붉은색을 사랑하는 중국인들이 더 큰 감동을 받은 푸른색. 흰 화병을 감싼 푸른 용이 새겨진 데이비드화병은 대영박물관 중국자기관에서 세계 도자기 전문가들의 사랑을 받고 있다.

그런데 이 데이비드화병과 한날한시에 태어난 쌍둥이 화병들이 한국에 있어 화제다. 이들을 소장중인 행정법무연구원 민종기 원장을 만나 중국의 수백 년 전 보물을 알아본 비결, 세계 문화의 이목을 끌 데이비드화병 한 쌍의 가치에 대해 점검해 보았다.

오랜 행정생활과 역사발굴취미가 합쳐져 세계적 보물의 가치 입증

36년간의 공직생활을 하면서 장성군청과 전남도청에서 도시개발, 환경정책, 에너지, 사회복지, 법무당당관 등 다양한 실무과장을 거치고 고향인 화순에서 부군수와 군수권한대행을 역임한 다음 광주 법원 앞에서 행정법무연구원을 개원한 민종기 원장에게는 ‘고미술품 전문 수집가’라는 별명이 있다.

전남도청에서 공무원교육원 교육법 교관과 행정심판, 행정소송 업무담당으로 얻은 행정에 관한 법률과 실무경험을 시․도민들에게 환원하며 역량을 인정받는 민 원장은 1993년 장성군 문화관광과장을 계기로 많은 고문화관계자들을 접하게 되었다고 한다.

우암 송시열, 민영환 선생, 암행어사 이건창, 순국지사 송병선의 친필 글씨를 처음 수집, 해독하며 조선시대의 행정과 풍속에 대한 고문서 ‘ 간찰 등을 약 6천여 점 수집하던 그는, 한국인 최초로 중국유물발굴 전문가이자 중국정부로부터 중국10대 문화명인에 선정된 김희용 선생을 12년 전에 만나 관심 분야를 중국 고대유물로 확대하게 된다.

철저한 행정전문가이기도 한 민 원장은 수많은 중국도자기들에 대해 중국과 한국의 전문가들을 찾아다니고 스스로 출토 도자기의 특징을 터득하며 감정능력을 키워왔다. 그러던 중, 국내 최초로 소장중인 중국고대도자기를 선별하여 공립박물관에 전시하기 위해 공식감정을 감정 받는 과정에서 우연히 많은 전문가들이 더 이상의 명품은 없을 것이라 단정한 영국 데이비드화병과 같은 한 쌍의 원청화를 발견한 것이다.

고흥군청 주관 하에 홍산문화중국도자기박물관 김희일 관장과 함께 중국인민대학박물관 학회이사 허명 교수, 상해 공뢰관리전문학원 문물감정학과 진일민 교수를 초청하여 지난해 말 320점을 감정하여 290점의 진품판정을 받았는데 그 가운데 놀랍게도 특품 데이비드 화병이 숨어 있었던 것. 대영박물관의 꽃이자 수만 개 원청화도자기 중 최고로 꼽히는 데이비드화병과 발색, 그림, 형태, 유약, 적혀진 62자의 기복기원 및 제작연도까지 똑같은 쌍둥이 화병이라는 판정을 받은 순간이었다. 보석감정 및 중국도자전문가인 조선이공대학교 귀금속보석과 명예교수 김영석공학박사는 이 소식을 전해 듣고 중국도자기를 공부하는 사람은 누구나 꿈에서도 명품청화자기를 보는 것이 소망이다. 중국에서도 볼 수없는 데이비드 화병이 한국에서 발견되었다는 것은 문화국가의 품격을 높이는 대경사라며 기뻐했다고 한다.

