한글을 현대회화로 확장시킨 금보성 작가
작가 발굴에 앞장서다.

우리 전통 문자인 한글은 1446년 세종대왕이 훈민정음이라는 이름으로 반포한 것으로서, 유네스코 세계문화유산에도 등재될 만큼 체계성과 과학성, 실용성 면에서 매우 뛰어난 문자라고 할 수 있다. 이 한글을 독특한 회화적 관점으로 풀어내 주목받았던 금보성 작가는 최근 아시아 미술 즉, 한국미술이 오방색과 여백 그리고 형태적인 방법으로 현대미술로 접근하기는 구태연 하기에 기존 물감이라는 재료로부터 벗어나야 한다고 역설하고 있다. 현대미술을 바라볼 줄 알아야 세계미술 시장에서 자유로운 작업을 보여 줄 수 있기 때문이다. 

스티로폼 소재 '한글 이름-명화' 시리즈로 독특한 미감 완성해
여수 바다미술제 출품한 풍선 방파제 작품 주목
금보성 작가는 ‘한글회화’의 대표 작가로 널리 알려져 있었다. 그의 작품이 독특한 점은 우리 한글 문자의 조형적 미감을 살려 작품 세계 전체를 만들어 나갔다는 점일 것이다. 상형문자인 한자와 달리 문자 자체로는 그림의 소재가 되기 어려울 것이라는 중론에도 불구하고 금보성 작가는 하나하나의 문자를 적절히 조합시켜 각각의 주제에 맞는 미적 요소들을 만들어왔기 때문에, ‘최초’이자 국내 한글회화를 대표하는 작가로 자리매김할 수 있었던 것이다.

한편, 금보성 작가는 최근 파격적인 행보를 이어가고 있다. 한글 화가로서의 정체성을 이어가면서도 회화 작업에만 머무르지 않고 스티로폼과 풍선 등 조형물을 활용한 설치작업으로 변신을 시도한 것이다. 재료를 바꾸게 된 계기는 오랜 기간 작업했던 팔이 붓을 들을 수 없을 만큼 뼈와 연골이 닿아져 의사로부터 그림보다는 장기간 치료를 통보 받았기 때문이다. 그 후 금보성 작가는 오히려 재료를 바꾸면서 “생활 속에서 접할 수 있는 소재를 탐구하는 것이 화가들이 해야 할 일”이라는 것을 깨달았다고 한다.

금보성 작가의 '한글 이름-명화' 시리즈는 스티로폼으로 다양한 한글 이름을 조각처럼 깎아내는 작업을 선보였다. 유화 물감이라는 재료에서 쇠, 돌, 종이에 이어 스티로폼과 풍선을 이용한 작품을 발표하였다. 금 작가는 여수 친수공원에서 열린 바다미술제에 풍선을 재료로 6미터의 방파제를 설치하였다. 방파제는 태풍과 해일로부터 재산과 생명을 지키는 역할을 했지만 이제 단순한 방파제를 현대적 코드로 전환하여 회화적이고 캐릭터적인 친근감으로 재해석하였다. "개인의 생명만이 아니라 지역과 도시 그리고 국가를 지키고 보호하는 지킴이. 즉, 모든 것을 수호하는 의미로서 방파제는 작품으로 완성되었다고 한다. 현재 방파제는 여수바다 위에 설치한 후 강원도 횡성 산위에 설치되었다. 풍선 방파제는 산과 바다를 지키고 보호하는 현대미술로서 적절한 대중과의 눈높이에 성공하였다.

미술계의 허브이자 유망 작가의 등용문 '금보성 아트센터'
대관료 없이 직접 발로 뛰며 작가들 알리는 데 주력해
금 작가는 종로구 평창동 '금보성 아트센터' 를 운영하고 있다. 활발하게 작가 발굴하고 전시 활동을 지원하는 데 힘을 쏟고 있기에 컬렉터와 일반인 그리고 작가들에게 손꼽히는 전시를 기획하는 곳으로 알려져 있다. 금 작가는 지방까지 직접 발로 뛰어 작가를 찾아내고 작가들에게 지원을 아끼지 않는 것으로 유명하다. 그는 “금보성 아트센터는 미술계의 허브 역할을 하고자 한다. 아트센터는 과거 시험 보러 가는 분들이 해가 지고 배고플 때 쉬어가는 주막 같은 곳이기를 바랜다. 이곳이 목적지가 아니라 더 멀리 꿈을 이루기 위해 잠시 쉬어 가는 곳으로 다녀갔으면 싶다”고 전했다. 

아트센터는 국내에서 가장 많은 전시를 기획하는 곳 중의 한 곳이지만 직원이 없는 곳으로 유명하다. 아트센터의 모든 일들을 아웃소싱하고 있다. 기획, 디자인, 설치, 영상, 광고지원 등 전시와 관련된 일부터 500여평의 아트센터 관리까지 전문적이고 체계적으로 시스템화해 매월 6회~12회 전시를 오픈하고 있다. 무엇보다 아트센터는 다양한 이벤트와 행사를 유치하고 있다. 공연, 행사, 돌잔치, 결혼식, 상견례, 고희연, 산수연, 체험학습, 강의, 회사회식, 요리, 방송광고 등의 행사를 열고 있으며 최근 종영된 압구정 백야와 전설의 마녀를 촬영하기도 했다. 전시공간은 지역 종교 정치와 관계없이 선호하는 곳 중의 한 곳이다. 금 작가는 전시도 중요하지만 작품을 드러내는 것도 중요하다고 생각하기에 많은 사람들을 전시장으로 초대해 단 한사람이라도 더 전시를 보여 주고자 하는 열정으로 빛과 바람이 소통되는 공간 특별한 공간으로 만들어가고 있다.

