큐브에 대한 관념적인 투시도를 지향한 Le Cube 시리즈
“모든 사물의 시작인 ‘큐브’에서 파생될 것들을 상상한 평면에서의 입체적 구현”

한쪽 면에서 보면 타일과 같은 픽셀의 모음, 돌려 보면 정육각면체 27개로 이루어진 큐브는 평면과 입체가 공존하여 흥미를 자아내는 3차원 성향의 물체다. 이 물체에 대해 애정과 호기심을 가진 사람들은 비단 건축학자와 수학자 집단만은 아닐 것이다. 큐비즘으로 파생된 미술사적 관심도에서 큐브 그 자체에 대한 탐구로 논점을 옮긴 화가 윤경림 작가처럼 말이다. 

모든 사물과 공간은 작은 큐브에서 오고, 나는 이 큐브를 차용하여 세계관을 만든다
화가는 붓과 물감을 무기 삼아 캔버스라는 공간에 발을 딛고 선다. 그런데 이런 거시적인 관점에서 그림을 생각하는 작가들과 달리, 윤경림 작가의 그림은 ‘큐브’를 탐구하는 방법론에서 시작된다. 12개의 선으로 된 정육면체, 그리고 이 6면체가 따로 또 같이 존재하는 큐브는 인체와 사물을 원근과 단축, 모델링 기법으로 분해 재구성하는 큐비즘과는 접근법에서 차이가 있다. 윤 작가는 작가노트에서 큐브를 일컬어 “모든 사물과 공간이 시작되는 곳”이라고 한다. 아무리 큰 화소와 화면이라 할지라도 구성하는 단위가 결국 하나하나의 픽셀이듯, 작은 공간의 폭발적 증식으로 세계관을 설명하는 천문학이나 생물학처럼 미술에서도 작은 범위로 더 큰 영역을 표현하는 시작, 일명 ‘점 찍기’가 있게 마련이다. 그러므로 캔버스 안의 프레임에서 첫점, 첫선을 긋기 위해 붓을 드는 화가들과 달리, 윤 작가는 작은 한 개의 큐브에서 증식하는 독창적인 ‘빅뱅 세계관’으로 평면에서 3차원을 구사할 뿐 아니라, 추상적인 회화에서 독자적이고 비평적인 자기표현과 성찰을 전할 수 있게 되었다. 사실주의 기법을 떠나 추상적인 작품으로 진행할 때, 자연과 인간을 잇는 하나의 단서를 찾기 위해 예술가들은 노력한다.

대학에서 시각디자인을, 대학원에서 회화를 전공한 윤 작가의 경우는 양자를 잘 조화한 그 성찰의 결실로 연작 <Le Cube>를 선보이고 있다. “2009년부터 큐브를 소재로 삼았다. 나는 도시주택의 대명사가 한옥이 아니라 아파트로 인식되기 시작하던 시대를 살았다. 그래서 작품 또한 공간, ‘라이프드림’에 대한 거시적인 탐색에서 시작하곤 했다. 자신이 지내온 환경이 작품에 영향을 준다는 관점에도 동의한다. 또한 컴퓨터공학을 전공한 남편과 함께 지내면서 디지털 작업에 친숙하다 보니 평면에서 3D로 스케치작업을 하고 포토샵을 활용하여 작품을 구상하는데, 근본 영역은 회화이다 보니 중간 과정에서의 여러 돌발 변수를 받아들이고 있다.”

설치응용미술과 회화를 오가는 단 하나의 단서, 큐브
캔버스에 나타나는 큐브는 평면에 입체를 그리는 것이기에, 윤 작가는 큐브를 표현하고자 채색과정에서 보다 입체적인 조형적 요소를 결합한다. 거기에는 캔버스에 선으로 된 큐브를 그리는 것 이상의 의미가 있다. 큐브는 쌓으면 높이와 양감을 이루고, 원근을 표현하면 작은 프레임에서도 눈의 착각에 따라 얼마든지 무한한 깊이의 공간을 만들어 낸다. 그래서 윤 작가는 스페이스적인 요소를 염두에 두고, 별처럼 많은 큐브를 안에 넣기도 한다. “큐브의 장점은 상상력과 사고의 폭을 넓힌다는 것이다. 선들로 이뤄진 프레임 6개가 모인 입체 형태이기에 뒤집거나 돌리건 간에 어느 방향이나 공간에서도 해석이 가능하다.” 평면에 입체를 만드는 큐브의 속성과 윤 작가의 삶은 유난히 닮은 구석이 많다. “작품 활동과 공부를 하고 싶은 만큼 했다. 직장생활과 지역사회를 위한 교육, 대학 강단에도 올랐고 아이를 낳아 길렀다. 대학졸업 19년 만에 다시 공부하여 석사학위도 받았다. 내 인생은 그림과 삶이라는 공간 안에서 잘 짜여 돌아가고 있었고 큐브로 생각할 수 있는 아이디어, 큐브에 담을 수 있는 꿈 또한 여전히 무한하다.” 그래서 윤 작가는 작품을 구상하는 습작들조차도 조형예술의 일부로 승화하고 있다. “그림을 전시할 때는 재미있는 설치 작업을 병행한다. 그림 속에 나타나는 큐브의 이미지를 실제로 건축모형만들기의 재료인 우드를 커팅해서 큐브 형태를 만들어 화면에서 공간으로 끄집어내기도 한다. 또 작품의 부산물로 만들어진 테이핑으로 큐브 형태를 만들어 겹겹이 원근에 맞게 붙여보기도 한다. 그냥 입방체로 만드는 것보다는 훨씬 입체적으로 보이는 효과가 있다.” 전시회장에는 그림의 색감에 최적화된 조명이 있게 마련인데, 윤 작가는 그 조명에서 발생하는 그림자를 평면 속 입체로 보이게 만드는 하나의 장치로 사용한다고 덧붙인다. 그 곳에서 2D인 그림이 3D로 편입되는 과정은 시종일관 흥미롭다.

