Coloring the border between abstraction and nonrepresentationalism
"Colors in a limited space creates the most splendid imagination"
Abstract painter Lacju Sung

The passion in color expressed in abstraction
The art works produced in women's quarter are often very powerful and vivid. The sound of fulling cloth, for example, created a folksy rhythm duet and some ladies embroidered the beauty of nameless wild flowers on their skirts. Traditionally, women artists created art works by using thread, needle, scissors, flatiron, iron, measure and thimble. For this reason, they naturally made their debut as artists in their own houses.

An abstract painter Lacju Sung also started her career as an artist in the 1960s , the period where females artists produced beautiful household items with their hands. Sung grew up under the influence of her art collector father. She learned to express the beauty of light and color with needle and thread in her early age. Sung made the lines into circles and covered the dots with curved lines to fill up the surface of her work.

Her works were selected by Grand Art Exhibition of Korea in the modern embroidery category. Sung was the first graduate of Dongduk Women's University whose work was selected by the grand exhibition.

However, a change came and knocked the door of her artistic style. Sung visited a gallery in Insa-dong, Seoul, one day, and was inspired by the abstract art works. Sung says "When I saw the abstract art works in a gallery in Insa-dong, a desire came up from my heat that told me to shift my artistic style to painting from modern embroidery, dyeing and silkscreen.

Vivid color and unconventionality painted onto canvas
Sung's vivid and splendid works express intense pleasure and lapse of time.
Sung won numerous prizes including Grand Art Exhibition of Korea (special selection), The 1st Minjun (selected), grand prize at Hanseong Baekje Cultural Festival, Representational Painting Festival (special selection) and New Art Awards. Sung's use of splendid color and distorted or omitted objects deliver a hope and positive message to the colorful birds in the jungle in her work. Some of her mysterious and wonderful works are hanging on the wall of the White House (in time of Lyndon B. Johnson), Mannyonjang Hotel (the exclusive office of former President Park Chung-hee), Songpa Women's Culture Center and Moran Museum of Art. Sung's works were also appeared on SBS's dramas 'Your Woman', 'Wonderful Mama' and 'The Room of Two Women'. Abstract art is closely related to nonrepresentational art that expresses intuition and imagination freely. When asked about filling up a canvas with two different colors, Sung said "I make them into a form of nonrepresentationalism by expressing the lapse of time with strong hue freely and extemporaneously." For this reason, the flowers in Sung's works only make it clear the border between the flower and the leaves without realistic form of flower. Sung has a remarkable talent in doing this. Sung emphasizes the background more than the objects by using cobalt blue or complementary color or irregular patterns. Many people who have appreciated Sung's works said that they felt pleasure and comfort in her works. Sung says "The biggest charm of abstract art is to draw sympathy from unconsciousness located out of the zone that is defined by scenery and objects. We can see the world beyond the reality in Sung's works. If there is one thing we cannot see in her works, that is a 'limit'. And Sung does not concern about the limit. Sung says "I wish to foster talented young artists and to take part in spreading Korean art to the world." Sung's works expressed in unconventionality and comfort are closely related to her own personality and characters which makes her unique and beautiful in her own way.
