아이들 우뇌의 숨겨진 창의력 이끌어내는 음악교수법
“7세 전후 아이들의 자아표현을 가르치는 유아음악교육으로 잠재력의 코드를 잡는다”

오르프-슐베르크법은 음악과 신체활동을 결합시켜 프로 뮤지션 지망생이 아닌 모든 어린이가 배울 수 있는 독일식 교수법이다. 여기에 한 단계 더 나아가, 한국의 고유 정서와 종합예술장르인 뮤지컬의 특성을 결합시켜 더욱 업그레이드한 음악교수법 니노 프로그램이 등장해 화제다. 멜로디와 음표를 기계적으로 외우게 하기 보다는 감정과 스토리를 음악으로 표현하는 법을 가르쳐 어린이의 숨은 감수성을 끌어내는 니노뮤직의 이우재 대표를 만나본다. 

악기마다 프로그램 만들어 자연스런 통합예술의 개념 심어줘
인간은 엄마 뱃속에 있으면서부터 외부의 소리와 음악에 반응한다. 인류 최초의 언어가 형성될 때에도 소리와 그림으로 표현하던 정서를 언어로 표현하게 되는 과정을 거쳤을 것이라고 학자들은 추측한다. 어른이 되어서도 음악으로 감정을 표현하거나 감상하는 능력은 인간만이 가진 특성일 것이다. 교육열 높은 민족 중 자연과학자와 공학자들도 연주할 수 있는 악기가 하나쯤 있다는 유태인과 달리 한국인은 대개 학업성적을 위한 음악교육을 받는데서 그치는 편이다. 음악교육이 두뇌발달과 정서발달에 어느 정도 영향을 주는지 정확한 연구결과가 없고, 단지 소근육 사용이 두뇌자극에 주는 영향 정도만 측정되고 있다.

소근육을 발달시키면 두뇌발달에 좋은 점에서 착안하여 진행 한 실험에서, 두뇌발달과 형성에 결정적인 만 7세 이전에 자연음악기를 통해 소근육을 사용한 그룹이, 컴퓨터 교육으로 소근육을 사용한 그룹보다 1.3배 정도 수학과 언어 능력이 우수했다는 미국 연구사례를 주목할 필요가 있다. 또한 SAT성적이 예술과목수강시간과 비례했다는 점 또한 주목할 필요가 있다. 2013년 2월 니노뮤직을 출범시킨 이우재 대표는 아시아모델 신인상 수상자이자 연극과 종합예술의 꽃인 뮤지컬 배우로 활동하다, 유아교육법 프로그램 전문가인 누나 이하엘 연구소장과 통합예술교육 프로그램을 개발하고 있다. “악기 연주가 어렵고 실력향상이 확연하지 않다보니 초등학교 이후에 배우게 하지만, 그 이전에 배우는 것이 두뇌발달과 감성을 일깨우는데 좋은 것은 누구나 아는 사실이다. 그러나 영유아교수법을 아는 예술인이 극소수이며, 그들 중 영유아에게 맞는 교육프로그램으로 가르치는 음악교사 찾기란 여간 어려운 게 아닐 것이다.

 ‘니노뮤직’은 관악기 중에서는 오카리나, 현악기는 바이올린, 선율악기는 피아노 식으로 영유아도 가능한 악기들을 선별하여 음악교육프로그램을 개발한다. 오늘날 리듬을 익히는 국악의 경우 보통 장구로 장단 연습만 하는데, 니노교수법에 의한 국악은 각 지역별로 아리랑이 다르게 전해지듯, 전통과 역사에 따라 발달하고 지역별로 전래되는 가지각색의 이야기와 그에 어울리는 장단이 있으므로 이를 뮤지컬화한 수업프로그램으로 재탄생 시킨다. 이것이 니노뮤직의 교육프로그램이다. 이 대표는 연주법을 배우고 끝내는 기존의 음악교육과 달리, 어떻게 소리와 음악이 만들어 졌고 자신의 정서를 음악으로 표현할 수 있는지를 배우는데서 아이들의 두뇌를 자극하여 두뇌발달에 기여한다고 한다. 단체수업 시 협동력과 사회성이 발달하는 면이 중요하므로 니노뮤직에서는 단체수업을 지향하여 가정에서의 소그룹 진행, 학부형을 참관시켜 할 수 있는 문화센터나 회관에서의 그룹교육을 지향한다. ‘소통하는 예술교육’을 어릴 때부터 인식시키는 것이다. 

아이들이 음악적 감성표현까지 도달하는 기간 단축, 창의적 예술성은 덤
유·아동 시절은 성격과 사회성을 만들어가고, 적성을 찾아주는 중요한 시기이기도 하다. 
그래서 니노뮤직 교육의 타겟은 만 10세 미만인 어린이들이며, 기존의 칼 오르프의 교수법이 놀이 위주라면 악기마다 프로그램을 만들고 연주하게 하는 방식은 니노뮤직이 유일하다. “1년 사용 기준 수백 가지 교구를 이용하고 춤과 연기, 음원, 노래, 이야기, 게임으로 구성돼 재미있게 배우게 되고 자유롭게 표현할 수 있기까지 걸리는 시간이 타사보다 짧다. 만일 유아학교의 경우 2월에 진행할 발표회를 목적으로 1년간 주1회 회당 30분씩 배워서 2-3곡을 외우는 기존의 개인이나 업체의 방식과 달리 같은 곡을 하는데 석 달 정도면 충분하다. 수업시간은 유아학교 보급형 수업의 경우 회당 30분씩이며, 특강수업·문화센터·회관·가정에서의 소그룹 모임수업의 경우 50분간 진행한다. 우쿨렐레의 경우 대개 그 나이대의 아이들은 3개 정도의 코드를 익히고 변환할 수 있는데, 니노뮤직의 우쿨렐레프로그램의 경우 8-9개 코드를 배우게 되고 오카리나는 10-12곡이나 연주할 수 있다” 
아이들의 두뇌발달에 좋은 적합한 악기를 선택하고, 연극 활동과 놀이식 수업을 제작하는 복합예술교육을 진행하기 때문에 아이들은 큰 흥미를 느끼게 된다.

