<Cover Story> CEO Kiwoong Han of Gyeongju Stone
The people who succeed the spirit of a thousand years of tradition
"I will build the best company upon stone"
A representative stone company in a thousand year old city

Han was born in Poseok Village in Bae-dong in Gyeongju City. The village is located right next to Poseokjeong (royal pond) where many stonemasons were born. It is reported that 20 stonemasons were born here and 6 of them are running stone companies. Gyeongju Stone among them is thriving with its meticulous finish of works in temples, stone pagodas, restoration of cultural assets as well as normal buildings. It has received excellent feedback and Han is always busy with a high volume of orders.

Han is the second son of two sons and a daughter. His father Haksoo Han(67) also is a famous stonemason who has worked in the field for 60 years since he was 16. Haksoo Han started to work with stone for a living at first but he gradually grew his passion in the profession and he eventually established Gyeongju Stone. His diligence and professionalism were second to none in the field according to local people.

Gyeongju Stone's main business include stone construction, building temples, stone sculpture, recovery of cultural assets, materials for normal buildings and oxygenic stone monuments. Gyeongju Stone moved its location three times and has gained a reputation as a clean work place by significantly reducing noise and dust.

Han succeeded his father's business and has been running Gyeongju Stone for 9 years. He started to help his father's work when he was a middle school student and eventually was ended up studying architectural engineering at Daegu University. When his father was hospitalized and worried about the order he received, Han worked instead for three days and nights without a moment's sleep to deliver the order on time and this impressed his father greatly according to his father's memory. But for Han, his father has always been Han's inspiration and a supporter.

The entrepreneurial spirit for raising family business
Due to its harsh work environment, most young people do not consider stonemasonry as one of their desired future professions. For this reason, Han is relatively young among other stonemasons but his ability to get along with them and business skills are actually surpassing his father according to the people in the field.

Old people tend to talk down to Han and have doubts whether he can actually do their orders well and on time but it is only a matter of time for them to change their rough attitude to respect once they see his professionalism and meticulous finish in the work.

When Han received a work on Gyeongsan Gatbawi(rock), he completed the 900 stairs in perfection for 6 months without a day off. Han's diligence and sincerity greatly impressed the chief monk of the temple and the monk put an end to his doubt.

Han's works are found in various regions. His major works include 'foundation of the Korean houses in Gyochon Village in Gyeongju City', 'Sebyeonggwan Hall in Tongyeong', 'Geumjangdae(pavillion) in Gyeongju', 'Jonggak(belfry) at Sunbon Temple in Gyeongsan Gatbawi', 'Haeanroo(pavillion) in Yeongdeok', 'Seokgatap and Dabotap(stone towers) and Poseokjeong(pond) in Gyeongju'. People say that Han's personality came from his father's virtue in diligence and attention to detail.

Diligence and sincerity
Most stonemasons are regarded as people who carry over a tradition from one generation to another. But the traditional industries are often involved in a poor environment. There were around 50 stone companies in Gyeongju but there are only 20 of them left now due to this harsh work environment. Han, nevertheless, is running eight stone cutting machines. This can be seen as a reckless management but Han sees it as an opportunity of investment in the future.
Meanwhile, Han is the youngest member and secretary of The East Sea Stonemason Association covering Gyeongju, Yeongcheon, Pohang, Daegu and Ulsan. Regardless of its age groups and background, building a good relationship with people based on trust and mission to succeed a tradition is Han's top priority. Han learned to train himself to be mentally and physically strong when he served in the Marine Corps he volunteered.

Han also has a natural talent of pushing forward a project once it falls in his hand. Han actually served in the Marine Corps for 2 years and experienced a tough reality of life when he lived in Busan city for another 2 years afterwards.

Promoting Gyeongju Stone to the top stone company in Korea
When asked about the competitiveness of Gyeongju Stone, Han said "I just do my job really hard. The only thing I can do, as a relatively young stonemason in the field, is to work more and better than others with my young passion and challenging spirit. When several years passed and when I woke up one morning, I found that I had built a considerable number of my clients. Experience is a better asset than money and trying hard can overcome the time. My motto is 'Let me suffer hardship when I am young and it will not betray me later'.

Rome was not built in a day. So was not the art of stonemasonry. Our ancestor stonemasons knew the wisdom of waiting and patience and watched how things turn out. And Han's father's 50 years of devotion to his passion in the single path has always been a wisdom for Han. Han learned humility and respect with the lapse of time.

The difficult time his father faced and overcame when IMF hit Korea in 1998 made Han realize how important were the sound capital and systematic management of a company as much for young passion and driving force. Han's meticulousness and efficient management of both his staff and business actually came from this.

It is known that nearly 80% of Korea's cultural assets are made of stone. Therefore, keeping and succeeding a traditional industry is meaningful and very important despite one might suffer much from financial hardship. Han said "I am more proud of myself as a stonemason who can pass down a tradition than a financially successful man at the time. In that terms, I wish to promote Gyeongju Stone to the top stone company in Korea."

Han is a pioneer who found and has walked his own way bravely. He is proud of what he has achieved. Like the famous stonemason Asadal of Baekje Kingdom came to Silla Kingdom and built the masterpiece Seokgatap and Dabotap (stone pagodas), Han is determined to create yet another masterpiece that can spread the excellence of the Korean culture to the world.
