[Cover Story] Master stonemason Im Il-ho (nickname: Un Kyeung)
Statues of the Buddha and Virgin Mary expressed in natural beauty
Holding first solo exhibition at Uijeongbu Arts Center last November

Walking a single path as stonemason for 30 years
Statues of the Buddha, Virgin Mary and lions gaining great popularity

Im was born in Seocheon County, South Chungcheong Province and grew up there until his teenage years. The first job he did after graduating high school was to help his parents' greenhouse farming which he worked really hard for 3 years. However, he doubted about his career as a farmer and he took the opportunity to be a stonemason when one of Im's acquaintances was impressed by his hard work and recommended him a new career. Im then went to Seoul and started learning stonemasonry under the teaching of Kim Jin-bong (now deceased). It was more hard and difficult than farming but Im found a great pleasure to create something new with stone. After 3 years of training, Im worked for various places including Jinheung Stone and Taehwang Stone and won a bronze prize at The 12th National Skills Competition in 1977. With his much experience and proved skills, Im eventually established his own factory called Hokyeong Stones in 1984.

As a devoted Catholic himself and his family, Im decided to do something with cathedral works at first but the pay and the amount of works were not enough for a living. Thus he added Buddhist statues to the list of his works and he started producing and exporting Lion Statues (Komainu) usually placed around Japanese shrines and his clients praised high about Im and said that they would only buy Im's works.

"Feeling the characters and texture of the stone is most important"
Holding first solo exhibition at Uijeongbu Arts Center last November

Im's works express realistic and classical esthetics rather than modernity with which most comtemporary stonemasons tend to deliver. Im said "it seems that many people have the propensity to modern works but I think I can do various try from classical to modern based on my realistic style." Im continued that feeling the characters and texture of the stone is most important for stonemason because it is vital to create unchanging value of the work, adding that "some stones get worn out quickly and some don't even among the national treasure pagodas. This is because the stonemason was not careful analysing its characters and texture. If one can choose a right stone for a right work, it can last more than a thousand years."

As his fame proves, Im has received tens of appreciation plaques and the medals for merit since 1987. He also has participated in group exhibitions for 20 times and recently held his first solo exhibition at Uijeongbu Arts Center last November. It seems like his solo exhibition is a little bit late compared to his long and prosperous career. However, with its family value and companionship as the main subject, Im held his first solo exhibition with much praise. Some of his works displayed include 'A Woman With A Baby', 'Happy Family' and 'Woman Drawing Water' and they all imply a value of harmonious family. Also present in the exhibition was Im's philosophy of 'going together rather than going faster alone'.
"My works are my tools for communicating with people"

Im finds a great sense of achievement when he did a work which other people cannot do. Despite the every turns and twists he experienced during his long careers, that achievement has been the driving force of Im. He said "we know the stonemason by appreciating his/her works", adding that "I feel really worth and happy on the fact that I can pour my energy and passion in one thing and can communicate with people through my results." For this reason, Im regrets the fact that there are not many people who know the true value and pleasure of being a stonemason. Although there are competitions and support from the central and local governments, lack of interest and the element of hard work that the job involves make all of its effort insipid. In the hope of activating the field, Im is currently working hard as Regional Head of Korea Stone Sculpture Association Seoul and Gyeonggi Province.

Giving unsparing support and advice for junior stonemasons
Im tried to buy a disused school to turn it into a communal workshop and exhibition hall, secure a place for an outdoor exhibition place and create a related department at regional lifelong education centers. Nothing has been achieved yet but Im is making himself ready to do it for his junior stonemasons and students. Im said "one must think this job as a vocation. It is also an important factor that from whom you want to learn and how to start. But more important is one's passion and attitude. I often tell my juniors and students to not only learn teacher's skills but also his/her attitude and personality and if you win your teacher's heart, you will certainly get what you want."
Im loves stones more than anyone else and devoted most of his life to it. Power Korea wishes him a good result and prosperous 2015.
