피부과학의 시작 줄기세포 배양액 추출물을 주원료로 한 ‘루비셀’

각 기업들이 해마다 쏟아내는 셀 수 없이 많은 화장품 시장에서 소비자에게 어필하고 사랑받기 까지는 많은 시간과 에너지, 자본이 소모되지만, 그 중에서도 소비자에게 기억되는 것은 미비한 것이 현실이다. 그러나 제4세대 피부과학의 시작 줄기세포 배양액 추출물을 주원료로 한 화장품 브랜드 <루비셀>을 통하여 소비자의 사랑을 듬뿍 받고 있는 ㈜현성그룹 김봉준 회장은 다양한 제품 브랜드로 세계시장을 누비며 ‘사회환원’과 ‘내려놓음’을 실천하고 있다.

㈜아프로존은 현성그룹에서 개발한 줄기세포 배양액 추출물을 주원료로 하는 코스메틱 브랜드로, 국내에서 소비자 직접판매방식을 통해 성공을 거둔 거의 유일한 사례로 꼽히며 네트워크판매에 대한 불편한 시선을 완화시킨 기업이기도 하다. <4세대 피부과학의 시대>를 강조하며 과학이 만든 ‘인체지방 줄기세포 배양액’을 이용한 줄기세포 배양액 추출물 단백질 화장품인 ‘루비셀’을 출시해 제14대 장영실 과학대상 미용과학부문 대상을 수상한 ㈜아프로존 김봉준 회장은 이를 바탕으로 현재 루비셀, 아토락, 세비앙스 등 다양한 브랜드로 시장에서의 입지를 높이고 본격적인 세계시장 진출 및 사회환원 사업에 뛰어들고 있다.

김 회장은 “하루가 멀다하고 쏟아져 나오는 신제품과 판매 시스템의 변화에서는 획기적 아이템만이 경쟁에서 살아남을 수 있는 수단이다. 그러기 위해서는 우수한 제품 개발과 사회환원을 통한 기업이미지 제고와 사회참여만이 경쟁사회 속에 살아남을 수 있는 대안이라고 생각한다. 현재는 월드비전, 초록우산 등의 구호단체와 도움이 필요한 곳에 기부하고 있어 아직 사회환원이라 하기에는 부끄럽지만, 장차 문화장학재단을 설립 추진 중으로 국가관련기관 단체, 대학 기부 활동 등으로 영역을 넓힐 계획이며 이익 추구 집단보다는 사회적 기업으로 남게 하는 것이 가장 큰 기부이자 기업의 보람이라고 생각한다.”고 말하며 사회환원을 잘 실천하고 있는 대표적인 기업 ‘유한양행’처럼 사회환원을 통한 회사, 소비자와 상생하는 기업으로 나아가고 싶다고 말한다.

줄기세포 배양액 추출물 화장품 <루비셀>
루비셀은 2012년 출시된 화장품 브랜드로, 줄기세포 배양액 추출물 화장품 <루비셀>을 대표 제품으로 성장시켰다. 루비셀은 스킨의 영양성분과 줄기세포 배양액 영양 성분을 하나로 만들어 에어 분사 시스템을 이용하여 간편하고 효과적으로 피부에 흡수되도록 하는 위생적이고 효율적인 에어브러시 방식을 이용, 소비자 체험에 의해 우수한 제품력을 인증 받은 제품으로 손꼽히고 있다. 이 <루비셀>을 알린 판매 방식은 바로 소비자 직접판매 마케팅으로, 세간에서 말하는 네트워크 마케팅 사업이다. 국내 수많은 네트워크 업체들의 난립과 사건사고 등으로 어려운 사업환경 속에서도 소비자 직접판매방식을 통해 회사가 성장할 수 있었던 것은 오로지 제품의 질과 소비자 직접 판매방식의 본질인 직접 써보고 체험함으로써 제품의 효과를 느끼고 이를 통하여 제품과 회사에 대한 믿음과 신뢰가 쌓여 자연스럽게 네트워크 마케팅 사업자로 전향하는 시스템 덕분이었다. 

“네트워크 마케팅은 외국에서는 오래되고 선진화된 마케팅 방식이다. 그러나 한국에 들어와 정착하는 과정에서 잘못된 방식으로 네트워크 마케팅 자체의 인식이 나빠졌는데, 본래 네트워크 마케팅은 A업체에서 생산한 제품을 사용한 소비자 B가 C에게 추천해 C가 제품의 우수성을 확인 후 회사와 직거래하고, 추천한 B가 회사에서 이익의 일부를 받는 식이다. 즉 소개와 가입을 통해 물건을 저렴하게 구입하고 이익을 배당 받는 것이 네트워크 마케팅의 기본인데, 잘못된 방식의 다단계와 저질의 제품들로 인해 이미지가 안좋아지면서 무조건 신뢰할 수 있는 구조를 만들고 우수한 제품을 만들어 정직하고 믿을 수 있는 네트워크 마케팅의 시스템을 구축해야 한다고 생각했다. 그 조건이 되는 것이 바로 믿고 사용할 수 있는 우수한 제품의 개발 생산이다. 이에 회원들이 우수한 제품력을 바탕으로 회사 시스템에 의해 자발적으로 회사의 일원으로 참여하여 제품의 소비와 판매를 이끌어 나가는 원동력으로 세계적인 회사로 만들어 나가고 있다.”고 말하고 있다.

