[Cover Story] Master craftsman Yang Jae-gyeong (nickname: Hae Suk)

Succeeding father's speciality of Korean lacquer
The years of touch of artisan's hand to be a master craftsman

Succeeding his father Yang Ki-taek's lacquer technique to run Daewon Lacquer Workshop
Obtaining a Cultural Properties Repair Certificate in lacquer and a Master Craftsman
Yang was born in Daejeong-ri, Sannae-myeon, Namwon-si, North Jeolla Province and he has never left his hometown. His father Yang Ki-taek, who established Daewon Lacquer Workshop in 1962, was a famous lacquer specialist in the region. His father's lacquer is to mix crude lacquer, hwachil (lacquer) and polishing lacquer appropriately to produce a thick layer which reduces volatility but lasts dark red color longer on pinky hue. This has been the unique lacquer method of Daewon Lacquer Workshop.
However, the job made his father hard to get by and he was often ended up with a considerable amount of debt as a result. However, despite the harsh conditions of the job, Yang jumped into his father's business as soon as he was discharged from the military service in 1984. But he had to endure skin diseases caused by sap of the lacquer tree for one and a half years and financial hardship like his father went through. Around this time, his father published a book called 'Yang Ki-taek's Lacquer Technique' on September 1992, with the help of Professor Kim Jeong-tae who was a specialist in cultural assets, and was appointed as an intangible cultural asset and died soon after. Yang almost gave up the job but was encouraged by his father's death and started to devote his life to running the workshop in earnest from 1993. The workshop finally was recognized by receiving Appointment Letter for Speciality Complex from Namwon City in 1995 and another one for Local Speciality Producer following year.

Yang started to actively engage in various competitions and his works were selected by The 24th Handed Down Crafts Competition and The 12th Korea Cultural Asset Artisan Fair, and he received Runner-up Prize from Korea Crafts Art Association in 2009, Participation Prize from Korea Cultural Crafts Art Competition in 2009, obtained a Lacquer Master's Certificate from Korea New Culture & Art Exchange Association in 2005, Cultural Properties Repair Certificate in lacquer and Master Craftsman in 2014, and Master Craftsman from Federation of Korea Art & Cultural Organizations in November 2014.

Master's Set of 33 Bowls used in Buddhist temples
Passing down traditional Korean lacquer technique

Lacquer has a long history but collecting the sap of lacquer and its making process are difficult which make the field difficult to be commercialized. As a result, the handicrafts made of mother of pearls are becoming more popular. Yang said "I'm working on ways to revive the traditional lacquer technique with modern elements in the hope of attracting more people to the crafts."

Yang's main works are a set of bowls used in Buddhist temples. The Set of 33 Bowls especially is his representative work which he spent 3 years to complete. It is not much to say that the delicate hue and reddish lotus patterns on the bowls are a work of art. One cannot help feeling happy and peaceful by appreciating the work. It is currently in possession of Sangwon Temple in Mount Odae.

Yang said "I mainly work on Buddhist bowls, plates and ritual goods and I feel really worth whenever monks are appreciating my works. To show my gratitude, I'm trying to make them more thinner and put the patterns inside of the bowls as well as outside and I will also improve the weak point of the materials such as twisting. In this way, I can succeed and develop traditional Korean lacquer and its products."

"Government's support for craftsmen are much needed"
Spreading Korean lacquerware to the world

It has been 30 years since Yang first devoted his life in lacquer but the road was rough and cliffy. Lacquer requires 7 to 9 times of painting layer on layer and should be dried in moist which Yang has to work inside a hot room without even opening a window as the dust easily gets in and stick to the painting. That is why only a few people are showing their interest in the job.

Yang said "it is a really hard job and acquiring of the technique also is very difficult. It normally takes years of learning and practice to produce a good work and many people give up in the middle of the way", adding that "in this respect, the central or local governments' support is much needed if we are to pass down this valuable tradition to the next generation. And the support must be provided regardless whether they are intangible cultural assets or not."

Yang also showed his strong will to maintain and develop various lacquerware materials and techniques. Yang said "each lacquerware has its own characters and it will be more meaningful if people use it according to its characters. For this, I'm providing a right information whenever people bring it for repair and am also running an experience program as part of the project carried out by Sannae-myeon Slow Community.

Meanwhile, Yang served as Chairman of Sannae-myeon Young Men's Group, of Crime Prevention Guides, of Jiri Mountain RC and is serving as Head of Volunteer Fire Department. Many people are interested in succeeding traditional Korean lacquer and they will walk the road without a moment's hesitation as long as an affordable environment is being provided. In this respect, Yang is highly expected to play an encouraging role for the people in spreading the crafts to the world over Korea.
