Gyeongju University leading the Korean tourism to the world
Promoting global tourism specialists and the industry
Koo Bon-ki, Dean of the office and Professor of Hotel Management at Gyeongju University

"Tourism is a growth engine for social development"
As tourism is growing to be a core industry in many countries, Korea also is exerting its effort to promote the industry. Among many universities in Korea, Gyeongju University, located in the city with a thousand year history of Silla Kingdom, has been particularly exerting its effort in fostering talented tourism specialists.

The university boasts the highest number of students relating to tourism in Korea and is providing an industry-academic based curriculum which includes global training courses & programs to foster global level tourism specialists.

Based on its specialized and down-to-earth system, Koo has actively engaged in promoting related researches, seminars, lecturing methods and international exchanges in the hope of raising the university's global competitiveness in the field. For this, Koo is willingly playing various roles as Professor of Hotel Management/Tourism Management, Director of Lifelong Education, Dean of the office and Director of Living Hall. He also served as the 20th and 21th Chairman of Korea Academic Society of Tourism Management and held various university student's idea competitions, symposiums, consultations and seminars. These efforts are clearly evident as the academic journal of the society called 'Tourism Research' was ranked No.2 among 2,000 academic journals at KCI (Korea Citation Index).

Koo said "tourism is a complex study that relates and influence with a variety of industries in society. In this respect, tourism can be a growth engine for co-development of the society."

"Differentiation is needed to enter the global market"
Recently, tourism is tend to develop towards 'qualitative tourism' where pleasure and rest can be enjoyed at the same time. Tourism basically needs a lot of manpower as the service has a certain limit to be provided by machines. For this reason, Koo is exerting his effort in fostering global tourism specialists who are equipped with professional knowledge and executive ability.

The university built overseas training programs customized to meet the standards of Canada, the US, Australia, Japan, France and Germany and is providing students opportunities to experience various tourism and culture in the world. As a result, students are bringing up innovative and creative ideas through widened point of view and approximately 65% to 70% of them are being employed by travel agencies, airlines, hotels, casinos and convention centers.

Koo also helped students make a club called 'Tour Korea' so that they can experience regional tourism and developing a new course by themselves. Koo said "combining theory and executive ability in hotel management is vital." In fact, Koo worked as a CEO of travel agency for 16 years and his know how and experience in the field is playing a crucial role to provide students down-to-earth knowledge and skills.

Meanwhile, Koo pointed out that "undifferentiated development policy of the domestic tourism cannot produce productive results but the development of customized tourism products based on each region can draw a long-term and regionally beneficial results", adding that "giving a good impression to foreign tourists is also very important to activate the industry and for this, we need a continuous improvement in transportation, accommodation and shopping facilities, not to mention the increased understanding about sharing each other's culture."

As the best tourism & cultural asset specialized university in Korea, Gyeongju University is not only emphasizing on practical training but on the value of humanity and social contributions so that students can grow together with the society.

Koo added "differentiated competitiveness in tourism is a must to promote globally talented students and the industry. For this, Gyeongju University is running a global training system in cooperation with partner universities in the world so that we can be one of the best tourism & culture specialized universities in the world over Korea."