‘맨주먹으로 이뤄낸 기적’ 내려놓을 때를 아는 지혜
1983년 계명대학교를 졸업하고 건국대학교 경영대학원 CEO 과정을 수료한 김 회장은 본래 제조와 유통업계에 종사하다가 IMF를 맞아 서울로 상경해 고생을 겪어가며 기술신용보증기금 벤처 창업 교육 등을 수료하고 여러 회사의 기획이사 및 영업본부장 등을 역임했다. 2002년 한국 최초로 파이워터 냉온 정수기를 개발하면서 ISO 9001, 14001 인증 획득, 이듬해 김포 장기동에 제1공장 정수기 조립 라인 증설, 10월 한국표준협회 ‘으뜸마크’ 획득, 2004년 8월 중국 진출 등으로 국가품질경영대회에서 산업자원부 장관상을 수상하기도 한 김 회장은 대기업의 독식으로 시장이 좁아지면서 신제품 개발에 고민하던 중 해외 수출로 눈을 돌렸다. 이 때 처음으로 줄기세포 화장품을 해외로 수출해 소개해달라는 부탁을 받으면서 화장품 산업에 관심을 갖게 되었고, 줄기세포 배양액 추출물과 스킨의 영양성분 배합에 성공, 루비셀과 에어브러시 기술 개발까지 해내면서 직접 소비자들을 찾아다니며 강의와 체험을 제공하며, 대표 브랜드 <루비셀>을 네트워크 마케팅으로 성공시키는 성과를 거둔다. 이 성공을 바탕으로 현성그룹으로 거듭나며, 미국, 태국, 일본에 진출한 글로벌 기업으로 자리매김하고 있다. 

올해 11월 부산 벡스코에서 있을 아프로존 창립 기념 행사는 사업자들 대부분이 참석하는 회사의 가장 큰 행사가 될 예정이다. ‘그 축제의 중심은 사업자들이다’라고 강조하고 있다. 김봉준 회장은 “초창기 많은 사람들과 함께 일했지만 지금은 좋은 분들과 같이 하고 있다. 그분들의 좋은 기운들이 에너지가 되어 좋은 결과를 이루었다고 생각한다. 함께 동행해줘 감사한 마음뿐이며 파트너 분들의 도움으로 좋은 결과들을 얻은 만큼 빚지고 있다는 마음을 갖고, 보답하는 마음으로 사회적 기업으로 돌려주고 싶다. 마음에서부터 오늘의 결실을 보답해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다. 

일반적인 종교관은 갖고 있지만 종교의 근본은 하나라고 말하는 김 회장은 “’근본’을 중시하고 착하게 살자는 종교관 또한 오늘을 이루는데 큰 역할을 했다고 생각하고, 욕심을 버리기 위해 그리고 장기적으로 회사에 좋은 방향을 제시하기 위해 60세 때 은퇴하겠다는 계획을 세워놓았다. 맨주먹으로 이뤄낸 지금의 결과들이 기적이고, 이러한 기적을 감사한 마음으로 ‘내려놓는다’는 생각으로 더불어 사는 세상 만들기에 동참하겠다는 의미다. 

단기간 성장은 내 능력이기보다 기적이라 생각한다. 욕심내는 것 자체가 부담스럽다. 어려울 때는 남에게 피해를 주지 않고 극복하려고 많은 노력을 하며 성공만을 바라보며 살아왔는데 되돌아보니 너무 힘들게 살아왔다. 그 힘들었던 시간들이 오늘의 기적을 이루었고, 성과가 큰 만큼 사회에 돌려주어야 한다는 생각이다. 60세가 되면 사업자들을 위해 전문 경영인을 영입해 사업을 이끌어 나가도록 하고 연구개발을 통해 좋은 제품 개발에 힘쓰며 먼발치에서 회사의 발전에 이바지할 것이다.”고 말하며 R&D를 통한 우수한 제품 개발만이 기업이 나아갈 방향임을 말하고 있다.

“내려놓음의 큰 의미는 많은 분들에게서 받은 좋은 기운이 새로운 기운으로 융화되는 것이다. 그렇게 계획을 세우고 나니 이전에 힘들었던 때보다 마음이 편해졌다. 성장통을 겪으면서 발전했지만 아직 부족한 부분이 많다고 생각하며, 이러한 부족한 점을 개선하고 보완해 나가며 성장해 갈 것이다.”라고 밝히며 힘들게 이룬 회사이지만 결국에 사업자와 직원들이 주인이라는 생각으로 상생하며 성장해 나가야 세계적인 기업으로 거듭날 수 있다고 말하고 있다. 김봉준 회장은 마지막으로 일에 매진하면서 자녀들에게 아버지의 자리가 부족했음이 미안하지만, 자녀들이 아버지의 성공한 모습을 통해 감사하고 고마워하는 모습을 보며 행복하다고 했다. 앞으로 동남아시아 지역에 FTA가 체결되면 동남아 인근 지역 공략에 박차를 가하면서 전 세계에 한국 제품이 사업자들의 성장과 성공의 발판이 되어 미국과 같은 세계적인 부호들이 많이 생겨 날 수 있는 밑거름이 되도록 하겠다는 포부를 실행해 나갈 것이라고 밝히며 열정과 겸손으로 사업에 최선을 다하고 있다.

