사랑 가득한 향기를 노래하는 ‘수호천사’
열심히 살았기에 실패도 아름답다

처음에는 둘이 동일인물이라는 사실이 믿기지 않았다. 전국 최연소 보험왕이자 베스트셀러 「나는 수호천사다」의 저자인 ‘보험인 강정애’와 농도 짙은 감성으로 감동을 주는 시화집 「응원합니다」의 ‘강정애 시인’이 같은 인물일 줄이야. 게다가 국제로터리 3662지구 회장이며, 경영학 박사이자 수많은 강연을 통해 사람들에게 지혜와 깨달음을 전하는 명강사인 그녀의 삶은 두 손으로 꼽기엔 턱도 없이 모자랄 정도로 다채롭다. 일인다역의 수많은 역할들을 모두 충실해 해내며 살아가는 그녀의 이야기를 들어보고자 월간 파워코리아가 아름다운 섬 ‘제주’를 찾아가봤다.

누구보다도 치열하게 살아온 시간들
제주시 애월읍에는 수산리라는 마을이 있다. 계절마다 색을 바꿔 입는 너른 초원 너머로 쪽빛 바다가 넘실대는 이 마을은 예로부터 물이 맑고 산세가 수려해 ‘물메’라고 불렸다고 한다. 강정애 대표는 아름다운 섬 제주에서도 유달리 빛을 발하는 마을, 물메에서 태어났다. 2남 5녀의 다복한 가정의 여섯째로 태어난 강 대표는 갓 스무 살이 되던 1988년 공채로 보험회사에 입사하게 된다. 스물여섯이 되던 해에는 최연소 영업소장으로 승진하고, 동양생명보험으로 자리를 옮긴지 5년 만인 2003년에는 국내 생명보험사 사상 업계 최연소 ‘명인’의 자리에 등극한다. 지금처럼 일정 수준 이상의 직원 모두에게 부여하는 호칭이 아닌, 말 그대로 전국 1위에게만 수여하는 ‘명인’이라는 호칭은 보험인으로서 살아온 그녀의 ‘그때까지의 삶’을 대변하는 표지와 마찬가지였다. 

인구가 적은 제주에서도 연도대상 우수상 및 최우수상 등을 연거푸 수상했으며, 제주지점 환산여왕 연속 70회 이상의 기록을 세우기도 한 그녀가 「나는 수호천사다」를 출간하게 된 것은 ‘명인’ 수상 이듬해인 2004년이었다. 억대 연봉의 보험인으로서, 가정과 자녀를 돌보는 어머니로서 누구보다도 치열한 삶을 살아온 10여 년간의 기록 중 일부를 발췌하고 다듬어 펴낸 이 책은 출판하자마자 영풍문고 경제처세술 베스트셀러 4위에 오르며 ‘저자 강정애’로서의 이름을 대중에게 각인시켰다. 또한 이 책은 세계 보험인들의 명예의 전당이라 불리는 MDRT의 엄격한 심사를 거쳐 수십 개국의 언어로 번역되며, 세계 문맹퇴치를 위한 도서로 활용되고 있다.

타인을 위한 삶이 ‘나의 가치’를 결정한다
보험인으로서 누구보다도 높은 위치에 오른 강정애 대표. 자신의 부족함에 대한 반성으로 써내려간 글이 사람들에게 희망을 주고, 살아갈 용기를 주는 모습을 보며 그녀가 깨달은 것은 바로 ‘인연’이라는 단어가 가진 힘이었다. 강 대표는 “많은 사람들이 화려한 결과만을 바라볼 뿐, 그 과정의 차이점을 알지 못해요. 사람으로 나고, 자라며, 죽기까지… 그 과정을 얼마나 ‘농밀한 밀도’로 살아가느냐가 현재를 결정짓거든요. 그리고 그 안에서 저를 키워주고 성장시켜준 수많은 인연들이 존재한다는 사실도요”라고 설명했다. 

