"Contents are more important than platforms to survive the competition"

SKonec Entertainment CEO Hwang Dae-sil has 25 years experience in the game industry and has led SKonec Entertainment for the last 15 years. He jumped into the game industry when he was working part time in Japan. He then started to work with game companies such as Nintendo, Sega, Taitou and Alpha System and dominated the market with game softwares optimized for arcade and consoles. In the age of online game and console based game, he sold 200,000 copies of Nintendo DS's Mabup Chunjamun DS (10% of total supply). When Nintendo changed to Wii and smartphone games were in full swing, he released Kakao's 'Bogeul Bogeul' and Wii Soft's 'K-Pop Dance Festival'. While most domestic game companies shifted to smartphone based games, he was preparing Korean style VR contents which require high technologies. Hwang then signed a partnership with Oculus and introduced 'Probe System' in 2014 centered on the game users rather than the designers, and released the first Korean style VR gun shooting game 'Mortal Blitz VR' loaded with SK Kit and sensing technology. VR market is estimated to be worth USD $70 billion thanks to convergence of game, home appliances and electronic equipment industries. And buying a software and a hardware player separately can be an alternative for this new market.

"Game is a part of contents that VR can provide“

Hwang used his knowhow, accumulated through his long career in the field, and software application technology contents that can improve the problems occurring when connecting to Head Mounted Displays, to create Mortal Blitz VR. He focused on real feeling, perfection sensing VR attraction and display, and device itself. Many people praise him for improving Korean sensing technology and hardware. He was also praised from global game and digital UI specialized reporters for opening fire on VR contents at 2015 Mobile World Congress in which Samsung and Oculus together released 'Gear VR'. Hwang says "Many companies are involved in making VR equipment. But VR platform is not a concept but display and device are more important and this field is dominated by the US and Europe. Therefore, we need to make converging devices and technologies that can control hardware, and the contents that can work with them. VR is like a recipe market. It means that there are ingredients provided but we haven't cooked much yet. If we make a new dish, we become the initiators of the dish." Hwang's recipe is combination of HMD and simulators. He continues "There will be a fierce battle between Oculus and Sony's PlayStation over VR contents in 2016. They need to pay attention to ever developing sensing technologies and wearable devices to meet the customers' wants and needs in the VR market. People watch TV programmes made by PD but VR is the other way round. So, they need to understand the used-centered hardware concept."

Leading the global VR market with effective collaboration

Hwang says "We are the existence who can endure today's pain for tomorrow's dream." When many console-based companies took downturn in 2013, Hwang brought an idea of VR contents with improved functions. Currently, Hwang is planning to apply his knowhow in VR to education, architecture, industry and commercials. He says "While I was developing the contents, I even thought of adding semi-time machine functions. This means that a customer in Korea feels that he is shopping in a shopping mall in the US over time and space. He might even participate in the Battle of Myeongnyang." Hwang's SKonec Entertainment has begun developing a VR game 'Idol Universe' in cooperation with Coca Cola and a large entertainment company to pioneer the VR contents in the commercial and cultural industries. Hwang added "If we develop technology that can reduce the clash between the resolution and the device, we might be able to experience various different jobs, life and environment in our life time. We might not even need to work from 9 to 5 in an office but in a VR instead in the future." Power Korea wishes Hwang and SKonec Entertainment a prosperous 2016.