평면에 중첩된 패턴들이 쌓이는 입체적 효과를 위해, 정해진 톤을 하나의 공간으로 설정하여 여러 번 칠하고, 배경과 피사체를 만든 뒤 큐브를 표현할 선을 테이핑하는 과정을 거치는 윤 작가의 기법은 마치 컴퓨터의 화면보호기처럼 보는 이의 시선을 공간의 소실점으로 끝없이 빨아들인다. 그래서 윤 작가는 당분간 큐브로 작품을 계속하라는 권유에도 긍정적이다. “관객들은 그림과 입체적인 패턴을 함께 볼 수 있는 것에 흥미로워하시죠, 나 역시 레이아웃과 색, 구성을 미리 포토샵으로 에스키스를 해두지만 제작과정에서 여러 가지 시도에 의해 원안과 달라지는 과정에서 즐거움을 느낍니다. 또한 작품에 맞게 색을 매칭, 배합하고 직접 만들어 적용하기 때문에 이 큐비즘은 미술사에 기록된 큐비즘이라기보다는 말 그대로 큐브라는 소재를 측량하는 일종의 독창적인 접근법이기도 합니다” 아울러 윤 작가는 “이러한 작업이 쌓여 가면서 나를 설명하는 화풍의 중요한 소재가 된 큐브는, 제작에 많은 시간이 걸리며 다루기 어려운 만큼 한편으로는 작가로서의 성취감과 보람을 갖게도 해 준다”고 설명한다. 윤 작가는 또한 큐브의 특징이자 매력인 무한함의 속성에 대해, 새로운 세계에 대한 도전이라고 부연하며 이 작품을 통해 그 의미를 찾을 수 있다면 기쁠 것이라고 덧붙였다. 세계적인 아트페어전인 <어퍼 더블 홍콩>에 출품 경력이 있는 윤 작가는 2016년 6월 개최될 <어퍼 더블 런던>에 출품할 8개의 큐브 연작 세트를 준비 중이다. 이후에는 파리로 넘어가 전시회와 작업을 겸한 뒤 12월에는 해금강미술관에서 [큐브를 만나다]라는 주제로 초대개인전을 가질 것이다. 다분히 측량적인 관점에서 출발해 높은 상상력과 색감, 공간감으로 완성해 낸 윤 작가의 작품들이 앞으로도 열린 세계관을 가진 많은 미술팬들의 공감을 얻을 수 있길 바란다.

Le Cube Series aims to realize ideal three-dimensional pictures
From cube to realizing imaginative 3D

"All things come from a small cube and the cube creates a view of the world"
Many painters draw a picture on a canvas with brushes and paints. But Yoon starts her work from her own study on cubes. A cube has 2 sides and 12 lines but Yoon's cubes are different from cubism in the way of reconstruction, modeling and distance. Yoon calls these cubes as the beginning of all things and space. No matter how big a screen is, it is consisted of tiny pixels and these dots are expanding to make things bigger and bigger. While many painters do not give much attention to these dots for lines and figures, Yoon gets inspiration from the big bang theory and focus on realizing these cubes in three-dimensional picture through unique expression. Many abstract artists try to find a clue to connect nature to human beings. And Yoon put these two elements together in harmony in her work Le Cube Series. She says "I majored in visual design and finished a master's course in painting. I started to use cubes as my main subject from 2009. As apartments were recognized for common residence in cities, I naturally had an interest in space and about the dream of city dwellers. Then I started to express this interest by combining painting and three dimensional sketches into a work." 

Cubes connect paintings and applied-installation 
As Yoon creates cubes on a flat canvas, she naturally gives more efforts to three dimensional elements over colouring. And there is something more than just drawing cubes itself in this creative process. Cubes give a sense of height and volume when piled up and create limitless space in depth when applied with distance. Yoon puts millions of cubes into the space of a canvas. One of the advantages of cubes is that they widen the range of our ideas and imaginations whichever direction we are seeing them. Interestingly, this process of putting cubes on a canvas resembles Yoon's life. She says "I studied a lot and worked a lot. I once taught students at university and enjoyed my life as a mother. And I finished a master's degree after 19 years of obtaining a degree. I kept a good balance between my life and work and I still have limitless ideas about cubes." Yoon continues "I add an installation to my paintings in exhibition. I make a model of the cubes on a canvas with wood and pull out the model from the screen. I also make a model by taping and sticks it layer on layer according to distance. This process makes the cubes look more three dimensional. In terms of lighting, I use it to make shadows of the cubes as a way of creating three dimensional images on a 2 dimensional canvas."

Yoon establishes a space with a single tone, paints it several times, makes a background and the object, goes through taping process that expresses the line of the cubes, in order to create a three-dimensional effect. We cannot help but absorbed into the vanishing point when seeing this work in real. She says "People get excited when seeing the picture and 3D patterns at the same time. I also enjoy the changes and unexpectedness of my work during the creating process. I decide the composition of colour and layout with Photoshop but make the colour and its mix with my hands to create unique style and approaching." Yoon added "Creating cubes on a canvas actually takes a lot of time and effort. But having a sense of accomplishment is much greater when completed." Meanwhile, Yoon participated in the Affordable Art Fair Hongkong before and is preparing to display her 8 Cube Series at the Affordable Art Fair London in June this year. After that, she is scheduled to have a work and exhibition in Paris and an invitation exhibition titled 'Meeting With Cubes' at Haegeumgang Gallery in December in Korea.
