Research on optimum designing system for eco-friendly architecture
Opened in March 2008, suBest Lab’s main focus has been on suBest-STEP (Sustainable Total Evaluation Package). The package is a group of LCA programs that evaluates the whole process of building materials and buildings developed by the lab. It is divided into two parts: Building Materials Level and Building Level. To evaluate the whole process of the first one, the lab developed CLAS(Concrete Life cycle Assessment System), and 6 kinds of assessment programs for the latter one. All the programs obtained a patent and an intellectual property right. Prof. Tae’s goal this year is to commercialize the programs. He said “So far, we have completed building a DB system and its algorithm but the simulation stage is still ongoing. When completed, it will develop to be a web version total management system.” However, there still remains a problem to solve: the calculation of environmental load. It has to start at the stage of deciding the subject of the evaluation and take into consideration the variables such as surrounding environment of the building and the user’s lifestyle. But Prof. Tae predicted that his team’s accumulated data base and research papers would enable them to draw a positive result although the application method for assessment standard is an urgent matter to solve.

Methodology for sustainable construction and development
Korea’s construction industry has been focused on the development of construction technology and system that can support eco-friendliness rather than the balanced development between environmental, economic and social values. Prof. Tae emphasizes that a methodology which can evaluate the sustainability of a building project is very important to go along with.

He explained about the lines that decide the standard of eco-friendliness by comparing industrial development and protection of the environment. He said that a biased opinion is dangerous and therefore the sustainable construction and development should satisfy the value of the time, technology, law, support system, quantitative evaluation skills, PR system and social consensus. Prof. Tae added that the domestic construction industry is in the stable phase at the moment and predicted that the demand of environmental evaluation such as LCA will be only increasing. For this reason, fostering related specialists is a must.