Introducing Ruby-Cell made of culture fluid extract of stem cell
Aphrozone is a cosmetics company which sells Ruby-Cell made of culture fluid extract of stem cell developed by Hyunsung C&I. Aphrozone is the sole Korean company in the history of the domestic cosmetics market which achieved a great success through a direct selling to consumers. With its slogan ‘4th generation skin science era’, the company introduced Ruby-Cell which won the grand prize in the skin science category at the 14th Jangyoungsil Science Awards. Encouraged by this, CEO Kim is promoting Aphrozone as a global cosmetics company with a variety of products including Ruby-Cell, Ato Rak and Cebien. 

CEO Kim said “Only the innovative products can survive in the age of limitless competition. Therefore, development of excellent products and active social contribution to raise corporate image are a must. We are currently donating part of our profits to World Vision and Childfund and also planning to establish a culture & scholarship foundation in the near future. Taking Yuhan Corporation as our role model, we pursue to be one of the greatest social enterprises in the world.” 

Ruby-Cell made of culture fluid extract of stem cell
Released in 2012, Ruby-Cell is the representative cosmetic of Aphrozone. It makes nutrients in the skin and culture fluid extract of stem cell to function together and it uses air spray system to be easily absorbed into the skin. It gained a remarkable popularity through a direct selling and received excellent feedbacks from consumers who actually bought and used the product. Thanks to the innovation of the product and an explosive respond from people, Aphrozone has become a major figure in the cosmetics industry in Korea. 

CEO Kim said “Network marketing is regarded as an advanced marketing method overseas. Although some Korean people have a bad impression about the method but it actually has a very sound selling system: a person called B buys A company’s product. He recommends the product to C. C then directly deal with the A company after recognizing the product quality. B then receives part of profits generated from C. This is the basic system of network marketing. The problem is that some companies run a wrong system and supply poor products. That is why we firmly stick to the basics while focusing on developing quality products. All of our members are both consumers and salesmen and they are the driving force of Aphrozone and we will only grow together with them”, adding that “With our excellent product quality, marketing strategy and the value of working together, we will be a role model of social enterprise and contribute to promoting national competitiveness. 

Miracle achieved with bare hands!
Kim graduated from Keimyung University in 1983 and finished a CEO course in Graduate School of Business Administration at Konkuk University. He started working in the manufacturing and distribution industries and served as a project director and director of business in various companies. He also completed venture startup training. He developed Piwater (cold & hot water purifier) in 2002, obtained ISO 9001, 14001, built additional water purifier assembly line in a factory in Janggi-dong in Gimpo in 2003, obtained ‘Best’ mark from Korean Standards Association in October the same year and won ministerial prize from Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy at the National Quality Management Competition in 2004 when it pioneered Chinese market. Around this time, Kim was working on developing new products and was asked to make stem cell cosmetics that could be sold in the overseas market. Thus born was Ruby-Cell and he introduced network marketing as the tool for selling the product. It was a big hit and Kim eventually established Hyunsung Corporation & Innovation. Currently, Kim’s products are sold in the US, Thailand and Japan in addition to Korea.

The event that celebrates the establishment of Aphrozone is to be held at BEXCO in November this year. It is expected to be a grand scale ceremony and most related officials and people are scheduled to be attending.  Kim said “If I worked with many people in the early stage of Aphrozone, I’m now working with good people. I am where I am today because of the good people. I will repay them with continuous innovation and hard work as well as return part of our profits to society.” Kim put ‘basics’ above anything else and he already decided his mind to retire when he reaches 60 so that the opportunity and chance will be shared among those young or better talented.

Kim is just happy enough with the fact that he built the company with his bare hands and only thankful for what he has achieved. CEO Kim said “Making a success in a short period of time is rather a miracle than my ability. I don’t want to be greedy. Looking back, I only pursued a success without a moment’s rest in the past but I think it is time I should start returning back my success to society. I will invite a management specialist to run the company when I become 60 but I will still give my best support and advice especially when it comes to R&D which is the core element for company’s growth” adding that “But most importantly, our staff are the true owners of the company because without their hard work, I and the company cannot be where we are now. Like we worked and grew together, we will march forward with one mind to make a better and bigger company that can play in the global market.” Kim also added that he feels really happy and worth when his daughters show a gratitude and compliment for his success. Lastly, Kim revealed his ambition to pioneer the market in South East Asia when Korea signs FTA with the countries in the region.
