Two self-governing wards (Gu’s) of Daejon city designated as women-friendly city by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family

Daejon city on last 3 clarified that its two self-governing wards – Dong-gu and Daedeok-gu – were designated as 2015 women-friendly city by the Ministry of Gener Equality and Family. So far Daejon city enacted Gender Equality regulations and supported 200 million won for the project of developing self-governing wards, consulting and finding new businesses along with research on <Vision and strategy of Daejon’s gender equality policy by the 6th popular election> and <Plan on municipal and provincial self-governing bodies for developing women-friendly city>. Besides, the city has constantly found policy improvements through monitoring on public properties by composing civic women-friendly supporters and excavated projects through monitoring on gender mainstreaming by self-governing ward in an effort to be designated as women-friendly city.

The city estimated that all these efforts have brought the significant result of being designated by the Ministry as women-friendly city. This means that in Daejon city, three self-governing wards have already been designated as women-friendly. The new self-governing ward will sign an agreement for women-friendly city with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family during January next year and for five coming years will be supported by the Ministry for policy consulting on the whole project and professional training intended to strengthen propulsion capabilities.  Daejon city will support working expenses for undesignated self-governing wards next year, too, with an aim to have all its five self-governing wards designated as women-friendly.

To that end, securing the project expenses of 200 million won, the city is planing to drive positively on creating the women-friendly city by strengthening civil-governmental cooperation, such as operating municipal women-friendly supporters incessantly. Mayor Kwon Seon-taek said, “Since women-friendly city is an important regional policy that can improve the quality of civic life, we will give positive support to make all city people feel happy.” A women-friendly city means an administrative unit which operates women policy in direction that both sexes should participate equally in regional policies and developments and that its benefits go around evenly to all inhabitants and women’s development and safety should be implemented.

They will compose mobile community band by section to activate it as online channel for communication and enhance the understanding of current issues of administrative policy through a social meeting between Kwon Seon-taek, mayor of Daejon, and meeting and gathering with section chief and managers. Besides, Each section of the Happiness Committee is going to enhance communication among members by holding its own autonomous meetings occasionally for discussing matters and sectional activities, volunteer work and mountain climbing. Meanwhile, ‘Establishing the standards for Daejon civic welfare’ was set for next-time agenda of the committee. On December 14, a preparatory panel discussion is held at Daejon City Hall for understanding the agenda of Happiness Committee members and on December 22, general meeting is held at Daejon Convention Center for collecting the opinion concerning ‘establishment of standards for Daejon Civic Welfare.’
