사고력을 키워주는 ‘특별한’ 수학영재 학습법

‘수학적 사고력’은 과학기술이 중시되는 21세기를 살아가는데 있어 가장 중요한 능력으로 부각되고 있다. 미국의 교육심리학자인 브루너(Jerome S. Bruner)는 ‘수학교육은 수학적 사고능력을 인식시키기 위한 것’이라고 말하며 일상생활에서의 문제를 해결하는 데에 수학적 안목이 중요한 역할을 하고있음을 강조했다. 세계적으로도 수학교육이 무엇보다 중시되고 있는 이 때, 우리나라 교육현장에서 수학은 그저 ‘어렵고 지겨운 과목’일 뿐이다.

최근 실시된 한 설문조사에 따르면 초등학교 6학년 중 36.5%, 중학교 3학년 42.5%, 고등학교 3학년 59.6%가 수학을 포기했다고 한다. 수학을 포기하는 학생들, 이른바 ‘수포자’의 비중이 고학년으로 올라갈 수록 증가하는 현상은 대한민국 교육이 가진 문제점을 여실히 드러낸다. 이에 교육부에서는 교육개정을 통해 서술형수학, 스토리텔링수학 등을 제시해왔지만 기존의 학습방식에 익숙해진 일선 학교와 학원들에게 이는 또 다른 학습부담이 될 수밖에 없다. 수학교육에 대한 근본적인 패러다임을 바꾸는 일이 무엇보다 시급한 것도 이 때문이다. 이에 수학 콘텐츠 개발회사인 EBB스터디의 최갑숙 대표는 강남에서 15년간 7곳의 학원을 운영하던 노하우와 직접 수많은 학생들을 지도하며 경험했던 것을 토대로 수와 연산을 쉽고 재미있게 익힐 수 있는 특수비법 학습 ‘다비수(다양한 비법 수학)’를 개발했다.

According to a research, 36.5% of the 6th graders, 42.5% of the 3rd graders of middle school and 59.6% of the 3rd graders of high school have given up mathematics. This indicates that the Korea's education system somewhat needs a change. The Ministry of Education actually introduced 'descriptive math' and 'storying telling math' but they are becoming a new burden to some schools and academies. Specialists say that a fundamental change of the educational paradigm is urgent. As part of the effort, CEO Gapsook Choi of EBB Study introduced special method called 'Dabisu' meaning a variety of ways to math based on his 15 years know-how in teaching math through 7 of his academies in Gangnam District, Seoul. Choi said "most school parents want their children learn math in speed. They force them to memorize multiplication table as soon as they finish addition and deduction. The problem is that they eventually lose interest in math because they do not understand its principle."
