Saying goodby to prejudice and handicap with 'Inside Out'
Ways to raise confidence of youth
Dr. Choi Won-ho, Chief Director of Youth Intercultural Association

Why not try Inside Out for your precious youth?
Choi wrote 'Parents With Inferiority Complex' in 2010 to help those who suffer from lack of communication with their children. He now has come back with a new book called 'Inside Out'. He said "we need to understand why young people are troubled first and then suggest ways for them to overcome the hardships. They are usually suffer from their sensitive mind rather than power and money. For this reason, they tend to have a sense of defeat if they lose confidence and fall into inferiority. I gather numerous cases through various meetings with youth and put it into a book called Inside Out." If you hide your troubles and pretend you are ok, things are not getting better. Choi continued "I led them to look at their inner self. They looked ok outside but many of them had a wounded heart. Only 10% to 20% of university students are happy with their major according to a report. This is because they choose a major according to their school record rather than what they want to do or be. These are the people I want to give my help and encouragement." Choi introduced SWOT: Strength, Weakness and OT. People tend to improve their weaknesses rather than to make it stronger of their good points. In other words, it is more effective for a person to improve English if they are good at it rather than to hassle with maths with which the person is bad at. Choi added "the longer you hold on your weak points, the bigger self-hatred and a sense of defeat you will get. On the contrary, you can grow your dream and hope if you focus on your strong points."

"Subjective test has limitless answers while objective one has limited answers"
Choi said "I majored in electric engineering which is regarded as a promising subject to survive in the society after graduation. But I suffered from it terribly as it was one of the subjects I wasn't good at. Then I found a pleasure in psychology and I felt like I was at last going through the long dark tunnel. When I shared this story with students, they showed a strong sympathy." Therefore, it is important to find one's own strength and talent through SWOT according to Choi. The troubles of youth are like a fish born inside the neck and it makes life really inconvenient if not pulling it out.

Likewise, one needs to scan one's problem and pull it out to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Choi continued "parents with wandering children shed tears when reading my book 'Inside Out'. University students also run tears at the difficulty part of getting a job. There was a time that it was a virtue for young people to voluntarily experience hardships but that is literally past. The youth now have weaker psychology in a fiercer competitive environment of surviving. This means that a parent's scolding and bullying in school can lead a student to even commit a suicide", adding that "one can improve the weak points by reading Inside Out. Many young people nowadays tend to choose from what is provided in front of them rather than what they want to choose. The latter is very important as life is not about choosing an answer among four multiple choices but about making the answer by oneself."

"Youth with confidence and self respect contributes to national interests"
Many students find self respect after having a consultation with Choi. They turn themselves to be positive and active from negative and passive. Choi is working for Korea Education Research Institute and as Chief Director of Youth Intercultural Association which is a nonprofit corporation affiliated to Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is trying to establish ways of thinking and national value for youth through various exchange programs in cooperation with overseas countries including the US and China.

Choi said "inculcating a sens of national identity in young people is very important. The young people of the US know well about the conception of Pax Americana. But history education in Korea is wholly focused on having a good school record while advanced countries' is focused on the value and philosophy of the history. If our young people are put on a global stage without the value and philosophy of the Korean history, they are likely or easily to forsake their own country. This is the reason why we (the association) are focusing on the value, philosophy, patriotism and humanity."

Therefore, it is very important for Korean young people to have self confidence and respect and to find and do what they are good at. Choi continued that there would be many changes in paradigms in the 21 century and added "young people need to find and challenge for new things if they are to create the 3rd industrial revolution. Without a confidence and bigger dream, one cannot be a global leader. Making a resolution is easy. But throwing a question to oneself of why, how and for what I want to do this is the privilege of a real and brave young man."
