인간은 자연으로부터 벗어나서는 살아갈 수 없다. 지금까지의 건축은 서구적인 논리, 즉 노동생산적인 가치로서의 논리에 의해 사고되어왔다. 그러나 환경에 대한 관심이 높아지고, 자연과 어우러짐으로써 인간의 삶의 질을 높이고자 하는 경향이 증가하며 자연과 환경, 인간이 독립된 개체가 아닌 상호 의존적 존재라는 인식이 점차 확대되고 있다.

환경과 사람 중시한 건축으로 AIA 아너상 수상

지난해 11월, 서울과학기술대학교 건축학부 남정민 교수가 미국 건축사협회(AIA)에서 주관하는 ‘2015 AIA 국제 디자인 시상식’에서 건축분야 최고상인 아너 상(Honor Award)을 수상했다. 수상작인 서울시 서초구 우면동 유치원 프로젝트 ‘꽃+유치원’은 사용자인 어린이들이 좀 더 자유롭게 사고하고 활용할 수 있도록 돕는 공간구성과 햇빛, 바람, 꽃과 나무 등의 자연요소와 잘 어우러지도록 배려했다는 점에서 높은 평가를 받았다. 한정된 부지를 활용하기 위해 옥상정원과 건물 입면의 녹화 적용 등 아이들이 식물이나 자연을 직접 접할 수 있도록 한 것도 특징이다. ‘꽃+유치원’ 프로젝트에 의해 완공 이후 2학기 째 운영되고 있는 예원유치원은 층별, 교실별로 차별화된 색깔 구성과 세련된 외부디자인 등 지역 주민들의 이목을 집중시키며 아이들과 학부모들로부터도 높은 호응을 받고 있다.

이번 수상을 통해 친환경적이면서도 미래지향적인 건축 디자인의 방향을 제시한 남정민 교수는 美 하버드대에서 건축설계학을 공부하고 해외 건축사사무소에서 기량을 다지며 세계적 건축 문화의 안목을 넓혀온 인물이다. 또한 서울과기대 건축학전공의 교수로 부임한 이후 글로벌 역량을 갖춘 건축 인재 육성에 주력하며 국내 건축 산업 발전의 견인차 역할을 해왔다.

남 교수는 건축에 있어서 우선되어야 할 것은 ‘사용자’라고 이야기한다. 남 교수는 “우리 주변에서 이뤄지는 건축의 대부분은 경제적 이유나 건축 재료상의 문제, 법적인 규제 등의 현실적 여건에 맞춰 이뤄지는 경우가 많습니다. 하지만 무엇보다 중요시되어야 할 것은 실제 사용하는 사람이 공간을 얼마나 더 효과적으로 영위할 수 있는지를 최대한 반영하는 것이라 생각합니다”라고 밝혔다. 이에 덧붙여 남 교수는 주변의 자연환경을 건축물에서 느낄 수 있는 구조, 즉 아날로그적인 친환경을 건축물에 반영하는 것이 현대의 건축이 더 나은 방향으로 나아갈 수 있는 길이라 역설했다.

인식의 변화가 대한민국 건축의 도약 이끌 것

인간과 자연의 조화를 중시하는 남정민 교수의 건축철학은 그의 경험에 기초한 부분이 크다. 그는 많은 현대인들이 자연과 괴리된 삭막한 도시환경에서 살아가면서 놓치게 된 가치들이 많다고 지적했다. 최신 건축기술과 트렌드는 도시에서도 충분히 자연을 접할 수 있도록 배려하는 방향으로 나아가고 있지만, 국내 도시계획의 실상은 그렇지 못하고 있다는 것이다.

이에 남 교수는 자연·인간·건물의 유기적 공존이 가능한 건축 모듈 개발에 매진하고 있다. 최근 한국과 미국에서 특허를 출원한 콘크리트 블록(리빙블록)을 개발한 것이 그 대표적인 예라 할 수 있다. 이 블록은 벽의 파티션이나 외피가 되는 기본적인 기능 외에도 식물을 식재함으로써 화분 군락이나 의자, 벽 등을 구성할 수 있는 다목적 블록으로서, 일반적인 건축자재로 사용 가능하면서도 그 이상의 기능을 보여줄 수 있다는 점에서 그 활용도가 높다고 밝혔다.

