has built, Kee also has laid a foundation for a national project consortium with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. As for the future plan, Kee is planing to introduce converged degree and graduate courses by early next year. Kee says "We kindly ask your support and encouragement as we are at the beginning stage. But we are equipped with our knowledge, knowhow and passion and are determined to bring good results in near future."
