Building an creative theory through fusion research
Science is more recognized than ever as a new growth engine of the nation. The development of science leads to the growth of various industries and to raise national competitiveness. In this respect, the government's 'Research Center Support Project' has been carried out to support and foster talented people. One of the chosen centers is 'Yonsei University Application Analysis & Computation Center'. The center carries out researches on modeling of natural & social phenomena, application analysis & scientific computation and experimental maths in pursuit of development in maths and its applications. Choi says "most natural and social phenomena are modelled as a nonlinear differential equation and this is the reason that the national level understanding of it is much needed. For this, we invited twelve professors from various universities, eight full-time researchers and forty graduate students to work together."

The center brought up three core tasks which are experimental mathematics, mathematical modeling & theory, and numerical analysis & computation. In regard to mathematical modeling & theory, they are working on basic theory of analytics, fluid mechanics, biology, numerical physics and financial mathematics. Main subjects include Navier-Stokes equation, warm current, prewavelet, levy processes, statistics and probability estimation theory. In regard to numerical analysis & computation, they are working on numerical solutions on fluid mechanics, elastic mechanics and electromagnetism equation. In accordance with the researches mentioned above, the center also shows strong interest in computation and imaging of data processing fluid mechanics & parallelism, multi-grid method and multi-physical phenomena. In the field of experimental mathematics, they are working on homogenization of heterogeneous liquid, visualization of blood flow & properties, and living organism habitat model based on fluid, elasticity and electromagnetism through numerical analysis and simulation. 

Converging field technology and maths theory to maximize synergy
Choi has been ardently carrying out a research on navier-stokes equation, which is one of the world's seven mathematical challenges, and warm current for the last fifteen years. He expected that the center will contribute to the advancement of domestic mathematics and related science. He also is confident that the center will be the foundation for domestic high tech to hold a dominant position in the fields of micro technology, life technology, scientific computation and financial engineering. Choi says "our R&D in maths will be a momentum to encourage and elevate the level of domestic mathematicians. And alongside our research, we will do our best to foster talented people who will lead the field." 

For this, the center is inviting excellent researchers and strengthening exchanges with universities, research institutes, organizations and industries home and abroad. The center is receiving financial support for the next seven years and their goal is to put their results into various fields to maximize the synergy. This is very important as Korea lacks in applying the technology into practice. 

Choi says "Brown University's ICERM (founded in 2011 with securing NSF support in 2010), for example, shows that experimental mathematics and computation mathematics are getting more important." He emphasized that the center will provide related information in applied mathematics and numerical computation, solutions for institutes and industries, and promotion of globally talented people. Power Korea hopes that Yonsei University Application Analysis & Computation Center will lead the advancement and globalization of domestic mathematics and analytics.