저명한 중국학자를 감동시킨 더 선명한 색상과 완벽한 아름다움

고흥군수와 김 관장 그리고 민 원장을 더욱 즐겁게 한 것은 영국의 펄서벌 데이비드 경의 데이비드화병보다 한국의 데이비드화병이 더 선명한 코발트색 문양을 지녔다는 것이다. 양쪽의 코끼리 코고리까지 원형보존이 된 흠 없는 한 쌍의 청화자기, 그리고 중국본토에서 결코 찾을 수 없는 원본화병이라는 사실을 강조한 원청화 감정권위자 허명 교수는 12월 28일 감정한 320점의 전체가치를 다 합쳐도 이 데이비드화병의 가치를 따를 수 없다며 격찬했다.

그는 “700년이라는 세월 동안 중국 원대청화유물이 최상의 보존 상태를 유지하고 있다는 것은 한국과 중국을 넘어 세계의 자랑이 될 것”이라며 그동안 5회가 넘게 현지로 달려가 확인한 영국의 데이비드화병과 완벽하게 같은 진품이라는 문서를 작성했다.

고흥군수와 민원장은 중국 거부들에게 소개하면 이 화병에 1천억 원 이상도 기꺼이 지불할 것이라는 허명 교수의 제안을 마다하고, 데이비드화병을 문화적 관심을 촉발시키는 계기로 삼고자 하는 뜻을 전했다. 나아가 “세계 문화재 광들을 불러모아 관광대국이 된 영국처럼 언젠가는 한국에서도 세계적 보물을 소개할 수 있는 꿈을 꾸어 왔다. 행운도 준비하는 사람에게 오는 법이라며 10여년 전 중국의 도자기들이 유랑하며 국내로 흘러들어올 때, 수년간 김희용 선생으로부터 익힌 도자지식이 있었기에 명품을 한눈에 알아보고 화병을 구입할 수 있었다”고 한다.

그는 그동안 수집해 온 데이비드화병을 비롯한 중국고대 도자기들이 개인소장보다는 국가 유물로 쓰이길 바라는 마음에서 현재는 고흥군에 임시 기탁해놓은 상태이고, 420억 규모의 박물관이 지어지는 대로 지역향토유물인 덤벙분청사기들과 함께 한중 관광객 및 세계인의 관심을 끄는 특별한 보물창고가 되기를 기대하고 있다.

영국처럼 한국도 데이비드화병의 가치로 세계 문화계에 어필할 수 있다

영국의 데이비드화병은 공식 명칭이 대유덕기금회상이병으로서 1929년 당시에도 오늘날처럼 중국 골동상들이 ‘원대엔 청화자기가 존재하지 않는다’며 가짜 취급한 바람에 오뢰회라는 상인을 통해 영국으로 흘러 들어갔고 영국의 데이비드 관장 손에 넘어가서야 비로소 가치를 인정받은 바 있다. 이런 사연을 배경으로 외관의 아름다움, 글과 그림의 조화가 푸른 발색과 함께 큰 사랑을 받으며 세계 청화백자의 여왕으로 등극한 것이다. 이러한 청화백자의 존재가치를 그대로 지니고 있는데다가 한국내에서도 오랜동안 명품청화 출현의 소망이 간절하였기에 이번에 발견된 한국의 데이비드화병은 매우 큰 의미가 있다.

“나는 수집가라기보다는 안목 높은 분들의 도움을 받아 유물들의 숨겨진 큰 가치를 발견하는 사람이다. 이러한 유물들 가지고 할 수 있는 일들이 많다. 국공립박물관을 건립하여 세계인에게 공개하는 것도 좋고, 그동안 국제감정가 책정을 받은 유물들과 오래전 해외로 우리유물들을 등가 교환하는 것도 좋다. 그동안 세계 보물에 대해 학자 논문도 미비하고 문화적 쇄국주의로 인해 세계보물을 놓친 것이 많았다. 고미술품이야말로 문화적 온고지신을 확립할 수 있는 꽃이라 할 수 있다. 이제 한국도 세계 6대 수출대국답게 세계의 보물들을 잘 보호하고 전승하여 새로운 문화강국을 지향하는데 밑거름이 되도록 하겠다.”

