Detecting deadly francisella tularensis

The innovation of detecting francisella tularensis with advanced nanotechnology
Dr. Howang Lee discovered hantavirus in 1975 by dying serum with fluorescer to find antigen. As a result, he raised Korea's global profile. After 40 years, Professor Jonghoon Choi and his team of Bio-nanotechnology at Hanyang University succeeded detecting francisella tularensis at 1/10 of minimal concentration with pathogen detection by using apoferritin nano particles synthesized in genetic recombination. Detecting francisella tularensis, as deadly as anthrax, in this condition, means that we are now able to detect the risk elements early in the biological warfare and can save many lives. Francisella tularensis was developed by the US government against the former Soviet Union in the 1960s and has high fatality rate like botulinum and cholera.

Only 10 germs of francisella tularensis can kill a person when in the body. With nanotechnology, Choi transmitted nano-structures, consisted of 24 apoferritin protein, and fluorescer and used these matters as carrier to stick to the virus. He then manipulated the gene to make the part where antibody and fluorescer are merged with protein and reveals it to the virus so that it can easily adhere. This technology actually increased the rate of adherence significantly when compared to the past. It means that we are now able to detect the deadly virus with even a small amount of it. Supported by Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, National Research Foundation of Korea, Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Ministry of Health and Welfare, Choi and his team's great achievement has been published on international academic journals specialized on toxic substances.

The technology enables us to detect virus even when two kinds of high risk bacteria are mixed. Choi finished a PhD course and research course in the US three years ago and devoted himself to combining nanotechnology with high risk pathogen when he came back to Korea. He developed antibacterial type 'Nano Complex Structure' by applying nanotechnology and is currently working on analysis of the characters of pancreatic cancer cell. Choi and his team's recent achievement gained international confidence in the field and the technology can be applied widely to the defence industry especially in the bacteriological warfare. 

Fusion study with firm foundation to draw bigger results
Choi highly praises the research capabilities on industry-academic cooperation and engineering technology of Hanyang University. Choi said "I and my students of Bio-nanotechnology Department are currently working on nanotechnology-inspired detection and treatment in the medical fields. We are also carrying out stem cell biological treatment and recovery of scar tissue in cooperation with Dental School at Yonsei University in the hope of regenerating the tissue, affected by birth defect such as palatoschisis, by using stem cell."

The Department of Bio-nanotechnology is a combination of Biotechnology and Nanotechnology and it is very important to build a firm foundation for the department to develop. Choi said "I encourage my students to have one's own identity as a bio-nanotechnology scholar. Finding one's role in our society is as important as building professional career in the field. Many of clinical instructors also show a great interest in detecting virus and curing cells and tissues with nanotechnology. For this reason, fusion study between the departments are becoming common and these cooperations will certainly contribute to the development of the field."

Choi added "many of my colleague researchers in the US are advancing with their knowledge and ability. I hope that Korea's engineering technology will match with those of global technology after 10 or 20 years. In this respect, we will actively exchange related information with overseas scholars and professors." It seems clear that these fusion studies and exchange will contribute to job creation and national development. Active investment in R&D can equip Korea with global competitiveness and Choi and his team will play a great part to raise national profile in the world.
