The bas relief face inspired by ID pictures
"I focus on the fact that we see our inside better with closed eyes“
Sculptor Jang Jun-hyouk

Rediscovery of face relief buried in a solemn undertone of coins and medal masks
Jang used to create works by hammering metal plates before using clay. Jang's intention through this change was to save physical energy and to create a face in a quadrangular frame. But reducing the movement by saving the physical energy does not necessarily mean that Jang's thoughts as creator has been idle. To deliver his new ideas and intentions, Jang chose 'bas relief face'. Face expresses one's identity and inner feelings. Unlike a powerful man's solemn face on ancient coins, Jang gives realistic features of a face in a quadrangular frame. Jang only gives one alphabet (P, M, B, etc.) for each of his monotone face (bas-relief) and distinguishes the age and sex of each face with wrinkles and curves and sometimes hide part of the face with hand. This details of the face give us a feeling that the face is in a state of suspended animation or contemplation. The hand that hide part of the face seem to be a device to express the emotion. Jang explains "All my intention resides in the relief itself and the alphabet. I think that we see our inside better with closed eyes. One might think that I give more effort in shaping the face but I do more in drawing out one's inner psychological state. For this reason, the viewers can share the various emotions of the face such as joy, sadness, etc. The moment when facing the front face in stillness, the viewers are given a right to examine one's life through physiognomy."

The meaning in one alphabet and its interpretation
Jang gets inspiration from daily face photos online or his acquaintances and combines each part of them to make a one creative face. Through this process, Jang maximizes the symbolism of the face. Jang said that his view on family portrait had become wider through the events of marriage, having a baby and marriage life. For this reason, each alphabet he gives to each of his work symbolizes a certain meaning or two. P, for example, can mean the initial letter of pierrot or a related adjective, verb and predicate. A sad faced pierrot suppose to express only joy and pleasure and it might be a symbolic face of many modern fathers, while the letter 'M' might mean 'mother' or 'master' according to Jang. He continues "I basically create faces with closed eyes. But the recent work with one eye open and hand covering the mouth indicates one's desires that have been blocked by his surrounding environments and conditions. I'm also open for the materials I use for my future works as I have many ideas in my head." Meanwhile, Jang's second solo exhibition 'Surface' was held from 20 February and 3 March and he displayed 7 of his works. Jang says "This exhibition was meaningful for me as I only displayed a few of my works in various exchange exhibitions and festivals. People have more accessability to sculptures today as they are standing in many public and even residential areas. And I wish to take part in delivering the beauty of sculpture, bas relief face in my case, to more people."