민 원장은 조선시대 민초들의 삶의 애환과 실상, 조선 관료들의 비리와 폐단 해결과정, 깊은 효성과 국난 때의 나라사랑, 명쾌한 재판의 모습들이 고스란히 담긴 고문서를 가장 많이 수집한 사람 중 하나이기도 하다. 이러한 국내 고전유물에 대한 관심과 사랑을 중국 문화재로 확장시켜 마침내 세계인을 감동시킬 데이비드화병 정품을 공개한 민 원장의 노력과 행보에 앞으로도 큰 격려와 응원을 보낸다.

Proving the value of his treasure through his long career in administration and excavation

Min served in various roles during his 36 years' public service at Jangseong County and South Jeolla Provincial Government in the departments of urban development, energy, social welfare and legal affairs. He served as deputy mayor & acting mayor of Hwasun County before he opened Administrative and Legal Affairs Institute in Gwangju City. He is also an professional collector of antiques. With his knowledge in administration, he provided legal services for citizens and residents and was praised for his capability in the field. He started to have an interest in antiques when he became the head of tourism department at Jangseong County in 1993. He collected and interpreted the handwritings of Song Si-yeol, Min Yeong-hwan, Lee Gun-chang (secret royal inspector) and Song Byeong-sun (patriot) and collected 6,000 antiques including letters. He met Kim Hee-yong, who is the first Korean expert at excavating Chinese relics and was appointed as one of the 10 Cultural Masters by the Chinese government, and started to expand his scope to ancient Chinese relics. He visited numerous Chinese and Korean experts at Chinese ceramics and improved his ability to separate good ones from bad ones. One day, he found a blue and white porcelain similar to David Vase (UK) which many experts praised that there would not be a better blue and white porcelain than this in the world. With the support of Goheung County and Seoul Hongsan Culture & Chinese Ceramic Museum (Director Kim Hee-il), Min invited Prof. Huh Yeong of Renmin University of China Museum and Prof. Jin Il-min of Cultural Asset Valuation Department at Shanhai Gongre Management Institute to distinguish 290 genuine relics among his 230 collections (including the blue and white porcelain). The porcelain was proved to be a twin with David Vase based on its colour, picture, shape, glaze, 62 characters and the year of manufacture. This proves that more blue and white porcelains might had been made around the time than we know.

Clearer colour and perfect beauty that surprises renowned Chinese experts

More surprise is that the blue and white porcelain (Min's) has clearer cobalt colour patterns than the UK's David Vase according to the top authority in the field Prof. Huh Myeong. He said that all of 320 collections cannot even be worth the blue and white porcelain intact as it is and this 700 year old treasure is pride of the human civilization over just China. And he once more confirmed in a written form that the blue and white porcelain is exactly the same as David Vase after comparing the two for more than 5 times. Prof. Huh said that it might worth around USD $100 million if it went to rich people in China but Min rather wanted to use it to promote public interest in Korean culture. Min said "Like the UK has become one of the world's most visited countries in the world based on its cultural assets, Korea can surely follow the suit with global level antiques over just Korea." Min currently has deposited the porcelain at Goheung County which is building a KRW 42 billion museum. When it is completed, the porcelain will be displayed at the museum alongside Dumbung grayish-blue-powdered celadon.

Min's David Vase can appeal to the cultural circle in the world

The official name for the UK's David Vase is Daeyoudukkigeumheosangleeyeong. It was regarded as forgery on the theory that there were no such thing as blue and white porcelain in the Yuan Dynasty, China. It was then crossed over to the UK by a merchant called O Lea-hui and its true value was recognized when it reached to the hand of David who gave it the title the queen of blue and white porcelains. Min said "I don't think I'm a collector but a finder of the hidden value of ancient relics. Some part, I want to donate to public museums and some part, I think we can exchange with other Korean relics remained overseas. If we improve the level of systematic researches and management skills on ancient relics, it will be a strong foundation to promote Korea as a cultural powerhouse." Min also is the one who has collected ancient documents the most that depict the lives of our ancestors. Power Korea wishes Min a great 2016.
