국가발전의 동맥, ‘교통’의 발전을 이끌다
산학밀착형 교육 운영으로 전문인재 양성

한국교통대학교 

흔히 교육 ‘백년지대계’라고 말한다. 백년 앞을 내다보고 세워야 하는 큰 계획이라는 뜻이다. 우리나라에 대학교육이 시작된 이래, 수많은 교육자들이 국가의 번영과 많은 이들의 행복, 지식의 탐구를 위해 후학 양성에 힘써왔다. 그 가운데서도 110년의 역사를 가진 한국교통대학교는 국내 유일의 교통 특성화 대학으로, 빠르게 변화하는 사회에 능동적으로 대처하고 각자의 분야에서 제 역할을 다하는 리더를 양성하고 있는 일반 종합대학이다.

교육의 가치를 높이는 열린 대학
충주대학교를 모태로 한국철도대학, 청주과학대학과 통합을 통해 2012년 본격적인 출범을 알린 한국교통대학교는 ‘진리탐구, 미래창조, 인류봉사’를 대학 이념으로 삼고, 400여명에 이르는 교수진과 수준 높은 교육 시스템, 다양한 전공을 통해 각 분야의 창조적 리더를 육성하기 위해 매진하고 있다. 교통·항공·공학·인문사회 중심의 충주캠퍼스(대학본부), 보건·생명·국제화 중심의 증평캠퍼스, 철도 중심의 의왕캠퍼스로 구성된 한국교통대는 현장 중심의 실용교육을 통해 국제 감각을 갖춘 미래 인재 양성에 주력하고 있기도 하다.

한국교통대의 가장 큰 특징은 교통 전문 인력 양성을 위해 국내 최고의 철도 관련 학과를 운영하고, 항공 교통 인력 교육을 위한 항공운항학과와 항공서비스 학과를 두는 등 ‘교통’이라는 범주 안에서 ‘융합교육’을 실현하고 있다는 점이다. 공공교통과 민간교통, 교통문화 분야에서 활동하는 교통 전문가와의 유기적인 협업과 소통이 가능한 능력을 키우기 위한 일환이다. 김영호 총장은 “최근 대학사회는 거센 구조개혁의 압력을 받고 있는 상황입니다. 특히 지역사회와 산업에 밀착한 인재 양성이 무엇보다 중요한 과제로 부상하고 있습니다. 저희는 이러한 시대적 요구에 발맞춰 교육 인프라 구축, 연구경쟁력 향상, 국제화 등 대학 내실을 다져 ‘세상과 통하는 대학’을 만들기 위해 노력하고 있습니다”라고 밝혔다.

현장중심의 미래형 인재 양성
한국교통대는 실무능력을 겸비한 창조적인 인재양성을 위해 캠퍼스별 특성화 중점 분야를 선정하고, 이에 따라 산학연 협력연구 및 교육을 추진하고 있다. ‘Connect the World’를 대학의 비전으로 정립한 한국교통대는 지난 4월부터 2020년 2월까지 시행되는 ‘IPP형 일학습병행제 사업’을 통해 교통 분야에 특성화된 전문성, 현장에 바로 적용 가능한 실무능력과 안전재해 대응능력을 갖춘 자기주도형 인재양성시스템을 구축해나가고 있다. 특히 충북권 대학 중에서 유일하게 운영기관에 선정된 한국교통대는 연간 최대 10억 원의 사업비 투자를 통해 현장중심 학사제도와 체계적인 현장훈련 운영을 뒷받침하기 위한 대대적인 교육과정 개편에 착수하고 있다. 

한국교통대는 이와 함께 2017년까지 시행될 ‘중소중견기업채용연계형 산업인턴지원사업’을 통해 학생들에게 다양한 산업현장경험을 제공하는 한편, 전공학습과 현장실무가 자연스럽게 채용으로 이어지는 시스템을 구축해 취업률 향상을 도모하고 있다. 김 총장은 “학생들에게는 전공실무능력과 문제해결능력의 향상을 통한 취업역량 강화의 기회를, 기업에는 우수한 인재를 조기에 발굴하여 활용할 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 기대하고 있습니다”라고 설명했다. 그밖에도 한국교통대는 2020년까지 15억 8천만 원이 지원되는 ‘창업선도대학 육성사업’을 바탕으로 새로운 가치를 창출하게 될 창업아이템을 발굴하고 이를 사업화하며, 성장을 촉진시킬 수 있는 창업지원 특성화 모델을 구축해나갈 방침이다.

또한 한국교통대는 ‘3D프린팅 기술기반 창의혁신선도센터 구축사업’을 통해 차세대 핵심산업기술로 떠오르고 있는 3D프린팅 전문기술 인프라를 구축할 예정이다. 약 320평의 전용공간에 3D프린팅 전시실 및 체험실과 아이디어 팩토리 등 국민 참여공간을 조성하는 한편, 기업 기술지원과 기초·전문인력 양성, 창업지원 및 비즈니스 활성화 프로그램 등을 지원하게 된다. 이번 사업은 제조업의 3차 혁명으로 불리는 3D프린팅에 대한 지원과 인력양성을 통해 충청권 전략산업과의 시너지 효과를 창출하게 될 것으로 기대되고 있다. 
학생과 사회가 요구하는 수요자 중심의 교육과정을 통해 교육의 전문성과 효율성을 높이고, 국가 발전과 사회의 행복에 기여하는 글로벌 교통 리더의 요람으로 도약하게 될 한국교통대학교의 앞으로의 행보를 지켜보자.

An open university that raises educational value
Korea National University of Transportation was established 2012 by combining three universities: Chungju University, Korea Railroad College and Cheongju Science University. Under the slogan 'Pursuit of truth, Creation of future, Service to mankind' and with 400 professors and excellent curriculum, Korea National University of Transportation is exerting its effort in fostering talented students. The university has three campuses: Chungju Campus (headquarters) specializing in transportation, aviation, engineering, humanities and social science, Jeungpyeong Campus specializing in health care, life science and global studies, and Uiwang Campus specializing in railroad. 

The best feature of the university, however, is that they are running Korea's best railroad related departments alongside aerial service departments which make the university unique in the category of transportation covering both public and private transportation and their communication. Kim said "many universities in Korea are under pressure of reforming at the moment and the regional industry-based policy and manpower is regarded as core tasks. In accordance with the demand, we are exerting our effort in building regional-based educational infrastructure while improving global competitiveness in R&D." 

Fostering future-oriented students based on field curriculum
In order to implement industry-academic cooperation, the university brought up a vision: Connect the World. For this, they are building a self-directed human resource development system with which students can apply their executive abilities and disaster response capabilities through 'IPP Type Studying and Working Project' lasting until February 2020. Also, the university has been solely chosen for the implementation organization and they are working to build a field curriculum by investing $1M project fund. On top of that, they are providing field experience that will subsequency lead students to employment through 'SME & Industry Internship Support Project' lasting until 2017.

Kim said "this will equip students with executive abilities and problem solving skills and companies will have advantages to find a right manpower in early stage." In addition, the university is planning to launch a start-up ideas program based on 'Start-up Specialized University Promotion Project' which will be supported with $1.5M until 2020 alongside creating an infrastructure for 3D printing technology through '3D Printing Technology Innovation Center Project'. For this, they are planning to build 3D printing exhibition hall, experience hall and idea factory on a 1,057 square meter space and to support for technologies of industry, start-ups, and business activation programs. The project for 3D printing is highly expected to create synergy effect for the regional economy and the university will play a great role to lead the field.