‘창작의 수고로운 짐을 진 자유로운 영혼의 쉼터’로 아트센터에서 전시한 작가는 현재까지 600여명이 다녀갔다. 금 대표는 40대 중반에 한국화랑 역사에 중요한 40년이 된 그로리치 화랑의 3대 관장으로 출발하여 갤러리 평창동과 김흥수미술관을 인수하였고 현재의 새로운 금보성아트센터로 자리 잡기까지 숱한 경험과 어려움을 견디어 냈다.

작업과 경영은 쉽지 않은 일들이지만, 기도하기에 가능하였다고 고백하는 작가 금보성은 대중에게 관심 없는 한글이미지를 작업한지 30년 만에 한 분야에 우뚝 설 수 있었다. 한글 회화를 현대회화로 더 드러내고 알리기 위해 조형과 설치, 디자인 등 다양한 방법으로 대중에게 다가서는 것을 기대하며 지치지 않은 원동력으로 한글을 대한민국 미래 문화의 지문이자 동력으로 만들 것이다. 

금보성아트센터에서 전시하려면 최소한 2~3년 기다려야 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기다리는 작가들에게 감사하고 죄송하다고 한다. 내년 전시를 위해 최근 중국, 미국, 영국, 호주, 독일로 출장을 떠나고 있다. “아트센터도 활동력을 갖추려면 싸움기술을 배워야 한다고 생각합니다. 그래서 해외 미술관과 박물관 갤러리에서 배우고 있는 금보성 관장. 그의 그런 활동에서 웃고 있지만 비장한 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 이런 일련의 활동들을 통해 어느새 금보성 작가는 대한민국의 미술계를 대표하는 인물이 되어 가고 있었다.

Styrofoam based 'Korean Name-Masterpiece' series to create unique beauty
Drawing attention with Balloon Breakwater at Seaside Art Festival in Yeosu 
Geum is famous for his 'Korean alphabet painting'. His uniqueness comes from the fact that he uses formative esthetic value of Korean alphabet to make his art world. He combines each character of the alphabet appropriately to create the message he want to deliver based on each esthetic element. For this reason, he firmly settled his status and the first and representative Korean alphabet painting artist.

However, his recent work is rather new. He tried to create a sculpture made of styrofoam and balloons. This is because the bone and cartilage of one of his arms is worn out due to the continuous use of the arm up to the point where he is advised from a doctor to refrain from painting. Geum said "rather than depression I might have had by hearing the news, it actually made me realize that artist's job is to study on various materials, especially from daily life, to create works."

Geum's 'Korean Name-Masterpiece' series is made of styrofoam carved like a sculpture. Starting from oil painting, he introduced various forms of art works by using metal, stone, paper and styrofoam. Especially notable is his 6 meter Balloon Breakwater installed at Seaside Art Festival in Yeosu. Geum reinterpreted breakwater as a pictorial and character-like work from its original function of protecting people and property from tsunami and typhoon. Geum said "I added a meaning that it not only protect us and our property but also the region, cities and the nation in a symbolic term." Geum's Balloon Breakwater is now installed on a mountain in Hoengseong County, Gangwon Province. 

Geum (Kim) Bo Sung Art Center as hub of art and place for new artists
Providing a venue for free and promoting new artists
Geum is running Geum Bo Sung Art Center located in Pyeongchang-dong, Seoul. He is actively promoting new artists and for this reason, the center is famous for holding creative exhibitions among collectors, artists and normal people. Many people praise Kim for his effort in traveling the whole nation to find talented artists and give a support. Geum said "I want my center to function as a hub of art world. You, as artist, can drop by and have a rest anytime you want. This is not the place of your destination but a resting place where you can prepare to leap forward."

The center is also famous for holding large number of exhibitions but there is not a single staff because Geum outsources all the projects from planning, promotion to management so that each exhibition can be run professionally. Geum opens 6 to 12 exhibitions a month in the 1,652 square meter center. The center also is used for various purposes such as performance, first-birthday party, wedding ceremony, 70th/80th birthday party, experience/lecturing hall, staff party, kitchen, commercials and drama set. So far, 600 artists have an exhibition in the center and Geum always invited as many audiences as he can so that the exhibition can be shared and enjoyed by many and in full. Before Geum opened the center, he served as the 3rd director of the 40 year old Growrich Gallery in his 40s and then took over Gallery Pyeongchangdong and Kimheungsou Gallery to make them into the current Geum (Kim) Bo Sung Art Center. 

Geum said that he had to go through many turns and twists but his prayer to God made him devote his life to creating Korean alphabet in the form of art for the last 30 years. Geum added that the Korean alphabet is the driving force of the Korea's cultural development. 

Unfortunately, you have to wait for 2 to 3 years to exhibit your work at the center. Geum expressed his thanks and regret at the same time for those artists who are nevertheless willing to wait. He is currently doing business trips to the US, Britain, Australia and Germany to learn and provide more advanced exhibition skills.