남 교수가 이끌고 있는 건축디자인연구소 ‘OA-Lab’ 또한 이러한 방향성에 집중하고 있다. 그는 실험적인 디자인 연구와 실무에서의 현실적용을 균형 있는 시각으로 잡아내며, 건축물이 우리 일상 속에서의 삶의 경험을 담아낼 수 있는 방향으로 나아갈 수 있도록 노력하고 있다고 밝혔다. 주변 환경과 사용자를 고려한 디자인, 형태와 재료에 대한 연구가 바탕이 된 건축이 한국 건축에 혁신이나 변화를 가져올 수 있다는 것이다. 실무 현장에서는 여건 상 소홀해질 수밖에 없는 디자인 연구를 수행하고, 이를 현장에서 실질적으로 적용할 수 있는 인재를 길러내고자 하는 것이 OA-Lab의 목표이다.

서울시 공공건축가로서 주민공공시설 프로젝트에 참가하고, 서울시 해방촌 도시재생사업의 도시건축자문계획가로도 활동 중인 남 교수는 한국 건축의 발전을 위해서는 ‘문화로서의 건축’을 바라볼 수 있는 자세가 필요하다고 강조했다. 그는 “현재 국내 건축은 경제적인 측면만을 강조한 나머지 건축가의 역할이나 디자인의 중요성, 인프라스트럭처의 필요성이 소홀히 다뤄지고 있는 것이 사실”이라며, “사회 뿐 아니라 건축가 스스로도 이러한 한계와 장애를 극복하기 위한 노력이 동반되어야 합니다”라고 밝혔다. 학생들에게도 비전과 집중, 디테일을 강조하며 기본에 충실한 건축, 사용자를 위한 건축, 도시환경을 긍정적으로 개선하는 데 보탬이 되는 건축을 선도하고 싶다는 남정민 교수. 그가 펼쳐낼 대한민국 건축의 새로운 패러다임이 어떠한 방향으로 나아가게 될지 앞으로의 행보를 기대해보자.

Winning Honor Award with environment and people-centered architecture

Last November, Prof. Nam Jeong-min at KAIST won Honor Award at 2015 AIA International Design Awards' in the architecture category held by AIA (American Institute of Architects). The winning work is a project called 'Flower + Kindergarten'. As part of the project, Yeawon Kindergarten was built in Umyeong-dong, Seocho District, Seoul. Nam realized a helpful space composition in harmony with sunlight, wind, flowers and trees around the building. He applied rooftop garden and greens to facade so that children can directly communicate with nature. Nam also applied different colours and exterior to each floor and class of the kindergarten which has been run for 2 years. Prof. Nam studied architectural design at Harvard University and worked for overseas architecture firms. He currently is an architecture professor at KAIST and is fostering globally talented students in the field. Nam says "Thinking about who will use the building and on what purpose is most important in architecture. But most buildings around us are rather designed and built based on the budget and legal boundary. I personally think that modern architecture should pursue eco-friendliness. This is because the closer we are to nature the better living environment we can feel and create.“

"Changing social attitudes will shift Korean architecture to a different level“

Nam pointed out that the contemporary architecture seemed to pursue eco-friendliness but Korea's urban planning seemed to go the other way. To improve the situation, Nam has been working on developing an architectural module that can make nature, people and buildings coexist in harmony. As a result, he developed the US patented Concrete Block (Living Block). As the name suggests, we can set out plants on this block in addition to its original functions for building walls or making partitions. Nam's OA-Lab (architectural design institute) also is focusing on the harmony and balance between nature and people for each project through customized design and appropriate materials. OA-Lab's continuous R&D and fostering talented manpower equipped with field experience, in this respect, will contribute to bringing changes in social attitudes of the people. And through this, Korean architecture will be shifted to a different level, according to Nam. Meanwhile, Nam is serving as a public architect, and has participated in numerous public institution projects, and as an urban building advisor for Seoul Haebangchon Urban Renewal Projects. Nam says "In order for Korean architecture to make a step forward, we need to see architecture as part of culture over just focusing on the budget, efficiency and speed which often resulted in poor design and materials. So the first step we need to take is to change our social attitudes first." Nam added that he, and his staff, would do his best to create a better and eco-friendly buildings in Korea.