강 대표의 이러한 생각은 진정으로 사회를 위해 스스로가 할 수 있는 일이 무언지를 탐색하는 데에 이른다. 자신이 나고 자란 제주, 곁에서 힘이 되어준 가족과 직원들, 자신을 믿고 키워준 고객들에게 작으나마 힘이 될 수 있는 일에 손을 보태기 시작한 것이다. 이후 그녀는 국제로터리 3662지구, (사)한국에이즈퇴치연맹제주지회, (사)한국유네스코제주협회, (사)김만덕기념사업회 등 수많은 사회단체의 회장·이사·운영위원으로 활동을 이어오게 된다.

그러나 항상 자신의 부족함을 되돌아보며 더 나은 봉사와 공헌에 대한 갈망을 느껴오던 강 대표는 박사 학위를 위한 진학을 결정하게 된다. 하루 평균 60여회의 고객미팅과 3,000여 명이 넘는 고객, 세 자녀의 양육과 병석에 누워계신 어머니의 뒷바라지로 눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁜 와중에도 그녀는 하루에도 몇 시간씩 비행기를 타고 내륙을 오가며 학업을 계속한다. 잠자는 시간조차도 아까워 찜질방에서도 논문을 읽던 그녀는 연세대학교 경영학 석사 학위에 이어, 2013년 오랫동안 준비한 은퇴관련 논문을 발표하며 여성 보험설계사 최초로 박사학위를 취득하게 된다. 또한 그녀는 케이엔젤미래경영연구원을 통해 더 많은 이들을 도울 수 있는 연구를 지속할 계획이라고 밝혔다.

마음을 담아 전하는 사랑의 가치
최근 발표한 시화집 「응원합니다」(푸른사상, 2014.11.30.)에서 그녀는 ‘내 안에 사는 사랑은/여문 가을처럼 풍성하고/푸른 바다처럼 청명하다’고 말한다. 풍성하고 청명한 사랑이 ‘내 안’에 살고 있다고 말하는 것이다. 자신 안에 사랑이 가득하다고 믿는 것, 자기 자신을 사랑하는 이러한 자세는 곧 타인에 대한 사랑으로 이어진다. 자신을 사랑하지 않는 사람을 타인을 사랑할 줄 모른다. 그저 타인의 사랑을 빌려와 자신의 빈 곳을 채우려할 뿐이다. 그런 의미에서 그녀의 멈출 줄 몰랐던 열정과 노력, 쉼 없이 전진하면서도 의심하지 않았던 그 고단한 여정이 그녀 스스로에게 주었던 ‘기쁨’은 바로 자기자신에 대한 사랑의 기쁨이었다. 부족한 자신을 반성하고 진정으로 남을 사랑하기 위해 부지런히 연마했던 시간들이 그녀를 한 송이의 꽃으로, 스스로 아름답기 위해서라기보다는 ‘남을 위해 향기를 나누어주는 들꽃’으로 피어나게 한 것이다. 강 대표는 “사람은 누구나 재능을 가지고 태어납니다. 그 재능을 발견하고 개발하며 창조하는 삶을 사는 사람이 있는 반면에, 평생 알지 못한 채 살아가는 사람이 있죠. 제가 발견한 저의 재능은 ‘사람을 볼 줄 아는 눈’이었습니다. 그리고 ‘스스로가 평범하다는 것을 깨닫는 일’이었습니다. 평범하기에 부단히 노력하고, 평범하기에 도움을 받고, 평범하기에 다른 이들을 돕는 것이 저의 사명이었던 것 같습니다”라고 말한다. 

강 대표는 앞으로도 자신에게 주어진 일들과 해야 할 일들, 할 수 있는 일들에 최선을 다하겠다고 말했다. 자신이 지금까지 성장하는 데에 수많은 이들의 도움이 있었던 것처럼, 그녀도 다른 어려운 이들을 돕고, 그들이 가진 재능을 발견하고 키울 수 있게 돕고자 한다. 또한 그녀가 속한 조직 내에서 ‘어떻게 하면 더 잘할 수 있을지’, ‘어떤 방법이 더 많은 이들에게 행복을 전해줄 수 있을지’를 고민하고 연구하겠다고 강조했다. 그녀는 이에 더해 “다른 이가 당신에게 무엇을 해줄 수 있을지를 생각지 말고, 자신이 다른 이들에게 무엇을 해줄 수 있는지를 생각하라”고 강조했다. 그리고 그녀 자신 또한 제주의 주민으로써 지역사회의 발전과 행복에 공헌할 수 있다는 점과 자신이 살아 숨 쉴 수 있는 현장에 있을 수 있다는 것이 너무나 행복하다고 덧붙였다.