4-5세를 위한 아트클래스에서 6-7세의 각 악기 음악수업으로 넘어가면 더욱 효과적이라고 한다. 아울러 이 대표는 “한글과 한자, 수리와 영어 등 지식과 소양도 배제할 순 없지만 유아 때에는 유아에게 맞는 예체능 교육이 메인과목이 되어야 한다”고 주장한다. 아울러 우뇌 자극이 가장 필요할 시기에 좌뇌 교육에 치중하는 우리 식 교육을 개선한다는 이 대표의 사명감을 느꼈다. 그래서 “전국 모든 지역에서 우리가 개발한 니노교육 프로그램을 진행하여 아이들이 연령대별로 놀면서 효과적으로 두뇌를 발달시키는 범국민적 교육키워드로 만들기 위해 노력하고 있다”고 한다. 아직까지는 국가가 관여하는 지원이 놀이 공간 확보와 보육 차원이기에 니노뮤직 처럼 자체 프로그램을 개발해 적용하는 업체들의 역할이 크다. 이 대표는 “앞으로 음악분야만이 아닌 모든 유아학습 분야를 통합예술교수법으로 개발할 것이며 그 시작으로 내후년 쯤 누구나 배울 수 있게 온라인시장에 진입하여 교육문화를 만들어 이 나라에 영재들을 썩히지 않겠다”는 각오가 남다르다. 어린이의 예술감성 교육을 겸해 창의력발달과 두뇌발달을 촉진 시키고 사회의 인재로 키워가는 첫 단계, 해외에서 인정받는 통합예술교수법에 니노뮤직,  니노 프로그램의 이름이 당당히 오르게 될 날이 기대된다.

Each program to each instrument to give natural understanding about music
It is known that a baby in a womb responds to sound and music. Scholars guess that the language we use might have come from sound and pictures and say that only human can express and appreciate art. It is also interesting to know that even a natural scientist or an engineer among many of the education-oriented Jewish people can play a musical instrument while education-oriented Korean people rather learn and play the instrument for school record. It is not known, however, that how much playing music can affect the development of brain and emotions except the fact that using small muscles can stimulate our brain. According to a test in the US, children aged less than 7 who played musical instruments showed 1.3 times better performance in maths and language than those who learned music with computer after 7. The former’s SAT record also was relative to the time period of art classes. With these facts in mind, Nino Music was established in February 2013 and CEO Woojae Lee had an interesting career path such as a musical actor and wining the Rookie of the Asian Model. He currently is developing total art education programs with his older sister Hael Lee who is a child education specialist. CEO Lee said “Most children learn a musical instrument or two when in a middle school but it is much more effective for them to lean them earlier. The problem is that it is not easy to find professional music teachers for children in Korea.”

Nino Music mainly develops music programs for ocarina, violin and piano which children can play with. Also, while other Korean classical music academies teach, for example, simple rhythm of jang gu (double-headed drum), Nino Music teaches both the technique and story of the instrument in the form of a musical. Children can understand how sound and music was made and can stimulate their brain by trying it at Nino Music. In addition, Nino Music values group class more than individual class at various places including cultural centers for improving children’s team work and the class often invites parents. 

Improving ability to express inner self
Childhood is a very important period to form one’s personality, sociality and aptitude. For this reason, Nino Music only invites children under the age of 10 and provides unique music programs for children to actually play each instrument. CEO Lee said “We use a variety of teaching materials for dance, music, stories and games to help children to freely express themselves in a short period of time. If other academies provide a 30 minute class a week for a year to perform two songs, we can make them do it in 3 months. We provide a 30 minute class at nurseries but a 50 minute small group class in outer places like culture centers or home lesson. For example, children can learn about 3 chords of ukulele but with Nino Music they can learn 8~9 chords and can play up to 12 songs of ocarina.”Children can learn many things through playing music and theatrical performance with Nino Music.

Art Class for aged 4 or 5 and Instrument Class for aged 6 or 7 are particularly effective if learned in a row. Lee said “Learning Korean, Chinese, English and maths are regarded as very important for child education but I think art education is more so at that age because they need to develop the right side of the brain rather than the left side. I hope Nino Music’s innovative teaching method will be used in more places in Korea and we are doing our best for it.”Although the government is giving more supports for securing play spaces for children than developing innovative educational programs, CEO Lee is determined to keep carrying on his development. Lee said “I’m planning to develop our current method into a total art education method covering many areas and to provide it online so that more children can find their hidden creativity.”
