Strong industry-academic cooperation

Gangneung-Wonju National University opened its first door in 1946 as Gangneung College of Education and was merged with Wonju University in 2007 to be the current university. As a renowned national university in the central area of Korea, it has fostered talented students for the last 69 years. It was chosen for 2008 Excellent Manpower Promotion University, ranked No.1 in 'the number of quotation per paper' and the 6th university at 2009 Top Asian Universities, and No.4 in Korea and No.22 in Asia at 2010 Small and Medium Size Universities. 

In addition, Gangneung-Wonju National University LINC has been carrying out national industry-academic project for the last 6 years since 2009 and is functioning as the hub in the province with excellent results. Wang said "with our vision 'The Best University in Industry-Academic Cooperation', we are carrying out various related projects. Based on 'Industry-Academic Cooperation Cell', we are focusing on the new material and ocean bio fields through building industry-academy models and introducing Open Tech Program."

Industry-Academic Cooperation Cell is a microcosm of LINC's projects and functions as the foundation to strengthen the cooperation between professors, students and industries. Through this, LINC is developing human resource programs, customized curriculum, capstone design and promoting personal & material exchanges and field training, providing technical advise & R&D plan, staff training and industries support. Wang said "through the participation of 73 industry-academic cooperation cells last year, LINC achieved 69 employment, field training (56.0% participation rate), capstone design (74.7% participation rate), field technique training (330 cases), development of technology (40 cases), transfer of technology (16 cases) and taking orders in R&D support plan ($2.8M)." Meanwhile, Industry-Academic Cooperation Cell was recognized as an industry-academic model in 2013 and won, with a family company TS Corporation, Ministerial Prizes from Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy and Ministry of Education. 

Taking initiative in promoting SMEs with strategic industry support
LINC is taking initiative in promoting SMEs through All-Set Customized Industry Support which analyses each company thoroughly and Idea Power Plant Project which promotes exchange of ideas. All-Set Customized Industry Support provides a road map for growing business and 12 participated companies increased the sales by 28% ($20M to $26M) and created more jobs by 39% (115 to 160 employees). TS Corporation developed battery package, BMS System, multi-wire motor and Korea's first electric shuttle bus based on various industry-academic programs and technical support. Wang said "the strategic industry support project is not only increasing family company's sales but also creating jobs and co-growth of regional companies relating to parts." Idea Power Plant Project also is bearing good results such as job creation, start-ups and technology transfer. Student CEO Kang Ho-kil of Rami who developed Arginine Kimchi said "I started to develop the idea through Capstone Design but I never knew I could get this result. I really appreciate the support of LINC, Start-up Training Center and Industry-academic Cooperation Team. 

Wang said "we had many problems when we first launched the project in both Gangneung and Wonju campuses. But as a result, we could build know how of effective management skills in running the cooperation team and regional associations. We introduced 4 core values of the project which are 'Sustainability', 'Maximization', 'Effectiveness' and 'Maturity'. With these core values and our STEM-Cell Strategy, we will do our best to paly the leading role in  industry-academic cooperation in the region."

Gangneung-Wonju National University LINC's challenge to be the top productive university in the field is limitless. The university's new ideas on dutch coffee, natural blueberry jam, wellbeing muffin and handcrafted mug drew a great attention at Gangneung Coffee Festival last year. LINC's new direction for industry-academic cooperation, drawing substantial results and organic cooperation will contribute to the development of Korea.
