Fostering duty free shop specialists with knowledge on global tourist industry

Travel industry usually involves a variety of multinational people and duty free shops especially in airports is in the fore front in terms of providing excellent customer services and generating profits. Regretfully, it still stays out of cultural industry. DFS HRD (Duty Free Shop Human Resource Development) Center CEO Kim says "Korea's DFS market took more than 10% ($6.7B) of world DFS sales based on 2014 and ranked No.1 in the field. But there is none of related majors in 350 universities in Korea while other service related departments are in full swing." Luckily, Kim started to work as an adjunct professor of Airport DFS at Jinju Health College in 2005. He passionately taught students foreign language ability, customer services and knowledge on the products they sell. Thanks to his effort, he now is also serving as a professor of Chinese Business at Daelim University College. Kim emphasizes that DFS is not about distribution but service.

He says "I grew up in Busan and graduated from Inha University College of Engineering and worked as a technology development researcher for a renowned steel company. But I found the currently job as my ideal." Kim showed a great interest in tourism. He traveled overseas a lot with a simple backpack and was charmed with airport related industry and eventually started to work at an airport duty free shop where most workers were women. He gradually built up his ability in selling and moved to cosmetics department. But he had no idea about cosmetics and one customer even complained "how can you deal with your job while you don't know much about cosmetics." Shocked by this sharp comment, he took a one year make-up course and studied day and night. As a result, he became the first male team leader in the DFS at the airport and became the first professor who teaches about DFS related industry in 2005. He made teaching materials himself and has fostered many talented students.

Kim, "Establishing DFS Major is urgent“
There are about 50,000 people working in DFS. It is a promising industry which can generate profits regardless economic fluctuation. In order to use the advantages of surging in Chinese tourists to Korea, Kim thinks that we need a long term plan rather than posting bilingual workers at the airport. He says "DFS market has grown considerably in size compared to 10 years ago. Of course language skill is vital but leadership and customer services are equally important. That is why I'm working really hard on fostering people who can meet those three core elements. As part of effort, I added lectures on DFS industry to Chinese Business but we still need a systematic curriculum." Work environment in DFS is relatively good especially for women who experience difficulty in going back to their former job after childbirth and rearing.

The industry provides a promising job for life as there is an increasing number of Chinese tourists according to Kim. With his 10 years of knowhow in the field, Kim has helped 200 students to get a job in DFS. He says "There was literally not a single male worker in the DFS at Incheon International Airport when I started to work there. Now, 7% to 8% are males." Kim took a part of achieving this rate by combining women's communication ability and men's leadership. 

Kim suggests three plans to keep the No.1 status of Korean DFS industry
Kim continues "Thanks to Chinese tourists, Korea remains No.1 in the field. But if we keep seeing the industry as part of distribution rather than service, the industry becomes highly vulnerable to external economic situation." For this, Kim has brought up three measures. Firstly, it is an active engagement with tourist industry that can cover K-Beauty, K-Culture and regional tourist resources as well as aviation and accommodation to create synergy effect. Secondly, it is fostering specialists to secure professionalism which can involve customer services, selling skills and foreign language ability. Thirdly, it is to improve the current patent system and work together with both major and SMEs.