‘제게 주어진 모든 사랑/온 세상에/씨 뿌리게 하소서’라며 조건 없는 사랑을 다짐하는 강정애 대표. 브랜드로서의 ‘수호천사’가 아닌, 그 자체로서 모든 이들의 수호천사가 되고자 하는 그녀의 삶이 내는 향기가 푸른 섬 제주의 너른 초원을 넘어 모든 이들의 마음에 자리하게 되기를 응원한다.

Going through a bumpy road
There is a village called Susan-ri, Aewol-eup in Jeju Island. It is blessed with clear four seasons which show different colors according to its time and the waves of the sea dance and sparkle over the meadow. It was called for 'Mullmae' as the village is surrounded by crystal clear streams and beautiful mountains. Kang was born in this village as the sixth daughter among seven sisters and brothers. She started to work for an insurance company when she was twenty in 1988. She got promoted to the youngest managing director in the company when she was 26. She then moved to Tong Yang Life Insurance and became the youngest master in the field of life insurance after 5 years in 2003. 'Master in this term meant No.1 in the nation and this was a great achievement for her. 

She won numerous prizes including excellent and grand prizes in a row in Jeju Island and won 70 times of Exchange Queen Prize. It was in 2004 that she published a book 'I Am a Guardian Angel'. The book contains the story about the bumpy road Kang has gone through as a career woman who made hundreds of thousands a year and as a mother who was raising children for the last 10 years. The book ranked No.4 in the business strategy section of Youngpoong Books and Kang became more famous as a writer. The book has been translated into tens of other languages through MDRT's strict screening. 

"Life for others decides who I am"
As an insurance specialist, Kang enjoyed being in the top place. The power which encouraged her to write the book to give a hope and encouragement to other people actually came from the people relationship she has built. Kang said "many people tend to see their splendid future without understanding the procedure it requires. How intensively you live decides where you are now. And there were intimate people relationship that actually made me where I am now." This means that one must find ways to help others and society first before finding for one's own benefits. In Kang's case, she always wanted to give a helping hand to Jeju, her hometown, family and colleagues and her insurance subscribers who always believed in her.

Also, Kang is serving as Chairman of Rotary International 3662 District, Chief Director of Korea Federation for HIV/AIDS Prevention Jeju and Member of Steering Committee of Kimmanduk Commemoration Service Society. In addition, she challenged for a master's degree and a PhD despite her tight schedule: 60 meetings with insurance subscribers a day, managing more than 3,000 subscribers, raising 3 children and taking care of sick mother. She crossed to the mainland many times by airplane and studied regardless what kind of place it was and finally obtained MBA from Yonsei University which soon followed by a PhD in 2013 as the first female insurance planner in Korea. As also a researcher of K Angel Future Management Research Institute, Kang is determined to help more people in need with her know how and knowledge. 

The love delivered by heart
Kang recently published a poem and picture book called 'I Give a Support For You' in November 30 2014 (Prunsasang). One of poems says "Love living in my heart / As abundant as autumn / As clear as green sea." To believe that there is full of love in her is actually leading Kang to love others more. If you do not love yourself, you do not know how to love others but just borrow other's love to fill your empty place. All those passion, effort, march forward and believing in herself was a result of loving herself. Through self-reflection and loving others, Kang was reborn as a flower not to boast her beauty but to give her fragrance to others. Kang said "everyone is born with a certain talent.

Some people find, develop and recreate their talent and some people even don't know what their talent is until they die. My talent is that I have an eye to see people and to realize I am a normal person. Because I am normal, I work really hard, I receive help from others and I give it back to society in return." Kang is determined to do her best to keep carrying out what she has to do in her life. As she received many from others, she wants to give it back to the people in need. She emphasized that she would study harder to find ways to do better in her job. Kang said "ask not what other people can do for you; ask what you can do for other people." Kang is very happy that she contributed to the development of the community in her hometown. 

The poem continues "I pray to god / All my love you gave me / Be spread to the whole world." Kang hopes that she will be a guardian angel for everybody over just an insurance planner and writer.
