[Cover Story] Master builder Jeong Jae-won
Building house that will last a thousand years
Walking a single path as a great carpenter and receiving a prize from Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA)

Succeeding family business for 50 years
26 Hyochon-ri, Gwangkyeo-myeon, Yangju City, Gyeonggi Province. This place is busy with numerous carpenters building Jeonsacheong (preparation area for ancestral rites) by December this year. This Korean house to be built on a 826m2 land is owned by Hyuam clan of Suwon Baek familiy (chairman Baek In-gul) and is being constructed by Buphwa Architecture & Engineers (CEO Jeong Jae-won).
Jeong is currently taking another big building project alongside this Korean house. He is a certified artisan (CHA's No. 2490 as Korean carpenter) and has 50 years experience in the field. Jeong's works cover from repairing cultural assets, Buddhist temples, canopy, Takjjwa to Korean type carpentry nationwide.

Jeong was born in Muan, South Jeolla Province and is succeeding his family business as the second generation. He had talented hands since he was young and fixed small doors of his house by himself. He went to his aunt's house in Seoul when he was a middle school student but soon left the house to be a carpenter.

Jeong participated in building numerous Buddhist temples nationwide until 1990. He then established Buphwa Architecture & Engineers to focus on building traditional Korean house. He engaged in building many Buddhist sanctuary from the very beginning of running his own business.

Building shrines from 2003
"I build house that will last a thousand years"

Jeong's business covers both modern buildings and traditional buildings. He also started building shrines when he happened to know about family shrines from his acquaintances by moving his base to Paju, Gyeonggi Province. He is known as a trustworthy man among many of his clients. Yongmun Temple, Heugyong Temple in Pocheon and Cheonmun Temple in Nowon District as well as numerous shrines and palaces are Jeong's achievements.

Jeong says "I feel worth when my clients offer me a bowl of Korean rice wine with satisfaction when completing a building. It's the happiest moment in my life. For this reason, I always build a house or building that will last a thousand years."
Traditional Korean houses are based on wood materials. Choosing a right wood, therefore, is the first step you need to take. Then you need to consider the principles of yin and yang when carving, poling and assembling the house with your heart full of passion and affection in the process.

Jeong says "trees are unchanging and last a thousand years when soaked with water. Cement cannot compete with wood as it causes mold and atopy but wood accompanies red clay and the house gets cool in summer and warm in winter. This is the virtue of traditional Korean house."

Unstinting and affectionate character to cheer staff up
"Strong foundation is vital to build a perfect house"

Jeong is an unstinting, affectionate and humorous person. You will know once you start talking with him. This of his character palys a great role to cheer staff up when working in the field which often struck with harsh conditions and environments such as heat and cold.

Jeong once lost all of his fortune caused by his business. But people around him threw themselves into the matter enthusiastically and gave a helping hand to him. This proves well about his good character and virtue.

Jeong prioritizes attention to detail whenever he launches a new project. People who work under his instruction become independent after 10 years. But many of them likely make problems by working faster than they should to make more profits. For this reason, Jeong always advises his juniors to work slow but accurately as this can bring a satisfactory results for both themselves and their clients.

"I want to spread nice but affordable traditional Korean house"
Receiving a prize from Cultural Heritage Administration

Jeong decided to fulfill his wife's dream: to build their own house. Jeong built many houses for others but not for himself and his wife for 50 years. His wife must have been patient watching Jeong to work for others. But she finally asked Jeong to make a house for them somewhere in the middle between Inje (her home town) and Paju. Touched with her wife's request, Jeong decided to build their own house at a hillside in Maseok, Namyangju.

Jeong divided a 1,652m2 land into three parts and built a house in the middle for them and two houses on the sides for their guests. Jeong says "I was sorry for my wife for not having our own house for a long time but we finally have one and I'm happy now."

Jeong says "it's my long-cherished dream to build and spread nice traditional Korean house at an affordable price. There have been many support for certain areas including Jeonju Traditional Korean Village and carpenters but not for Gyeonggi area. We are currently expecting a government support from next year and I hope this will be well spent on promoting local carpenters in the region."

Meanwhile, Jeong was appointed as a director of Korean Cultural Properties Craftsman Association in 2011 and took the vice president's position of the northern ares of the association following year. He won Hanmaum Awards in the traditional culture sector in 2011 and received a prize from Cultural Heritage Administration this February. Jeong also is actively involved in experience programs for children. He devoted his life to popularizing traditional Korean house and this is the reason we want to give a cheerful applause to Jeong.
